Whenever I listen to this song, I always imagine the motorcycle crash Stephen describes as a metaphor for the end of a relationship. The car crash represents the event that ends the relationship. Even though he can see it happening, he can't do anything about it as he slides into the car. The idea of him flying through the air is his feeling as the end of the relationship affects him deeply. Yet even though is affected so profoundly by this, the event is just a passing moment in time, as represented by the line, "Mr. Death in the car below doesn't even slow and away he goes." The lines "People turn away and I just had to laugh, Cause I'm still flying" make me imagine that friends know this happened, but don't mention anything. Even though it's all done, he's still thinking about it constantly. In the end, he knows he'll be alright, even if he is initially hurt as he "got to walk away from [his] hit and run."
I'm sure this isn't what Stephen had in mind while writing this song, but it's the story that I always play in my head when I hear it. |

| The Anniversary – The D In Detroit Lyrics

I feel it's quite obvious this song is about a long distance relationship. More specifically, it's the start of a long distance relationship (or an increase in distance). The singer knows it's only a matter of time before the girl he's singing about moves and thinks the increase in distance will be the end of their relationship. The 'D' in Detroit reminds him of the inevitable move, and the thought of losing the girl scares him. |
