Elliott Smith – Somebody That I Used to Know Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about somebody who makes excuses for their assholeish behavior and chooses to continue it, even though they know it's hurting the people who care about them.

"It's your heart not mine that's scarred" to me means that the subject is messed up mentally, but they put people through so much shit, that eventually people can't deal with it anymore even if they do feel bad for that person.

People can get caught up in a destructive cycle of being an asshole. When they're assholes, they get upset because they lose the ones they love, then they are even worse. Eventually they can just turn into a different, mean person. Some people you're just better off not being involved with, even if you do feel sorry for them.

Cursive – Donkeys Lyrics 15 years ago
It is:
"Whoa, oh, oh no
*IF you're going to Pleasure Island, you can never come home
Whoa, oh, oh no
The problem with you, kid, you can't say no
You can't take a little nibble, you got to lick the *BONE"

The Mountain Goats – Magpie Lyrics 16 years ago
Maybe he and his family would try to get everything perfect and orderly before his step dad came home, to try to avoid angering him. Maybe it never really worked.

Blood Red Shoes – This is Not for You Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about people who are dating and having serious problems with their relationship. But they get so deep into the problems, that they just want to forget about it and ignore and try to go back to the way things were before. They get into a pretty huge, nonconstructive argument and blame each other for the problems they're facing as a couple. It seems to happen a lot (stumble back into this mess).

I especially like how at the end you can hear both vocalists singing "are you listening?" at the same time, and it helps one's male and one's female. Because obviously, they're not listening to each other when they're trying to talk over one another.

And as for the "I don't want you to think I do these things I do because of you" part: it makes me think of arguments I've had with my boyfriend. I don't want him to think that the things I do for myself I'm doing to impress him some way. It's hard to explain.

The Wallflowers – One Headlight Lyrics 16 years ago
Part of the main chorus is about how it would be hard to overcome the depression, but they could do it together (me & cinderella...) He thinks it would be worth the struggle because he thinks they would have been so happy together afterwards.

The Wallflowers – One Headlight Lyrics 16 years ago
I know that this song is about the struggles of the band to get noticed in the music industry, but I think that is a very boring meaning. So I made up my own meaning and story behind the song so that I will enjoy it more and I think it is much more moving.

It's about a girl he loved who was abused throughout her whole childhood, and nobody knew about it, so nobody did anything to remove her from the situation (the long broken arm of human law). It really messed her up and she suffered from depression even into adulthood. She commits suicide. The guy is feeling nostalgic, and decides to visit her childhood home (smells of cheap wine & cigarettes..) There, he thinks about the conversations they had about how the abuse affected her (it's cold...) He starts thinking about how happy they could have been together and how he could have helped her through it if he just had more time, but her life was too short to allow enough time for her to really heal.

"come on try a little, nothing lasts forever" is directed at her after she died. Sometimes people feel angry at people who died for dying. He's really torn up and resents the fact that she left him, when he feels everything would have just worked out if she just didn't give up like she did.

Placebo – Because I Want You Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is kind of like that old saying "misery enjoys company", but I choose to hear "because I want you to" rather than "because I want you too", like most people think it is.

Like the person in the song is a depressed alcoholic and gave up on life, they subconsciously want someone else to be miserable with them, so they completely sabotage their relationship by taking their unhappiness out on the other person. They think about what they're doing and feel really guilty about making someone they love extremely frustrated and unhappy, and realize that they (the depressed, alcoholic) did it intentionally, even if they weren't aware of it at the time.

To sum things up, I think this song is about guilt for wanting other people to suffer along with you.

Ludo – The Horror Of Our Love Lyrics 17 years ago
I can see the Salvador Dali inspiration in this. He and his wife seemed to be crazy about each other, but not in a good way. Here's some quotes from the wikipedia page on him, although that article really doesn't talk about their relationship very much at all, it still sounds like it was pretty unhealthy.

"Gala was dosing him with a dangerous cocktail of non-prescribed medicine that damaged his nervous system, thus causing an untimely end to his artistic ability."

"After Gala's death, Dalí lost much of his will to live. He deliberately dehydrated himself—possibly as a suicide attempt, possibly in an attempt to put himself into a state of suspended animation, as he had read that some microorganisms could do. He moved from Figueres to the castle in Púbol which he had bought for Gala and was the site of her death. In 1984, a fire broke out in his bedroom under unclear circumstances—possibly a suicide attempt by Dalí, possibly simple negligence by his staff."

It doesn't mention the quote ("I love Gala so much, if she dies I will eat her"), but I have seen it other places before.

I think the meaning of this song is "get on the internet and make yourself look like a total asshole on songmeanings.net by posting a bunch of offensive shit and be sure to hit the "add" button at least four times."

The Black Eyed Peas – Where Is The Love? (Feat. Justin Timberlake) Lyrics 18 years ago
baby_scarface got it mostly right, but the lyrics are "it just ain't the same. Old ways have changed." But other than that, they're right.

I really like this song, but I think it's very hypocritical coming from the black eyed peas. They talk about how the media has us following the wrong direction, and how we're so obsessed with money. They have songs like "my humps" that drops a designer brand name in it every three seconds. Especially Fergie with songs like "glamorous".

System of a Down – Science (feat. Arto Tunçboyacıyan) Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is actually about the meaning of life, and how our universe came to be, and how nobody knows. Science can't explain it all.

This song isn't necessarily about God, imho. I think it's just about that as people we need something to believe in, because if we don't believe in anything, then what's the point of life really? It's not like you need to believe in God to find meaning. Everyone needs to have faith in something, or else they would just feel hopeless.

Why would anyone bother to wonder about the meaning of this song when she didn't even write it? It's manufactured crap.

Sorry, I just saw this on the latest comments and was bewildered that anyone would actually feel the urge to discuss what this song is about.

Cat Power – Hate Lyrics 18 years ago
This is my favorite song by Cat Power. Uhhh.. It's pretty self explanatory.

Just thought I'd like to point out for the few people who don't realize it, "I hate myself and want to die" is a song by Nirvana.

The most interesting lyrics, in my opinion, are "there's no laws or rules to unchain your life" which I think means, there's no one thing that will make everyone's life better, worth living.

and "the other half is innocent, the other half is wise..." I think that means that when someobody wants to kill themselves, it's because they are usually an innocent or naive person. Somebody who expected more than what they got out of their life. At the same time, they are being being wise by now understanding what the world is really like and that not everything works out for the best or "greater good".

"The heart wants to explode, far away, where nobody knows..." Wow.

Anyone else know the 12 steps to recovery by AA? Not trying to accuse Hayley of being an alcoholic, but this song definitely reminds me of them. (Doubt that is what this is about, but I just thought it was worth pointing out)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12_steps#The_Twelve_Steps

I think this song isn't necessarily about God, but just asking for help in general.
