This song.. wow this song. <3 "If I can't crawl inside of you, I'm laughing with a broken face I stumble across my self esteem. But to picture the pleasure is making me want my space." ~ You're wanting to be happy, but that never happens. And the thing is, to even think about it makes you uncomfortable and your low self esteem forces you to be alone. Understand....... That God wrapped you like a bow. But in my head... There's some shelves that need cleaning, from basement to ceiling, control. ~People tell you that you're special and God loves you the way you are, but you know that you're not, and that there are many parts of you that need help and therapy. /'you' (as in an someone the artist is singing to) are wonderful; God wrapped YOU like a bow, but in MY head.. there's so much that needs to be fixed and cleaned. "If what you're seeing is an open book, that's great 'cuz I'm an open book, a confused boy." ~ You're an open book and you're confused, so if that's what other people see when they look at you, then great. Because now you don't have to explain yourself. "I'm an automatic steeple for depressed and lonely people. My heart while in it's cage, is used to give and not receive a thing. But the only funny thing is that I don't know how to give myself advice." ~This is pretty self explanatory. You attract depressed and lonely people. Your heart is locked up and always gives but ever receives. Although you're giving all these broken people advice and love, you don't know how to give any to yourself. "I've got this post traumatic thing. I've got this tattoo of a ring that lies around my wedding finger and that's where I want to state this claim. "That I've got to learn to live and dream before I go and get myself in love" " ~Due to trauma, you want to heal and live your life before you're not alone. "I've got to learn to live and dream before I go and get myself in love" "There's Zoloft, Welbutrin, there's Paxil that's proven, no side effects. But the rest left unnamed 'cuz they'd work like a charm on me." ~This line always hits me the hardest. There's all of these drugs: Zoloft, Welbutrin, and Paxil, to name a few, that are 'proven' no side effects. (You can hear the sarcasm in his tone.) But the rest of the anti-depressants out there aren't mentioned to you because they'd work like a charm. It's cruel. "But when your savings is drying. you can't stop from crying. You've got to suck it up. You're not her buttercupp, you're not her favorite book." ~You're savings are running out from spending so much money on medication that never works, you can't stop from crying. But you've got to suck it up because aside from your mental health problems, she doesn't love you. These are the musing of someone with mental illness, particularly including depression. It's so sad and so relatable. |

It sounds like he's singing to the part(s) of himself that he hates and wishes he didn't have. The 'you' isn't about a girl or anything cliched like that, but simply himself. "I'd arrest you if I had handcuffs I'd arrest you if I had the time" These lines that he keeps repeating basically sound to me like he's saying that he'd stop the 'negative' part of who he is, be it the characteristics of lying (which he mentions a lot), being cold or mean, etc. All of the attributes of himself that he wish he didn't have. This 'demonic' side of him is personified throughout the song which makes it sound like he's talking about someone else. "I’d throw you down in the backseat As if you committed a terrible crime" Probably using an allegory or metaphor of sorts to describe how he'd proceed to 'arrest' his negative side. "We break into towns worth of houses And rob whole families blind I’d do it to you like you do it to me If I knew you would get away fine" He's giving an extreme example of a crime, robbing towns of families, and mentioning how he'd act the same way his negative side does (do it to you like you do it to me). The last line denotes attachment and feeling for this dark side because it is still part of him, even though he hates it. "I’d drown all these crying babies If I knew that there mothers wouldn’t cry I’d hold them down and I’d squeeze real soft And let a piece of myself die" This is a very powerful verse. I interpret this as atonement.. saying how, if the mothers wouldn't cry (he'd be still considered 'good') he'd drown the babies to remove the dark side of him.. as if by doing something as horrid as drowning babies would almost cancel out the demon in him or something. Or that it would be so evil it would cross over the other side and disappear. "It’s hard to be the better man When you forget you’re trying It’s hard to be the better man" This is pretty self explanatory.. It's hard to be a better man when the negative side of him is being ignorant to the attempt of trying. "I’d arrest you if I had handcuffs I’d arrest you if I had the time I’d wait for you outside the courtroom Taunting as your appeals were declined" His feelings towards the dark side of him become more aggressive now.. "I’d drive my car off of the bridge If I knew that you weren’t inside Put the petal to the floor, who could ask for more A fantastic way to kill some time" Then he seems to express concern for it, saying how he could just get rid of himself as long as his dark side wasn't there and was safe. I love how it sounds like he's going through an emotional roller-coaster while trying to figure out and make sense of how he actually feels about who he is.. switching between hate and compassion for his internal devil. "And you could lay on your back and be beaten You could put up your fists and fight (You could try anyway)" I think what he's saying here is that his negative characteristics could surrender, 'lay on its back' and be smothered, they'd try to fight, but the good side will always prevail. "It’s hard to be the better man When you forget you’re trying It’s hard to be the better man When you’re still lying" This verse makes me think that the main demons he's addressing are related to lying. I think this part of the song can be taken literally unlike most of the rest. It's hard for him to be a good person when he has this bad side of him that keeps lying. He keeps repeating this, almost like a plea to himself to correct his behavior. It's confusing, but extremely creative. I suppose this song ties in quite nicely with the title of the album as well "The Devil and God are raging inside me". Definitely about internal struggles on the grounds of morality, in my opinion. |

To me, this song is clearly about an abusive relationship. "since i met you. this house has started to decay and every wall that once was clean. has turned a shade of grey." it's like he's saying that once he'd met this man, his life, body and mind have started to decay and every good thing in his life ( wall that once was clean) has been ruined. This could also refer to his virginity being taken away, or allude to sexual abuse. "so much to rescue. so much you just cant understand now the streets are dark and empty. and the problems in our hands." When someone is in an abusive relationship, it is like their whole life is being destroyed. So when Wolf speaks about so much to rescue, i think he's referring to his life that is currently under control by his significant other. And, quite obviously, this is something that his significant other can't understand because he doesn't see the problem in their relationship. The streets being dark and empty can be thought of as a lack of hope and the feeling that there is nowhere to run to. Again, the problems im our hands, speaks of the dysfunctional relationship. "i cant leave you. see back home my house is falling down. i cant leave you. and back home my house is falling down" The feeling of being unable to leave and the fear of what it will mean to leave the abusive relationship is what i think these lines are about. "since i met you. my basement has started to bleed the floors are all collapsing. still im begging to be free" I think the first line quite literally means that ever since he's been with his man, his 'basement' has been in pain and bleeding. "The floors are all collapsing" may be a metaphor for describing the feeling of everything in his life falling apart at the hands of this man, and, still, Wolf is begging to be free. |
