This is by far Bizkits best song. People can't appreciate the effort Limp Bizkit made with this EP. They didn't want to conform to musics/metals standards; already mentioned granted but they didn't wanna go down the same old route..Make Album that appeals to majority, Big advertising campaign, interviews, videos and all that bollocks. Fred was trying to right alot of wrongs he made with the band back in it's so called heyday & get back to hardcore music like Three Dollar Bill. It was a great sign of how he had matured and how he wanted to change his & the bands image, the millions that hated him seemed more pissed off at this because they could see that he was making a effort and they didn't like it so instead of praising the criticized for the change in directioon, despite slagging that old direction off constantly. This was destined to fail no matter what, but the people who bought and enjoyed this appreciate the effort and maturity it entailed & if Limp bring something out back like the Choccy Starfish days I'd be extremely pissed off! |

Just too add, "Maynard was recognizing the false saviors from the Massiah" That alone is just not Tool or Maynard, sure I don't know this guy but from what I have heard from him, he isn't the type of guy to give anyone the tag of 'MESSIAH' either by own belief or byt this process of elimination you mentioned. If the song says anything, it's that their is no MESSIAH or higher being, especially not Jesus Christ, the individual Maynard has frequently denounce with his work with both Tool and APC right from Opiate it has been clear Maynard doesn't see Jesus as any kind of 'Messiah' |

The way you (above) interpret this song is by your own accord and means. I think the way you project it is incorrect. You shouldn't dismiss other views and it would be wise for you to pay more mind to them. I think songs mean different things to each individual and should be respected. I think your theory about Maynard metaphorically using the cross as a metaphor is accurate but I also think it has some literal meaning. The problem with your rant is that it isn't in any way factual. No-one knows how Jesus was or how he projected his views! History as a tendency to exaggerate. My whole view on religion is that it is merely writing, doctrines that people feed into, to find some righteous way of living, they recognize with these beings who believe they have some sort of Divinity and higher ground, people use religion as a tool(no pun intended) to make their way through life. These people are what this song often refers too. I believe it is more targeted at L. Ron Hubbard mainly because Maynard as quite the disdain for him, also it is noted MJK is no advocate of Jesus C either!. But the reason I mentioned Jesus is because in my opinion he is one of the earliest and widely renown Martyrs; a guy who believed he was the one, the person who was sent here to show us Humans the way and if we believe him and follow his lead we too will find divinity! He also claimed that he was dying for us, it was necessary that he did this in order for us to progress as a race, this affected so, so many individuals and that is why it is so popular, some guy told us he was willing to die for us and by this 'courageous' act he developed such a loyal following that has continued right till this day. That is why I mentioned Jesus, because he was one of the first to do this, rant about things and tell people how they can be the best they can be. Nowadays there are many pseudo-religions e.g. Scientology, created by a pretentious fool who told people by following in his ways they will find some sort of spiritual enlightenment. Like I said in a interview I read with Maynard he stated that he believes people shouldn't feed into anyone dogma or belief, only that we should be open-minded about them all. We all see what extreme loyalty to a certain creed can do, people become so devout that any kind of act which by they are going against their beliefs can cause so many problems. Martyrdown |

I think it is a stab at martyrs & martyrdom in general and how people tend to need someone to look up to and listen to in order for them to find their way through life. I also believe L. Ron Hubbard and Jesus have a role to play in this song, especially with the part at the end about sins and lies in reference to the Bible and why Jesus allowed the execution of himself. No-one actually knows whether Jesus lived but one thing is for certain many people since have claimed to be Divine and have the message of life and how to live it, plenty of pseudo-religions are around today and plenty I imagine have existed before, Scientology is among the most famous and one Maynard looks upon with more than a tad of disdain. I recently read a interview with Adam & Maynard and the guys from Isis and the message I got is that Maynard just believes people should make their own paths, live their own lives and not conform to any sort of religious views, or at least with the unswerving dedication often do. While reading it I reflected on this song (eulogy) and what Maynard is getting at; Just live by your own means and if you can find assistance or help in something then good but don't feed yourself into one particular thing, or in the case of this song; Religion. |
