Santi, i agree hes in love with a girl that is drunk with the pressure fame brings. She is looking to change herself to fit a "perfect" image. He is sickened that she would do this. He thinks she is beautiful as she is and is in love with the real girl. He knows he wont love the fake, plastic girl that was altered, and he is a bit insecure about her feelings for him. If her physical appearance changes, what she really wants will change and shell be more interested in someone with similar alterations.... Agree? disagree? |

a few corrections, at least from what i tend to hear.. a lot of the song is easier to hear from "Matt's Love and Loss" from his acoustic set a few years back "every time i used to hangup with her" "Afraid to shatter that one way mirror" "we talked all night about tattoos and the way we used to be" "just to lay my poor head down" "she had nostalgia, and chokes in her eyes" Definitely one of my favorites from his solo stuff. |

Basking briefly in this overeating indulgence of insides - a person using drugs to give them a good mental and body high but it only lasts for a brief amount of time But I fear he’s lower than before Though he's stronger than he looks - hes in a low point in his life but the narrator convinces himself that the person is strong enough to pull out of it on his own. He’s made of feathers mixed with oil and small servings Of hands and feet - i always got the image of Icarus when i heard these lines and since tar is close enough to oil it kind of works. he gets so high and then the tar and feathers fall apart and he falls to his death. or in this case to rock bottom. Up so high "How do they flutter so damn high?" - the person is envious of people who seem happy, wondering how they stay that happy without drugs Now begin the search that hails you home -he is trying to start over with his life. he is trying to look for a place where he is loved, friends, family, etc. "I think I lost my means." He said with his face in the cup Desperate times make for desperate people - he has burned all his bridges with freinds and family due to his drug addiction. now he is on the street begging for money (or maybe he turned to alcohol) depending on the interpretation of the cup. either one is a pretty desperate act. just my thoughts |

| anyone else hear repli-cunt in his pronunciation of replicant? it would be funny little add-in if he did, it would make sense in this too because the song seems a bit spiteful | |

i love this song, and i agree with humble on the meaning, but one of the things that makes portugal so great is that their lyrics can be interpreted so many ways... so to each his own |

This has turned into one of my favorite songs. im not sure how to interpret it... maybe it has to do with education, it might seem like a stretch but the first part seems like he is saying that "you can make us look the same, you can strip us of our individuality, and censor books that you seem unfit, but we will still learn our own way." the next part, to me, relates to how people as a whole are fearful, manipulatable, and quick to attack/defend, but individually you can strive for your own personal truth and perspective, even if that means walking till your legs are broken. i dont know, just some thoughts. you can extrapolate my interpretation of the rest of the song with this mind set of treating people as a group rather than individually. or on another note, it could just be about the problems of society, or drugs, or anything. lets see some other ideas! |

i always interpreted it as him losing someone he loved, or, now reading what everyone else has been writing, something along the line of hope and will to live. and the emotional fight that partook. in the end its him getting over it all with the help of his friends and family. however, the last lines "sail on quick. fly past the world. find me a love" kind of shows that he may never be confident and secure enough to fully succeed by himself and will always live with his doubt and depression unless a new and hopeful love comes. another thought that comes to me with the last couple lines is that those are just ways of getting over what was lost. the sail on quick and fly past the world, to me, sounds like he is trying to keep busy and not pay attention to anything that reminds him. and doing it immediately. while find me a love like a said before would renew his hope and confidence in himself. Thus, it makes me think of this song pertaining to more of a lost love then anything else. hope this made sense to people, i'm kind of just rambling, but with this context you can kind of decipher the song pretty easily in my opinion. |

In my opinion, the lyrics seem to represent a relationship going stale. "all this time is ash and sand, its running thru my hands" that time has no meaning to it anymore. more to the point, the time he spends with her holds no basis it, theres no form or structure. "so what if i dont feel/see it" talking about how he doesn't feel what he used to, and how he doesn't see a reason to stay with her. "torn apart from limb to limb and put in place again" i get the picture that they were in a fight where he was just getting torn apart. while sitting there taking it in a numb surreal world of his own. which brings it back to the "so what if i dont feel it" line "innocence is gone" the beginning of a relationship is amazing and blissful and well.. innocent. now its gone stale and you know every little flaw about a person and there is nothing holding you back from pointing those flaws out. maybe the cause of the above fight. "and you dont taste the same" the girl changed, lost her innocence. overall not the girl he fell in love with. and finally "the steps between us is starting to show the space between us is starting to grow" this is kind of self explanitory. Their differences are starting to come to the surface and they are beginning to see that they are growing apart. then back to the first couple of lines to recap. |
