The Appleseed Cast – Kilgore Trout Lyrics 17 years ago
I hate to hate on Handsunderwater but Kurt Vonnegut was considered by many to be the greatest American writer alive after the death of Joseph Heller. So there is no problem with having Kurt Vonnegut as your favorite author. Kilgore Trout in everybook Vonengut talks about usually is talked about in a very obscure way. He has written over 100 novels and countless short-stories. His stories usually show up in Pornography Magazines or his books are only available in Sleezy backwater shops. This song is about someone wanting to be remembered for being great and is begging someone to help him be remembered. Even after doing so much and writing so many books no one knows who he is. I think Kilgore Trout is a direct reference to Kurt Vonnegut. Kurt Vonnegut has written many great books but many people do not know any of them besides Slaughter House Five and possibly Breakfast of Champions.
Kilgore Trout appears in

Cursive – Some Red Handed Sleight of Hand Lyrics 17 years ago
Im gonna break this down Im just gonna combine lots of other peoples idea's with some of my own
I personally think this song could have so many meanings which makes a good songwriter, when multiple people can relate differently to the same words but lets begin.

Opening lines
"And now we proudly present
Songs perverse and songs of lament
A couple hymns of confession
And songs that recognize our sick obsessions"
Obviously this is just the opening of the cd. Cursive is presenting "us the listeners" a cd full of confessions heart ache, regret and some of the things they are not proud of.

"Sing along, I'm on the ugly organ, again
Sing along, I'm on the ugly organ, so let's begin"

While I totally agree with theHeart thing from genii80 I think the term ugly organ can be taken literally in these lines right when he says sing along the organ comes in. Kasher wants us the listeners to interact with his music. If youve ever been to a cursive show they love audience interaction.

"It's no use to keep a secret
Everything I hide ends up in lyrics
So read on, accuse me when you're done
If it sounds like I did you wrong"

This has been explained very well earlier, Kasher has no reason to hold anything back, because it will just come out eventually. All his cds have deeper meanings. HEs saying listen to the whole cd find out a meaning then accuse him if you feel he messed up something or has done you wrong.

"Our father, who art in heaven
Save me from this wreck I'm about to drown in
Didn't I learn anything
Counting out my sins on rosary beads"

Hes praying for help obviously some of the topics covered in this cd are painful to him. Hes asking for help before he drowns in sorrow. Then he knows he has made these same mistakes multiple times when he has already counted them (probably many times) on rosary beads which are used by catholics for repentance. The fact that he hasnt learned anything yet means he has counted these same sins before.

"The reverend plays on the ugly organ
He spews out his sweet and salty sermon
On the audience"

This goes along with the heart theory he is talking about how reverends or all religious people "play" on peoples hearts. They inspire you or strike fear into you. All of which are emotions of the heart. he spews out a sweet (inspiring) or salty (Guilty hell, fire and brimstone) sermon on the audience.

This is were the song just gets ridicolously sick
"So why do I think I'm any different?
I've been making money off my indifference"

Kasher relizes and confesses that he uses the same emotions to sell his records. Does anyone just feel numb when listening to cursive? This also goes with the opening lines. A minute and a half into the record and this is already his 2nd confession.

"We all pass the hat around
This is my body, this is the blood I found
On my hands after I wrote this album
Play it off as stigmata for crossover fans
Some red-handed sleight of hand "

Kasher states we all feel the same way, but this is his turn, these are his feelings, his anger, his hate, his regrets, this is the blood he has on his hands. These are the sins he has brought back up during the creation of this cd. Stigmata is taking on the signs and pains of christ. He is playing it off like some how writing this record has saved him, this is his public confession. He has confessed to being guilty (red hand) in a sleight of hand (lies and tricks)

Altogether just an amazing song its a bummer they usually close with this song instead of opening with it
