Sublime – Johnny Too Bad Lyrics 17 years ago
that "dope fiend dead bastard" has sold 17 million albums and counting, and at least isn't some self-conscious little faggot who needs to talk shit about famous people online to make himself feel better. and, in case you didn't know, steve earle was a drug addict as well homie, and in case you also didn't know, this song was never intended to be released, is recorded live in the studio with them fucking around and shit, brad starts simply talking to his band mates in the middle of the recording. this wasn't something they were going to put out into the world normally, it was put on their box set of rarities and outtakes. because it is a rarity, and it IS an outtake. have you even heard this recording?

Sublime – New Song Lyrics 17 years ago
i do think this song is about how he uses drugs to help him write music... but i don't know if it's heroin... i mean, he wrote this song BEFORE he had ever done heroin... that's true man, this song was on the "Jah Won't Pay the Bills" demo, which was released in '91, and his bandmates say that brad didn't start shooting heroin until after 40 oz. was out in '92 or '93. no lie, that's the real truth. so, if he wrote this song in '90/'91, and he didn't even do heroin until a year or so later, it's safe to say that this song wasn't about heroin. it may have been about meth, or maybe about him thinking about doing heroin, i don't know, but everything i've seen says that brad didn't touch the horse until at least 1992, and that was after this song was written.

but, another masterpiece of a bass line from eric, and pretty dope lyrics from brad. nice guitar solo too.

Sublime – Santeria Lyrics 17 years ago
osuturfman got it right on the button... brad himself said this song was a metaphor, written in dedication to his son.

i love how a lot of the hate on this page is all "what a stupid song, about shooting somebody that sleeps with his girlfriend, how immature!"

haha, it just shows you how brilliant he really was, his metaphor is so well disguised that most people are completely oblivious to it. it can stand, quite well, as a song about a cheating girlfriend and him trying to get over her. but brad REALLY did write this as a promise to his son to stop doing heroin... read osuturfman's comment on page six for a full run down.

some of the most brilliant lyrics i have ever seen. seriously, these lyrics are john lennon-good, bob dylan-good even. absolutely genius metaphor... really, i can't fucking stress how amazing the lyrics to this song are. when i really thought about the sentiment of this song, it kinda brought a tear to my eye, and i'm a fucking dude!

it's too bad he couldn't live up to his promise.

that's why i will never touch heroin, or meth for that matter.

Sublime – Had A Dat Lyrics 17 years ago
okay, actually i think the line in the first verse is: "i had a close brush with VOYEUR destiny." i could be wrong, but that's what it sounds like to me, and it makes sense in a way because he's talking about "living life like a show", about being an artist who puts all his emotions and feelings and thoughts out there for people to see and criticize, and he's saying that he wants it that way, better being an artist whose "stories, tales, lies, and exaggerations" will be remembered by people than by being a "voyeur" and watching/listening to other musicians all his life. you have to understand that he didn't always know that he was going to be a professional musician, he was in college for three years studying business and financing. that may have been depressing to him, or maybe he's just voicing his concerns that he won't make it anywhere through his music, and therefore will have to be watching from the sidelines while other bands make it big and are living the dream he had for himself.

i definitely think this song has a psychedelic feel to it,too, the imagery and introspection are very "acidy" for lack of a better term. i think this song was written either about a trip he had, one in which he focused on the essence of being a musician and songwriter, or he wrote this actually while tripping on acid or shrooms. of course i don't know this for sure, but, c'mon, this is sublime, would anyone be surprised to learn that brad wrote some of his lyrics while trippin' on drugs? hell, i'd be shocked to find out that ANY song of brad's was written completely sober. but, while other songs have more of a maryjane/alcohol/meth (and unfortunately heroin) vibe to them, this one definitely feels deeper than that, that's why i'm guessing this was a shroom/lsd influenced song.

regardless, this song has a dope fucking bass line. when bud kicks in on the drums after that first part... fucking bliss to listen to blazed. i wouldn't say this is one of their best songs, but definitely one of their best songs to get stoned to.

Sublime – Ebin Lyrics 17 years ago
but then again... I could see how it would be interpreted as an acid-trip song, how perhaps your own perceptions of others and their behaviors change once you've done acid. so your whole take on that person's beliefs and behaviors are rearranged. yeah, i could see how that could be interpreted, interesting idea vizionz.

i myself have never dropped the lucy but I've shroomed a few times, so I know how that shit can change how one looks at the world ENTIRELY.

Sublime – Ebin Lyrics 17 years ago
This song was written by Brad but based off a song he heard a friend in college play when he was at UC Santa Cruz. As far as its meaning goes I think it's just about generalized change in people due to time/experiences, and how those changes in others can have a profound impact on those who are used to those individuals as they once were.

But the real reason I love this song? That guitar solo!!! It's probably the single hardest Sublime song to play on the guitar. It's harder than Santeria, harder than Falling Idols, harder than Date Rape. He uses a lot of tricky techniques on that solo, including perfectly-controlled pinch harmonics which own me more often than not when I'm trying to play it!

Sublime – Badfish Lyrics 17 years ago
this song is about drug addiction in general, not just heroin... in fact this song was written early enough to be released on the "jah won't pay the bills" demo tape, which was in '91, and he didn't even begin shooting heroin until '92/'93, so actually it is probably not about heroin at all. but it is definitely a metaphor about taking drugs.

and the bass line in this song is soooo fuckin killer. chill ass song, prolly my favorite sublime song.

The Beatles – Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds Lyrics 18 years ago
THIS SONG IS ABSOLUTELY ABOUT LSD!!!

Watch the fucking music video!! If you can say you really aren't convinced... you are probably borderline mentally retarded. hehehe, they're all walking around in some cartoon fantasy land blowing rainbows out of their asses and having rivers of motley-colored flowers erupting out of their heads. "Tangerine trees and marmalade skies" ? Gheesus... that is a drug trip, my friends. This is WITHOUT A DOUBT a drug-influenced song. Take LSD for yourselves, or mushrooms or mescalline, and you will admit your mistake. I have done so, and I can tell you the imagery both in the song and in the video perfectly describes the criss-crossing sensations and emotions of a psychedelic mind trip. "Kaleidescope eyes" - check out a trippers pupils, and ask them to describe the visual pattern manifestations when looking at a light source/textured surface/wood grain. It can look as though things are waving, or breathing, or forming insane mathematically-founded patterns, very much like those seen when looking through a kaleidescope. I'm not making this

They denied it probably for two reasons:

(1) As a joke, because it's so damn obvious that it IS about dropping acid and they knew some people would be dumb and gullible enough to believe anything they say without looking at the content of the lyrics and making up their own minds. And:

(2) They got a lot of heat in the media when paul and john admitted they had taken acid, and they didn't want to cause any more of a shit storm than was necessary, and admitting that they dedicated an entire ballad to singing the drug's praises would have indeed caused such a media shit storm. Hell, they're literally shouting "LSD!!! LSD!!! LSD!!!" for the entire duration of the song.

If you truly believe that this song is about a picture john's son drew... hahaha my god.... you are either very stupid, very ignorant, very gullible, very much in denial, or some combination of the four. Sorry, i don't mean to offend anyone, but it is ABSOLUTELY about taking acid. Disregard for moment that the name of the song itself is an acronym for LSD and just look at the damn lyrics.

IT IS ABOUT DROPPING ACID. 100% certain. Absolutely no doubt in my mind. Don't kid yourselves, the Beatles loved their practical jokes, especially John.

Sublime – 54-46 That's My Number/Ball and Chain Lyrics 18 years ago
the "5446" part is a cover of the toots and maytals, as others have said, and, like others have also said, its about getting busted for possession.

"ball and chain" is an original sublime part and contains some of the best lyrics brad ever wrote.

it's virtually unknown outside of the dedicated fan base, but this is a seriously dope song. awesome lyrics, soulful vocals (like always), nice skankin' work on the guitar and the ball and chain part has such a cool bass line, and they change up the tempo - thus crescendo-ing and decrescendo-ing the energy of the song - expertly.

i wish kroq and radio stations nationwide would take a break from playing all of sublime's hits on the radio and instead start playing gems like this. i think that a lot of people ignorantly believe that sublime is simply immature party music, because all they hear is smoke two joints or date rape or caress me down or what i got or santeria. truth be told sublime had a deep and versatile library of music, as you all probably know, and offered humorous and often touching insight into certain aspects of life. ball and chain is a perfect example.

Sublime – Trenchtown Rock Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't think bradley is saying anything except "music is great"... more or less. Bradley Nowell was a depressed individual and music was the only natural thing that made him feel happy, aside from his family and dog.

Of course, heroin also made him happy. While I don't THINK Brad was saying anything about heroin, and he definitely wasn't using "music" as a metaphor for heroin (one of his M.O.'s was to compare the happiness music gave him to the artificial happiness of drugs), one possible hidden meaning:

Music requires absolutely no pain to lift you up. it's always willing to lend a hand, all you have to do is listen and feel it in your soul.

For heroin to bring you pleasure, you have to stab a needle into your arm and endure a terrible comedown. you can feel shitty for DAYS afterwards.

therefore... music is a better drug... cuz it imparts no pain.

ehh... prolly not, but it might've been passing through his head.

Sublime – Romeo Lyrics 18 years ago
yeah, this song is one of the coolest songs I've ever heard. the sound quality's kinda whack, but hell it kinda makes the song all the more mind-blowing - this guy should have been making millions, on the cover of rolling stone, interviews on vh1... not that that's what he was all about, but he definitely deserved it more than half these fucking horrible run-of-the-mill bands that i hear on the radio these days. gheeeze. bradley is simply brilliant on this track... great lyrics, some of his best guitar work, and the vocals at the end make it impossible not to bob your head. fuckin' eh... no disrespect to kurt but bradley was the brightest musical talent of the nineties IMO, and it's not even close.

Sublime – Pawn Shop Lyrics 18 years ago
yup there is nothing glorious about Brad's death... he was an absolute junkie, and as others have said, this song's about how he pawned all the band's gear before shows... several times. this song is very poetic and soul-bearing, actually... and it might be the dopest song ever to smoke to. that guitar riff just fuckin takes you away when your lit.

Sublime – STP Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is absolutely about tweaking on crystal meth... in his secret tweaker pad... where they actually recorded their entire second album and shot the video for this song.

"i-c-e" = in case u a little out of the drug lingo ice is an extremely common slang term for crystal meth. And in case you aren't familiar with the effects of the drug, it goes something like this: you become delusional and incredibly paranoid, begin to think people are out to kill you - "and I just can't leave the pad, cuz I'd surely wind up dead, cuz I know they're out there waitin', and watchin' for me" , and furthermore it gets your blood pressure sky high and makes you incredibly hyper - when, mixed with delusional feelings of paranoia, may make one feel like, say, burning down their liquor store for no apparent reason.

The rest of the song he kinda talks about how he has to calm himself down, remind himself he's surrounded by friends and no one's really trying to kill him... to pass the time, and because he's tweaked out of his mind so he can pay attention to just about anything, he wrenches on his car, plays crossword puzzles, and is learning how to cook meth himself.

then the fear hits him again, this time for more legit reasons. I have heard that the "pad" they were using was illegally registered under their name or something... and even if that's not true, they had a bunch of sketchy-ass junkie motherfuckers coming in and out, and people fucking tripping out and probably causing a huge scene and a lot of noise, and people jacking his shit left and right, and them boys would always play their music loud as hell... and so basically he was shitting bricks thinking the cops were about to bust open the door any second and take him to the booty house, and if you listened to date rape, you know Brad's feelings about the potential for going there.
