This is totally about drugs. Trippy word choice, imagery and temporality all contribute to the fact that this is a drug song. The chorus is a good place to start: "Why does the soul hallucinate? I've got control, I shift my shape." The first referring to the genuine wonderment while tripping that tripping is possible. Then the insecurity of tripping must lead to the affirmation of control over the body through the mind, in that the mind can go so far as to change ones shape. This kind of control is only possible through tripping. "your eyes, they swell like a riot, deranged; tomorrow you're laughing like a child again": While tripping, the eyes are one place the mind materializes its trip as dilated pupils are a dead give away. Tomorrow (temporal factor), once the trip is over, we'll all be laughing about how much fun we had doing simple child like things (that tend to happen on a trip). |

| well this song seems to be a story about johanna. it seems that she steals a ring from some sort of king who may be in town for cancer treatment because sloan-kettering is the best cancer hospital in the world. some of the details of the story aren't clear to me, however it seems that she tossed the ring because she ends up moving to washington heights, which i understand is not one of the nicer neighborhoods in new york. so they are possibly suggesting her willingly giving up the ring, showing her unselfishness which suggests this story is about justice. johanna may have stolen it to correct 1000 years of injustice. anyways, i'm still unclear on other parts like the raincoats and his honor going to new mexico, so if anyone knows whats up with that, or if im completely wrong about what i came up with please post. | |

| jose gonzalez says that this song was the result of "the god delusion" by richard dawkins. abram means all the abrahamic religions which are judism, christianity and islam. these monotheistic religions are irrational, oppressive and create conflict. go to sleep means he wishes they would stop "sleepwalking" and just end. | |
