I think this is a song about a guy who was broken up with, and now, after a while apart, is thinking about getting back together with the girl. The "gold sounds" could represent the good memories they had together, or just old memories they had. It seems like they tried being apart but it just didn't work... I think both of them are just "empty" and looking for companionship. The guy, especially has been hurt and hung up on her for a while, can't get over her, has been "sitting here too long." He realizes it's probably a bad idea-- I think that they don't want to tell anyone they know that they're back together. Also, even if they DO get back together he doesn't plan on staying with her long.

Though the cold war interpretation is interesting, I've always looked at this song in a simpler and more personal light. When one part of your life ends, we often feel abandoned and alone, desperate even--"what can you do?" But ultimately you have to move on one step at a time. |
