| Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song strongly,STRONGLY, reminds me of a short story by Stephen King called 'The woman in the room'. Its about a man whose mother is dying of cancer, and so he makes the hard decision to give her a pill and kill her, rather than watch her suffer any longer. OMG, just the way the lyrics are even written in this song is so stephen king-esque. its almost eerie. Such a sad and meaningful song though, its so powerful. | |

this song really, actually reminds me of New Moon. When Edward leaves Jacob is all Bella has left and he kinda pressured her to be more than friends ["you're pushing and pulling me down"]. Bella loves Jacob but, not in that sense and though he makes her happy, he's no Edward ["Of you, I knew, I know in my heart It's not you, I knew, but now I know what I want I want, I want, oh no I should have never thought"] thats what I got outta it. |

| oh geeze...love this song, by far their best. my favorite easily. its so sad though, I'm not sure what it means to everyone else but it reminds me of my ex. we broke up tons, and then we'd run into eachother and fall back in love and try over again. even though we knew we were bad for eachother we never failed to try again. it was a foolish type of love, we both ended up really hurt. | |

alright, its been said that many/all of the songs off this album were dedicated to Bert's late ex Kate, I think this is definately meant for her. I believe its about the thing Bert hid from her. Drugs and sex, obviously. "when I mention blue all you thought was color, when you mention drugs all I thought was sober..." blue, is slang for crystal meth--he most likely speaking of how he hid his addiction from her and then the part about "you mention drugs all I thought was sober"--probably referring to the lies he told her to keep her happy and unsuspecious. "your pants came off and I turned you over"--yes I know everyone is commenting on this one, but I seriously think that this is meaning he had an affair and was cheating on Kate, possibly with a man--very unlikely but possibly. "Keep the mask aligned Get it up in time There's a space between valleys and try and catch a vibe Make a circle square, a rectangle curve Use a smile as a noun and I think like a verb Run quick switch sides Spill the filled up canister And the room is shaking Now you're changing places, and I switched my pace, and my breathing races when you mention blue " I think theres two different ways to interpret that part. At first I want to go with the obvious, it seems to describe the sensation of being on drugs. At second glance I see much more to it--it could be the sensation of having to lie to someone you love, I see that particularly in the last line "my breathing races when you mention blue". Also when he says "make a circle square a rectangle curved" to me it makes sense, he is lying to her and changing his story anyway he can to hide the truth. "keep the mask aligned" mask is a metaphor, he is hiding his drug life and affairs, he puts on a "mask" for Kate. "get up in time" possibly getting up or putting together his story before she confronts him. "kill, smile, cut it out for me this time, smile, I haven't seen him smile in a while." this seems to be speaking more from her point of view. She is pleading with him to stop his lying and stop the drug use, she is begging him. "haven't seen him smile in a while"--obvious, she is noticing how unhappy he is and how the drugs have changed his behavior. I firmly believe that based on what has been said about this album being dedicated to Kate, this song is purely about the secrets Bert kept from her and all the skeletons in his closet that he must expose. :P |

this is one of the most meaningful songs I've ever heard, it invades my soul. seriously. its beautiful, its simple and to the point and above all, its genious. My real take on the song? 1) you all need to get over the whole Bert/Gerard feud, they are both adults and I'm confident in saying they've moved past it, now its just something for fans to buzz on. God, its just become such a lame topic. 2)if you are retarded enough to think this is just about mexican food, go somewhere. You have to understand the deeper meaning and read between the lines. TRUE MEANING: Bert is obviously dealing with some inner demons, memories of his shameful past and such. Its really getting to him, he can no longer stand who he use to be, even though he knows he is not that same person. To me this song seems to express alot of suicidal thoughts and tendencys. I think perhaps Bert may be turning to self mutilation because he can no longer deal with the emotional pain. Also from the song I got the feeling that the entire band is probably incredibly strained because of the fame and constent spotlight put on them. Its a lot of pressure, I think that is what this song really portrays--pressure. Rather its the pressure of who use to be (in Bert's case) or the pressure of fame. Its truly touching and speaks to me in every way. :P j/k j/k!!! |

sounds to me like this is about a kid living in a really screwed up household. "and the pills go down and get you higher baby bottles burning" perhaps the kid has a drug addict/alcohalic mother? "father touched you with the hand of god he's gripping tighter" okay that line in particular screams MOLESTATION, I don't rather they mean father as in the child's actual parent or better yet father as in a priest (what? a priest molesting children, why thats just unheard of! lol!), I think considering the religious aspects of the song its more likely to be the priest. "you will burn in hell they say,you will burn in hell!" I believe that this is meaning the child has told an adult about being molested and the adult doesn't believe the child (they just think that he is perverted and sinful for spreading such "lies" about a priest). Thats what I got out of it! |

okay, I think considering Bert's past (with drugs) this song is probably about getting clean. when he says "fallen in love" I think he could be referring to the drugs and how he became addicted. "today I fell and felt better, just knowing this matters" I think by that he means, well...the drugs had created a numb world for him and now he is getting clean and regaining feeling. Its like he's saying he fell, and the pain was actually refreshing compared to not feeling anything when you're on drugs. "I just feel stronger and sharper!" that one is obvious, he is proud of himself and what he's accomplished by getting off drugs. Now, I think someone already made this point--and I just absolutely agree, when he says "found a box of sharp objects. what a beautiful thing!" He is talking about the un-used needles (drugs, duh). That is my best interpretation of the song, hope I'm right or at least close, lol. :P |
