Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark Lyrics 18 years ago
I think Death Cab is a great band. very poetic and talented. but they are way off base here. don't get me wrong, this is a beautiful song...but that may be part of the problem. an obsession with earthly, human love is very dangerous because it's not what we were created to worship. we are definitely supposed to love each other unconditionally; to the very end. but that needs to come second to our love for God, who created us.

God is love, not fear. 'fear is the heart of love' is not a widespread Christian belief, although some people misconstrue 'the fear of the Lord' to mean that. To fear God, doesn't mean to be afraid of Him in the shallow and negative sense of the word that we usually attribute to it. To fear God means to have respect, adoration and true love for Him. The Bible says that The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of all knowledge. Meaning....as rational beings we cannot come to a true understanding of how anything really is unless we respond to God from the appropriate perspective: He created us, knows all, and is unending in love........if we look to Him for guidance and direction with how we do everything; live, love, and understand things about this life (and death) we we start to get it a little bit.

sorry, i know I went off on a tangent about God, and not just the song. i just think people should be careful. C.S. Lewis talks about Hell being our own self-created world. So if the blackest of rooms is what one wants to experience for all of eternity while frantically grasping on to another soul that shares their limited, human love instead of spending eternity with the One who created love itself.....than that's what they will get. Be careful what you wish for.

There is a heaven and there is a hell. and they have plenty of space. at a point, our souls were all on a path for that darkness because we rejected God's love and chose to idolize and worship ourselves and other humans instead. Jesus has shown us the ultimate example of true love and He invites to share that unconditional love with God and others for eternity. we all need to choose if we will accept God's love or if we will choose to be alone/with our 'lover' forever.

Ben could have meant other things by this song though. I'm not bashing the song so much as I'm questioning the ideology of eternity being a nothingness and we are all alone unless a boyfriend/girlfriend somehow decides and is able to stand beside us in this eternal nothingness.

the song gives a good message for this life though: real love is unconditional love and we should follow the ones we love to the darkest places and stand by their side no matter what.

I know this song is touching, but don't let it get to you too much....there are better songs, better ideas/beliefs, and there is a love better than that between a boyfriend and girlfriend who would kill themselves and or choose an eternity of darkness just because the other did..

The Receiving End Of Sirens – A Realization of the Ear Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's from his perspective; maybe talking to god for part of it or, more likely, to someone close to him; like a lover, family member or friend. I think it is the writer, Brendan in this case, confessing that he has chased after the wrong things in this life, and it has changed him and he is sorry.
