Okay. I've seen a lot of really bad 'views' of this song and I'm not sure if there are any accurate ones.. So I'll post what I'm pretty sure this song is about... It's basically, on the surface, about a boy losing his virginity for the first time. It's really impressive to me that they wrote a song about it from a guy's perspective. Society weighs even heavier on males to be sexual than they do females. A breakdown: "You don't recover from a night like this" - First time having sex- you never forget it. Throughout the song there are quite a few lines describing how nervous he is... "He keeps his hands low, he doesn't wanna blow it " & "His stomach turns and he thinks of throwing up" are just a few These lines make me feel this is something his friends set up- they're helping him get in with everyone else by losing his virginity.. "Despite everything he learned from his friends, he doesn't feel so prepared" & "Upon arrival the guests had all stared Dripping wet and clearly depressed, he’d headed straight for the stairs" She's obviously someone they knew would go for him- a girl that has already trashed all respect for her body and everyone else's in general.. she's just looking for a good time and is having fun playing with him. "She fakes a smile and presses her hips into his" These "This doesn't seem quite fair" & "this is so messed up" are saying that he wanted it to mean something more... he feels like he should be feeling something for this girl so he adds "He whispers that he loves her, but she's probably only looking for..." I'm also thinking now that this was probably a girl he admired or had a bit of a crush on, and his friends helped him get her.. but she isn't really what he wants. ("so much more than he could ever give A life free of lies and a meaningful relationship") It's obvious that he's having second thoughts about this setup from the beginning ("clearly depressed / No longer cool, but a boy in a stitch, unprepared for a life filled with lies and failing relationships / She's moving way too fast and all he wanted was to hold her"), but feels it's too late to turn back now ("But the body in the bed beckons forward and he starts growing up "). So he goes with it anyways, hating every minute ("He's holding back from telling her exactly what it really feels... like / He waits for it to end and for the aching in his guts to subside ") On a more figurative level, this song is about cheapening your body with casual sex and how it destroys you inside, even though no one wants to admit it. We aren't grown up until we've done it (Up the stairs, the station where the act becomes the art of growing up) and afterwards, we're 'adults'... but we're also cheaper and more miserable as well, leading to a "life filled with lies and failing relationships " The moral is hidden in "Die young and save yourself.", saying that everyone is selling their souls to these meaningless acts, and it would be better to die before you turn into just another cheap and petty being- "you werent too hard to sell" Pretty sure I wrapped that up... =] |

What I can't figure out is why everyone thinks that a song is automatically about substance abuse. Did it ever cross anyone's mind that perhaps a musician would write about something OTHER than that? I know it's a common theme, but please. There are more important things in life and I think Interpol is above writing a song about weed. |

A little proof to Zoch and RUBEN (who should fix this) that the original lyrics ARE 'sucked the moon' http://radiohead.com/Archive/Site9/start.html |

Man I need this song... o.o (Barguest and Barghest are the same thing btw) |

| Barguest - (Yorkshire. Henderson.) A creature of something the same kind as the bogy beast. It sometimes appears in a human form, but generally as an animal. In the fishing villages, a barguest funeral is the presage of death. the barguest in whatever form has eyes like burning coals; it has generally claws, horns and a tail, and is girdled with a clanking chain. | |

| I did comment on this without listening to it by the way... Does anyone know where I can find the song itself??? | |

Patrick is so in love with life.. it's amazing and (a bit) disturbing at the same time. And actually this is a side of Patrick that he doesn't try to hide at all... just look at his lyrics to The Adder. He has a fascination with beastiality But truthfully, this song makes me feel like he is supposed to be a wolf running in the forest. It IS very animalistic and fierce |

Eleahtro, I'm not exactly sure that it does have a hidden depth... Patrick is a very odd (lovably so!) person. And I quote: "In the same way I don’t know if my sixth album is going to be a death-metal record or children’s pop, I don’t know whether I’m destined to live my life with a horse, a woman or a man. It makes life easier." It was the horse part that caught my eye... |

See I always took the blood figuratively, but the law part makes me think maybe I WAS wrong. But I like to think the song is more subtle, about how he has such a hard time getting himself to love her ((Does it mean that I can never change my ways?/why does love leave me so damn cold?)) the way she loves him ((Still you will and love me)), and how he wants to end the relationship ((Like a cancer, or a curse)) even though it's going to hurt her, and can't decide if he should stay or go because of it ((And is this what it should be?/Oh, is this forever, ever?/Or do we kill this one tonight?)) Then the last part is like their last night, and he is in love with Love but not with her ((And now come the tears, heavy and hot/As it comes clear, this is all we got)) But the beginning verses kinda kill that, unless its a two part song =/ Because I dont think the rest of the song fits into abuse that much. I dont know. That is how I look at it though, and this song is still absolutely stunning and heart wrenching. I guess my take on it is a bit personal as I am the same way (The cant return the love thing) and it touched me. Also because Patrick said it's such a meaningful song to him and I doubt he abuses his gfs/bfs, so I took it to be figurative about the abuse.. more mental than anything |
