| Arcade Fire – Wake Up Lyrics

Its about when you're young you're sheltered. You're not greatly exposed to life's harshness and so you're joyous and without a care in a world. You think you're special and you're going places. Then you grow into an adult and the blinds are pulled up, suddenly you're exposed to everything. All the suffering, injustices and indecencies and it essentially kills your childhood innocence. Also you find that in life nothing comes for free. You need to work hard for everything. He's calling on children to be more aware of whats going on around you and to realize that you're no different than the person next to you and you need to work for your dreams or you will never achieve them. If you don't realize this then you will fail, your dreams will be shattered and your heart broken. At the end of the song I think he's talking about old age, looking back on his life and being angry that he didn't achieve what he wanted and now society has no use for him and he's waiting for Death to take him. |

One of my favorite Stripes songs. A little Bible reference in this one. I guess you guys know Jack almost became a Preacher before he hit it big, right? |

| Against Me! – Animal Lyrics

When you read the reviews of the album either they don't mention this one or its a negative comment. True, its not a typical song they do but hey, you've got to put that sort of thinking to the side. The song is great, I love it. The beat is so smooth and the chorus is really catchy. The message in the song is also very true, It reminds me of my time as a bartender and a bar fly. Meeting women at clubs is all about lust, not love. Its all animal instinct and this is what this song is about. An anti-love song. It almost glorifies it. Rock star go through the same thing, sex serves a purpose other than love. Like an animal. |

Oh, one more thought. He sounds a lot like Billy Corgan on this song. So much so that I could see the Pumpkins playing it. |

Its a good song no matter what it means. Never knew Edwin was gay, news to me. They should all do themselves a favor and hook up for a new album. |

Ha, ha, wow I love this song. I heard it for the first time in years the other days. A bazaar is basically an exotic flea market but I know the song is trying to send some sort of message home though symbolism. The message? I'm not so sure... |

I love this song. I love the lyrics because I can really relate to them. I'm approaching this time in my life where I'm beginning to wonder about the same things he talks about in the song and I'm dealing with the same personal issues and such; I would like to consider myself ready for a serious relationship but in the end I know I'm not willing to give enough to be in one right now. |

Ha, ha, I know I'll draw heat for it but this is a chick song. The feel and the whole concept, I could see it playing in the background at the beginning of a chick flick. |

She wanted a relationship and he wanted sex. She said no to sex and he said goodbye. She's torn because she really wants to be with him in a relationship but he's only after sex. If she calls him she knows thats all she can ever hope to have so she doesn't. Pretty simple. |

I don't care if somebody else played the same riff in another song, its friggin' rock and roll, everybody borrows a little from everybody. I'm not a big punk fan but I love this song a lot. I love the attitude of the Sex Pistols, or I should say I did when I was a kid. Ha, ha for some reason I always get riled up when I hear this one. Anybody want a punch in the face? ;) |

| Van Halen – Poundcake Lyrics
|
The song is about his love for traditional country women. Sammy isn't down with the liberal city girls who dress sleazy to get a man's attention. He wants a "plain, clean, and simple (woman), wrapped up nice n' tight"; a woman of taste, who has self respect.
The chorus: "And homegrown and down-home, that makes one
Cookin' up that old time, long lost recipe for me. Woo!"
Another example, he wants a real "down home" country girl, which is rare in this time and age and even more difficult for someone of his stature to find.
These paragraph:
It's gettin' hard to find
Guess it ain't hip enough now
You take an average guy, he can't identify, uh
And there's a short supply of her fine, fine stuff
He says it again, this type of woman, a REAL woman, is really hard to find and its not "cool" to be chasing these country girls. He thinks the typical guy doesn't understand how he feels, they're chasing the high maintenance city girls and as time goes by the old fashioned girl he's looking for, the good stuff, its becoming extremely hard to find.
This paragraph: I've been out there
Tried a little bit of everything
But it's all sex without love
I found the real thing is poundcake
He's a rock star and he's been around the block and has screwed a lot of different women but there was no love involved, just lust. He's come to realize that the thing he's been looking for is the love of a simple country girl and he uses "poundcake" as a symbol of this simple country girl.
Its all about symbolism. Poundcake is a symbol of the country and to be more specific in this case he's using it as a symbol of the country girls, not anal sex. He's a friggin' rock star, you don't think women would lining up for anal sex with him when he wrote this? Van Halen was the biggest band around back then. He had his pick of women at the shows but the the kind of woman he was looking for wasn't lining up to have sex with him in the dressing room. A real woman with self respect and traditional values. This is what I get from listening to it anyway. |
