If you focus on the “Son of Sam” reference...the meaning of this song becomes abundantly clear... The term “Son of Sam” carries many connotations: the devil, Charles Manson, Ted Bundy…however, most famously is serial killer David Berkowitz. In April 1977, he introduced himself in a letter dropped at a crime scene: "I am the Son of Sam" Is this song about that man? Probably not…it’s probably about someone the writer knows personally (or knows of…) with a dark secret of his own. “Wham bam thank you ma’am” is common slang for sex. If “Son of Sam” has dark connotations, than adding it to wham bam makes me think rape. I think this song is about someone who raped someone else (beneath the bleachers….at school?), and the lines about the mother and “And you're quite capable of causing harm. Your malice is volcanic. Your insecurity, titanic. Your mood is always manic and I do suppose. When you hear this song you'll have a tantrum.” make me think the subject of the song is a villain and not Max’s friend. When he tells him to “pick up the pieces”, I think he is asking the subject to fix up his life, which in turn will help or save other people. I think this song is about at the person who raped “Friend of Mine”. |
