I absolutely agree with what others have said above me on how incredibly patronizing this song is.
Some of the lines are just so ignorant, too. "Where nothing ever grows". You've got to be kidding me. "a world of dread and fear" and "the only bells are the clanging chimes of doom". I'm sorry but Africa is not one continental hellhole.
Thoughts like those go right with people who say that "africa is a very poor country".
I can't believe so many famous people agreed to sing a song with such condescending lyrics. |

I think this song is actually about Britney Spears, just look at the line:
They shaved her head.
She was torn between Jupiter and Apollo.
They is of course the papparazzi, indirectly they made her shave her head. Jupiter and Apollo are Justin Timberlake and Kevin Federline.
Just give it some thought, Britney Spears fits in the entire song! Dylan probably had some premonition of her when he wrote this song. |
