If I ever get married I want this song on my wedding... |

I read too the meaning that it is about that couple in the bar. And Guy said it moved him so much that he made them marry in the song.
Not sure about the breaking glass in the end. Maybe she breaks the bottle which made her so addicted... |

And inspired by cocain. "keep your powder dry"
Guy said in a interview, when he worked at a bar someone asked him to try some coke against the tiredness. He tried and wrote 25 pages of "absolute bullshit". But this song is most about the dangers of too much party |

I love how Guy keeps the long notes there...saw him back in 2004 and I thought he was drunk because he swayed so strangely back and forth but after that long note I knew he was fine... |

I always have that bittersweetfunny thought on the first line: old grandpa sits in the bath and calls to his wife: "Darlin' coutcha bring me my rubberduckie" and then he dies fast and painless... ;-)
Guy said, this song is musically inspired by "Entangled" by Genesis, but when Genesis are sweeping away in Mellotroneclouds Elbow put in the next gear and get WILD....that feedback-ending is pure adrenaline for me... |

Mom thinks, Guy behind that desk with a bottle of wine looks like field-curate Katz from the story of the Soldier Svejk *rofl*
Guy said, the song is about an old landlord who died and no one of his family really knew him...
and technically it came, when Craig Potter played "Picky Bugger" in half speed by accident... |

btw...this is a great song to test the bass level of your speakers...the way my speakers start to hum during the brass-solo...whoa....*grin*
But it is a nice song. Quite untypical in his lightness, after the nasty noisy Bitten by the tailfly and before the sweet-starting-noisy-ending Newborn... |

@incoherentlove, I heard the mumbling too. I always thought it belongs to Little Beast because the beep bip bip bip noises are the same speed like the song...
anyway. Red is really heartrending, it must be really hard to see a friend slowly break but Guy said he heard later, that the girl made it to get away from the drugs...
btw...I think it does not sound like Doves, Doves sound like that...the most Red-ish track by Doves is "Someday soon" which wasn't written then yet. But maybe they inspired each other...Guy said he listened to "Sea Song" while they were recording their first record. Maybe they decided then to change the accoustic version from the Noisebox to a more electric version...(good idea in my opinion) and Doves and Elbow are good friends... |

and as far as I remember some interviews with Guy I think the girl was a barmaid and the guy was Guy and a bunch full of drunk folks...
But when I think how Guy sings this I wonder why he could not convince the barmaid...he sounds so heartrending lovable there... |

@Louisa, this time it is a not that rare B-Side.
I really like that song, it is kinda sleepy and minimalistic and shows quite funny, what Guy thinks about TV... |

@Louisa, it's a very rare one, it only appears on the legendary Noisebox-EP and the Any Day Now-EP with the brown sleeve...
I'd really like to know the deeper meaning of that song, it sounds very sad...the person in that song must be really depressed... |

I don't think it is about Edith. Guy said in an interview, that he wrote that song about a woman he had NO relationship with and he dived so deep into it that he sudden felt like he has a relationship.
I like the ending somehow...bitter and funny in the same moment...but what means "my speach is just a gas leak" ?? |
