"I think this song is talking about problems within Christianity, and sums up how it is misused. "Who do you carry that torch for, my young man? Do you believe in anything? Do you carry it around just to burn things down?" This makes me think of people who go around spreading religious propaganda without knowing what they are talking about and ultimately "burn down" what they should be fighting for such as peace and acceptance. "What did you learn tonight? You're shouting so loud, you barely joyous, broken thing You're a voice that never sings, is what I say" They are so busy shouting that they don't even learn the message that they should be shouting about. "You are freezing over hell You are bringing on the end, you do so well You can only blame yourself, it's what I say" They are hurting the cause they are fighting for. "While you're beating with a book everyone that book tells you to love" This is the most powerful line to me. They are beating everyone with the bible while the bible says that they should love everyone. "Cause the God I believe in never worked on a campaign trail" The God he believes in didn't go around campaigning for himself or hating the opposition, but let his followers come to him. Beautiful song. My favorite on the album. He still loves her no matter how bad she hurt him. He just wants to forget what happened and have her love again. By the way, he actually recorded the entire album over the course of three days while staying in an old log cabin. |
