Aside from what the song "means" or narrates, I really love how it renders and exposes with eerily accurate truth all the ironies that exist for the class who live (or, more likely, spend summers) on the Cape. I have spent many a day and night on various Cape towns and am roughly of the age of the characters in this song so I was amazed by how well the song captures what I've experienced. What I mean by ironies....(imagine this for the wealthy high school- and college-aged kids down the Cape) a few examples: by day, you sweet-talk to a rich guy wearing Nantucket reds, maybe he gives you a good word in college admissions or sets you up for an intership....by night, you fuck his son. by day, you lifeguard on the same beach where you swam as a kid...by night, you get ripshit drunk at a party on that same beach. as a little kid, you learn to sail...ten years later, you smoke pot under those little boats on the rack. etc. etc, the list is endless and pretty entertaining. The chorus's juxtaposition of "is your bed made / is your sweater on" with "do you wanna fuck" is just so perfect and embodies this irony. I can totally imagine a Cape mom asking her daughter "is your bed made / is your sweater on" before she heads off for the day/night, then half an hour later the guys asks her "do you wanna fuck" like it's just a casual part of conversation (and the funny part is that she's probably known the guys who asks that since she was little, coming down the Cape). |

| agreed! hahahaha! it's mostly just a playful bunch of metaphors for sex in the back of the restaurant with the waitress...."just whip up my cream", "I ain't go no money, but i intend to pay for my meal tonight", "She treats me like i tip her from my head to her toes", etc. very clever... | |

This song to me is just about faith. Specifically, one's own defenition of faith...in this song, it can include a defenition of faith involving God, but it doesn't have to, and here it seems to be just in the context of faith through a friend. Faith and belief makes the things you are unsure of real to you and gives you support to live life with. I love "Belief makes things real Makes things feel Feel alright Belief makes things true Things like you You and I" and "Belief builds from scratch Doesn't need to relax It doesn't need space." the latter quote is good to remember in a hectic life-- like if you rely on your faith to keep you sane, you don't need to be constantly stressed out by trying to adjust yourself to everyone else. |
