Le Loup – Breathing Rapture Lyrics 18 years ago
I know there are two more words after "like flaming fingers tracing lines..." but I can't figure it out.

Beautiful song. The banjo is perfect and the lyrics wonderful.

Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Lyrics 18 years ago
Personally, I think this song has nothing to do with religion. Sufjan himself has never, to my knowledge, associated this song with his spirituality (and I think he's a little exasperated by the amount of attention placed on both his religion and his 50 states project, if his interview in the Willamette Weekly is anything to go by). However, you can still interpret the song to have Biblical symbolism for yourself and your own understanding of it--but keep in mind, there's a difference between the artist's own projection of meaning in a work and the inference by the audience and their own manner of "making sense of it all." I have a completely "secular" interpretation of this song, but I could still be completely misunderstanding Sufjan (and that's okay, as long as I don't assert that what I think=what Sufjan thinks).

That said, I personally think the song is about the universal capability of all humankind for the worst kind of actions. When Sufjan says:

And in my best behavior
I am really just like him

I feel like he is referring to the possibility of murder or evil deeds that lurks at all times within every human's psychosis, whether the person publically behaves well or not. Because, as Gacy and many others have proven, just because you act charitable and kind most times, it does not mean you are devoid of rage or reprehensible yearnings.
