this song is hard to make out...buut...i think it the first verse says "that she is harmless and nice but with malicious intent..." ??? i honestly dont know. fave line is the way he says "my god does no one love you?" at their live show, my ex and i made eye contact from across the room just as andy sang this line...i guess we were both thinking that about each other. |

| so...first time i heard this song was when a guy played it for me as we slow danced in my living room. fell...in...love...with the song, not the guy. i distinctly remember the moment i knew this song and i would be long-time lovers was when i first heard the way scott says "...paints against the sky." that was THE moment. and even though my dancing partner turned out to be an ass hat, he did introduce me to this beautiful song that held the title of "most played" in my itunes for the longest time. | |

so...i can't shuffle past this song on my ipod. i have to listen to it. i don't usually have the attention span to break down songs line by line. so here are my usual random generalities: "...warm summer eyes that flickered like fireflies" and "...her firefly stare" = she had her mother's eyes. her mom died in the winter, daughter moved on, had her mom's eyes...nutshell. "and these nights i get high just from breathing"...i'm not sure what it means but i want to experience it. |

a "straw dog" is a scapegoat people use to deflect their bad judgements and decisions off of themselves. perhaps "jessica's" straw dog being "out in the street" symbolizes that all her excuses and cover-ups are about to be demolished. Or you know...whatever. |

this song reminds me of a sucky period in my life...especially the second verse...more specifically the line "how could you have been a fool?" for i was a fool. anyway...just a few things that spark in my mind when i read the lyrics: "i know you're cold" = the person he's referring to is dead... "come home" = the person is (hopefully) in heaven but he wants them to come back...so they won't be "cold" anymore "it's a shame how short we all have come" = maybe a reference to the verse romans 3:23...for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. "it's something all of us go through" = we all either experience losing a loved one (in his case) OR we all have moments of depression and suicidal thoughts (in the other person's case) i could go on but the song is actually pretty self-explanatory. i think it's meant to evoke hope in the face of depression even though it does carry a suicidal tone. |
