Jon Foreman – My Love Goes Free Lyrics 18 years ago
For me it speaks of a relationship that, for whatever reason, is holding the girl back from her full potential. The boy isn't really doing anything wrong, but he recognizes that what the girl really needs right now is freedom to sing her own song. (metaphorically speaking :)

Ben Folds – Not The Same Lyrics 18 years ago
I read an article in Relevant magazine where they interviewed Ben. In it he said the song wasn't a comment on religion or anything, but events in peoples lives that change them. He said the water slide lines were about an newspaper story he read about big name preacher who built a big pool and water slide. A kid fell off it and died and Ben felt like that would have been a pretty significant, life altering event for the preacher.

I agree with pretty much everything Viva has said. I don't think there's anything in the song that points to his reference of angels and demons as a comment on religion. They're simply common images used to express good and evil, just like saints and villains. To insinuate that he's saying religion is bunk is a pretty big stretch in my opinion.

I take those lines to be saying something more along the lines that good and evil can many times be almost indistinguishable. Somebody can do something that turns out terribly, but if they were only doing the best they knew how, does that make them evil? And somebody can do something insanely selfish, but even that can turn out for somebody else's good. Does that make the selfish actions good? Where's the line? That's what those verses mean to me at least.
