One of my favorite songs on the album, and I am quite interested in what others think it's about, because I am decided. I just wanted to point out the line "as we made our way from Providence to Phoenix" is beautiful and perfect. These are both physical locations in the US, Providence, Rhode Island and Phoenix Az. but it works on another level because Providence is also divine guidance and a Phoenix is a mythical creature which restructured itself after being burned to ashes. So the line could be interpreted literally as a move from one location to another, or it could be about the decline of a couple from grace to (presumably) ruin and then to redemption.
It works either way which is why I have a total boner for Ezra's lyrics on the album. True story. |

I am probably reading too much into this (but isn't that the fun with John's songs?) but the line "Dawn goes down today" is from Robert Frost's poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay". The last line of the poem is "So Dawn Goes Down Today/ Nothing Gold Can Stay". It could be a coincidence, but both the poem and a great deal of John's songs seem to deal with lost childhood. Just a thought! |

| The Mountain Goats – The Last Day of Jimi Hendrix's Life Lyrics

I love this song. I think he uses Jimi Hendrix, as opposed to a random name, is to show that despite the specularity of their life's accomplishments, they lived and died just like everyone else. It describes the mundane and bland things of life, but in the context of a rock idol and legend. Quite haunting when you hear it. |
