(and I might be wrong) but I think the song is saying that love (a verb, a "doing word") requires action. Either action in initiating that love with the person you want or activly maintaining a relationship. But your action, much like love, has to be fearless. And if you're speaking your love it has to be "fearless on your breath." The release of that "gentle impulsion" will "shake" you and "make you feel lighter", having finally done it. And that darkness you're stumbling into? It's the darkness of uncertainty. The same uncertain darkness we all blindly stumble into once we've told someone that we love them. Be it the 1st time or the 47th time. On a seperate not, Jose Gonzales and Newton Faulkner do amazing covers of this song. Amazing. Like I said, I might be wrong though. |

| Ok...here's what I have. To "Give Up The Ghost" means to die. So, the host (the person who gathers people together) is the Husband/Dead Guy. It's his funeral who has gathered them together so he is "The Host" who has "Given Up The Ghost" (died). The Tax Collector won't forgive someone's debt just because they died (The death of debtors, He won't forgive) so he rides out w/ his men and takes the silver off of their eyes (the one's used to pay the Ferryman, as Wilks pointed out)which is why he's stuck here. Now, the Lazarus reference, in John, Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead after being down for 4 days. Also, "dripping with the waters of Sheol", Sheol used to be the name of the place that sould went to before there was a Heaven (thank you, 5 years of Catholic School and 2 years of being an alter boy), so Lazarus is back and dripping w/ soul juice....I think that the Lazarus referance indicates that maybe the Lord himself had a hand in all of this business. The people who stink of smoke and 10 cent gin are the people at the funeral. The woman who is "staring madly at the roast" is the murderer. Now, the rib of Adam created the eyes of Eve by being the source of her creation. So, since Adam created Eve w/ his rib, she n turn creates Cain & Abel. And one murders the other, however gets women and his own place (?) but isn't heald responsible. So neither, in this case, is the murderer. Am I making sense here? Lemme know. | |

| My g/f and I have about 10 songs that are "our songs" and this is definitely one of them. The only bummer is we've seen them over a dozen times between Cleveland, Columbus, Chicago and Baltimore and they've never played it live. Oh well, still a great song. | |

This has to be the most hilarious, pretentious, self-important waste of typing I've ever seen!! Aren't all of you afraid of falling from such a tremendous height? I swear, if I never see such a grandious false sense of entitlement again it'll be to soon. IT'S A SONG!! George Micheal wrote "Father Figure" and everyone thought it was sexy until he came out as gay...now,a bit creepy? Maybe, but A SONG NONE THE LESS! The ONLY people I've ever seen use the music and art of others to vidicate there existance are goth kids. These are the only group of (usually teenaged) people who live lyrics like a text book guide to life. I love Clutch for a variety of reasons. One of them is their ability to use humor and wit, simultaneously (sp?) The other is that nothing is sacred to them. Tool rips people who smoke a lot of pot a new asshole, and I love Tool, and I love pot, too. Do I think that Maynard James Keenan is a prick? No, HE"S A FUCKING ARTIST! It's incredibly simple, and has been simple to me ever since I saw the Congressional Hearings for the PMRC when I was a small kid. If you don't like it, TURN IT OFF, change the channel, return the CD. Do whatever you have to do to not make the lives of the people expressing in the art and the people relating to the art's lives miserable. Should animals be treated better? Yes. Are people going to stop eating meat? No. (becasuse bacon's fucking delicous and my eggs would be awefully lonely without it!) In the end, making anyone feel stupid, ignorant, ill informed or uneducated because they don't agree with your opinion is a waste of intellect, time, and typing. So, in the end....it's just a fucking song people. And in my humble opinion. A few of you could use a joint and some good head. All the while the tradgity to all of this is what's being ignored...Neil Fallon is an incredible lyricist. Probably one of the top 5 in music today. And enough of one to cause all of you to get your proverbial "panties in a bunch" (just a metaphor, please, feminists, leave me be) |

I think it's about someone who has sexualy molested someone because of a compulsive and repeated sexual addiction. I think that "I hide the dirty minutes under the dirty mattress and it's making me itch" could mean porn material, the per minute billing of a phone sex line or a metaphore for hiding the times that these things have occured "under a mattress". I think that the church organ and lyrics of, "I am what I do, I am what I'm done, I'm sorry", show that he feels guilt for what he's done because he does have a conscience (sp?), but he's also aware of his extreme lack of impulse control and he's asking God for forgivness. Or just for forgivness in general and the organs and choir are just there to symbolize the "divine" nature of his search for mercy. But in the beginning, yes, he's a heathenistic sexual mess. |

I think it has a varierty of meanings as far as the line "get out right now" is concerned. Patton says "I don't speak that language anymore", "My blood is not that color anymore" And he did live in Italy for a spell so I think in that sense he's refering to America and just a need to get himself into an environment free of the crippling effect that American entertainment system can have on creativity and making you think "what if there's no more fun to have"? I think it's also Patton's first public proclomation to his intentions of dissolving FNM and going on to what he's accomplished w/ Ipecac Records, his various other projects and the artists he's signed. He knew already that there was something inside of him that was going to make these things happen and why. |

This is just me (and I smoke alot of weed, so...) But I think that the song is about a guy who is left by his love. "Dream with the feathers of angels stuffed beneath your head" means that he still loves her and he wants her to be happy, especially if it means leaving him, but for what she's done "The Regulator" (time) will swing it's pendulam from one side of life, to where she's happy and content (and obviously already replaced him) to the other side where eventually her sadness and regret will inevidebly (sp?) set in. He knows that she'll pay for what she's done to him and it won't be through him, it'll be though God or Karma (you pick) and that he now has to walk "the longest mile" which is the mile you walk alone, something she'll soon be doing. And I completely agree w/ Warlock451 on the incredible procuction value of Clutch's albums. I love that raw, Pro-Tools free feel of a whole band sounding like they're all in the same room. Right on! |
