great melody, great lyrics, perfect love song. i like how the every chorus is "i miss you, i miss you, i miss you." and then it ends with "i need you like a poet needs to be alone" it reminds me of when of montreal sings "how can I explain? i need you here and not here too!" same sorta paradox earlier in the song when he says "darling you can't keep me here all day" ...then a little later " i'd leave you now but it would make me grim and being lonely is really not my style" plus the line "ill wear a beanie and the gloves well share" is an awesome picture of people holding hands inside a glove =] |

ok a couple things id like to comment on. i dont have any new interpretations of the song, i agree with basically every thing different have said here, and slightly disagree with others. first it seems that there is some disagreement on whether this song is about religion, or personal reflection. this seems like a silly argument to me because they are the same thing!! religion IS personal reflection. people try to label religion, and god, and define everything as nuiversal for everyone. while there are definitely universal laws to the universe, god is something personal in yourSELF. everyone perceives god a little differently, and no one can define god perfectly. so god is different for everyone. he is unchanging and constant but also very different because we all have different perceptions. so this song is about "religion" if you want to call it that, AND personal reflection and realization. there is no way to find god with out reflecting on yourself. look for god in yourself and you will find him. also i dont think it is accurate to say that jesse is losing his faith, but rather its just maturing. the main thing that causes me to believe he isnt LOSING his faith is their other song Jesus Christ where he talks to jesus and tries to strike a deal "do you think we could work out a sign so ill know its you?" however i do think that jesse is losing faith in HIMSELF. when he says "i used to pray like god was listening" i dont tihnk he means he doesnt believe there is a god anymore, but just that god wont listen to HIM because of the things that he has done. like caused little ones to stray, causing him to become his own millstone. one note on that line- before i read the "im my own stone" version, i heard it as a lot of people do as "a milestone" and thought that he could mean as he achieves things in life like, say, signing to a bigger record label, and putting out a bad ass album, he believes he is going down a path that will bring sin, and cause people to sin. so his "milestone" becomes the "millstone" around his neck. as someone else said, cool play on words. i like both versions of "im my own stone" and "a milestone" both work amazingly. about the end of the song- i tihnk hes talking about his own accident. he ran out into music cuz he loved it and before anyone could stop him he got killed by it. it changed him so people tihnk they know its him, but arent sure. one more thing about his faith.. i tihnk when he says be my own breathe, theres nothing i wouldnt give. he is again talking to jesus, asking jesus to speak through him, and saying hed give anything, and everything. as jesus refers to in the bible. he knows that due to his sins he has to give up his life to be saved. and thats not just christianity. christianity is only one version of the same story of self sacrifice. the mayans believed that sacrificing yourself to the gods was the highest honor, ensuring the greatest after life. islam also is all about self sacrifice, judaism, so many others. religion is all the same! just different interpretations!!! which is why its stupid to try and define, and label it. as i said earlier. religion is PERSONAL. create your OWN religion based off of all the things you believe in other religions, and your OWN ideas. seek god, or whatever you want to call it, and he will show up. it doesnt matter what name you give him!!! we are ALL wrong, no one can get it right. we just try. he fixes it in the end. |

i forgot to say that down set go is one of the black marks on their only chasing safety. personally i love it, but its not genuine underoath, plus i think aaron would struggle trying to sing it every night so thats another reason. not that aaron cant sing, the guy is amazing, my hero, awesome voice. its just really straining having to sing that high every night. also i forgot to comment on "im on my way to the top of the world but ive got a feeling ill give it away" i think they knew that they were gonna have a lot more success with the "new sound" that the label and them were going after, but that ultimately fame and glory wasnt what they really want, and their gonna give it away at some point. i think they are doing one more album after define the great line, i swore spencer said something about it in chicago this fall but i could be wrong, but i think underoath is done after that. also aaron said in AP that he doesnt see underoath going on much longer. it would be too hard to play hardcore music that long. i think hes getting more into the almost and other genres of music/other ways of using his talents to glorify god. |

allright i dont think its about what anyone has said so far (but maybe i missed something...) on timmys video blog thing when hes talking about the new album define the great line he says that the band is happy with all of the songs on the album, unlike the previous album which had "black marks" on it, which i think are the songs that the record label made them change up and sound really different. like "im content with losing" used to be called "your so intricate" (its on their myspace or purevolume still i think) and had a completely different chorus and lyrics. anyway i think this song is about how underoath "sold out" with their only chasing safety. personally i think the meaning of the album title is that the band is only trying to make a living by comforming to a sound that will sell more albums... ok so ill analyse the lyrics : "I had the whole world in my hands but I gave it away" this is the band having their music exactly how they wanted it/wrote it, and then "giving it away" to the label and letting it be morphed into something that is more marketable. "I'm a half-wit boy Cracking a smile and wearing it all on m ysleeve So cool, so poised It's true I'm just around to see Where this thing goes, I'll never know But all I know is packing bags is a remedy" this is them saying allright well sell out but do it with a smile and see what being famous rock stars is all about. we just wanna see what happens. and packing our bags for the tour might make us feel better about our decision? (im really not so sure about the verses... thats the best i can do with it) "This time I'll be nervous 'Cause I can't see your hands in front of me tonight Let's forget all pretense of what they thought we should be What liars we can be" i think they start refrencing god at this point, when they say i cant see your hands in front of me tonight. they are nervous cuz they dont know if its the right decision, or whats gonna happen. but they say lets forget what our fans and critics think about us... but acknowledge that theyve become liars and that their music is not as genuine as it was on their previous 3 albums. (the liar theme is very common among bands that have sold out... like the used "im a fake" and "liar" theres a lot of them) the rest of the lyrics are iffy... "She's a maverick, she's so smooth If things go according to plan I'll have her finished by five a.m. There's no changing plans There's no second chance I've already got both feet through the door And I can taste the air" when i first heard it i thought it was about manipulating sex.. but that didnt agree with underoath.. then i thought it might be about him saying goodbye to a loved one, knowing that he was gonna be starting a new chapter of his life and be gone for a long time. that the decision was made, theres no turning back, its really gonna happen and the old chapted is done by 5am if everything goes right. i think the end might be about god too... i agree that it could be him saying i want it my way, and god saying if you go down your path, then your not with me in my plans. or it could be god saying whatever i say goes, cuz your not in heaven with me, you dont know the ultimate plan, so just trust me and whatever i put in front of you, even if you cant see my hands at work in front of you. anyway i think the main theme is starting something new that god has planned for them and being nervous but saying that they just need to let go and let gods will be done. |

| Underoath – I Don't Feel Very Receptive Today Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| spencer is talking about being depressed and giving in to his drug addiction. hes trying to ignore his life, and god because he feels like he is too far gone "everything is out of reach". he doesnt feel like he can come back to god because he has strayed so far, so hes running away from god and into drugs. finally he hits rock bottom (and runs out of drugs) "theres nothing left unused in here, theres nothing left to say. my vision is gone and my mouth is full of sores" (i dont think that part is an analogy. my friend was at a show with spencer screaming in his face and when it came to that part spencer grabbed his lip and pulled it out as he screamed "my mouth is full of sores") he wants to "see outside" but doesnt think that he can, and has thoughts of suicide. "i feel like cutting it open tonight and falling on the floor" if thats not talking about resorting to cutting your wrists to escape the hell youve put yourself in.. i dunno what is. finally even though he still wants his drugs, he knows that drugs will never provide the lasting satisfaction that god does, and resolves to open up the door. i think the "door" and "room" that hes in is both literal and an analogy for shutting himself of from god. when he opens up the door he comes back to god, and god is there waiting. | |
