Depeche Mode – Here Is The House Lyrics 14 years ago
Could you people stop cluttering up Songmeanings with your inane banter about how much you love this song? We get it, you like the band, go on Last.fm and sing their praises there. This site is meant for actual discussion on what your interpretation of the song is.

Anyway this seems like a straightforward love song which is belied by the somewhat dark synth lines. However it is possible to take this song literally, since with DM songs like "Somebody" or "World or Nothing" usually have subtle lyrical hints which tell the listener not to take the song at face value, or that the lyrics are in fact subversive. There aren't any hints in the lyrics here that the song is about anything other than desiring a quite night and closeness with your lover. It's a love song, albeit a somewhat gloomy sounding one. See ponyboy06's interpretation also.

Nine Inch Nails – Twist Lyrics 14 years ago
The best PHM demo track. When Trent recites the lyrics at the very end of the song, he sounds absolutely submissive and defeated. What is this song about? Sadomasochism, S&M, power play in relationships, hopeless dependency, depression, masturbation (which is what Trent–I think–says while playing the song live here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCQClUbvQMw).

Anyway take your pick.

Nine Inch Nails – La Mer Lyrics 15 years ago
La Mer was written while Trent rented a house by the ocean to create music. While at the house he seriously contemplated suicide, and this is the only song which emerged from his stay at that house.

La Mer is about suicide.

Please don't ruin any more Joy Division songs, thanks.

Nine Inch Nails – Down in It Lyrics 16 years ago
The song was inspired by the breaking up of a relationship Trent had sometime ago with a girl named Kissy. However, THAT DOES NOT MEAN "DOWN IN IT" IS ABOUT A SOUR RELATIONSHIP BECAUSE IT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT! Ultimately the song is about suicide and this is something Reznor admits to himself--the video confirms the meaning. Structurally the song is a rip off on Skinny Puppy's Dig It, and this is something Reznor freely admits to. The cover art for the single is also strikingly similar to Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures album art.

Stabbing Westward – Ungod Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is basically about self-mutilation, and about the relief you feel after opening up your flesh with a knife. Chris said so himself in an interview I read a while ago.

Nine Inch Nails – Closer Lyrics 16 years ago
Its about trying to quell a feeling of worthlessness through sex, trying to fill an inner void with hedonistic pleasure.

Basically this is what Trent has said, and he has also expressed chagrin at the fact the song became a huge hit at strip clubs--which was not his intention. He also mentioned jokingly that his next album would just be called "Music for Titty Bars."

"I didn't think it would become a frat-party anthem or a titty-dancer anthem," Trent Reznor snorts, and it's hard to tell whether his principal emotion is pride or embarrassment or despair. Oh well. "I think my next album is going to be called Music for Titty Bars."

Killing Joke – Wardance Lyrics 17 years ago
True, Killing Joke influenced MANY industrial metal bands, but pure industrial was not really affected by KJ. Pure industrial music, I'm talking about Throbbing Gristle, Einsturzende Neubauten, early Clock DVA, early Cabaret Voltaire, early Current 93, Coil, SPK, Whitehouse, early Test Dept--that's real industrial. KJ influenced industrial metal bands and elektro-industrial like NIN, Ministry, KMFDM, etc, but don't confuse the two.

U2 – A Day Without Me Lyrics 17 years ago
THE SONG IS ABOUT IAN CURTIS. It was written after Ian Curtis committed suicide. PERIOD. NO MORE WORTHLESS INTERPRETATIONS THAT IS WHAT THE SONG IS ABOUT.

Nine Inch Nails – Eraser Lyrics 17 years ago
Its time to step in again and put a stop to moronic interpretations. Patches' hit it on the head. If you want the actual meaning of this song, you must take it in context with the rest of 'The Downward Spiral,' which is an album that is NOT ABOUT BREAKING UP IN A RELATIONSHIP YOU DOLTS. Trent himself never once said Eraser is about a relationship either so just stop being stupid and start using your thinking caps.

Nine Inch Nails – The Fragile Lyrics 18 years ago
Ugh. Its time to put a nail in this one: The Fragile is a song about Trent's grandmother, not about some lost love interest. CASE CLOSED.

Nine Inch Nails – Sanctified Lyrics 18 years ago
Just to reiterate so we can avoid any confusion here, the song is about addiction to cocaine, and the girl in the song is a metaphor for a crack pipe. THERE SHOULD BE NO MORE INTERPRETATIONS FOR THIS SONG, THIS IS WHAT IT IS ABOUT, TRENT SAID SO HIMSELF.

Paper cuts?

Rudy should stick to German so his English speaking audiences can't understand his juvenile lyrics.

Type O Negative – Paranoid Lyrics 18 years ago
No, this is the best cover (or interpretation, your pick)of the song. Period. If metal heads can't appreciate this version of 'Paranoid' then they probably do not know good music if it came up and slapped them in the ears. Slow, melodic, very ToN. An incredible, and heart wrenching, epic song.

An interpretation of the song? I think the lyrics speak for themselves.

Nine Inch Nails – Down in It Lyrics 18 years ago
Here's what the song is actually about: SUICIDE. Trent said so, and the video confirms it. (Trent jumps off a building to escape his pursuers.)

It's about Countess Elizabeth Bathory who murdered several hundred young women and bathed in their blood.

Skinny Puppy – Dig It Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm not certain about the song's meaning, it's enigmatic and obscure like many of Puppy's songs. What I am sure of is that Autoerratica is correct: Trent Reznor cited 'Dig It' as his influence for writing "Down In It" on PHM.
