Nine Inch Nails – Zero-Sum Lyrics 18 years ago
They're starting to open up the sky
They're starting to reach down through
And it feels like we're living in that split second
Of a car crash
And time is slowing down
And if we only had a little more time
And this time
Is all there is
Do you remember the time we
And all the times we
And should have
And were going to
I know
And i know you remember
How we could justify it all
And we knew better
In our hearts we knew better
And we told ourselves it didn't matter
And we chose to continue
And none of that matters anymore
In the hour of our twilight
And soon it will be all said and done
And we will all be back together as one
If we will continue at all

Shame on us
Doomed from the start
May god have mercy
On our dirty little hearts
Shame on us
For all we have done
And all we ever were
Just zeros and ones

And you never get away
And you never get to take the easy way
And all of this is a consequence
Brought on by our own hand
If you believe in that sort of thng
And did you ever really find
When you closed your eyes
Any place that was still
And at peace
And I guess I just wanted to tell you
As the lights start to fade
That you are the reason
That I am not afraid
And I guess I just wanted to mention
As the heavens will fall
We will be together soon
If we will be anything at all.

Shame on us
Doomed from the start
May god have mercy
On our dirty little hearts
Shame on us
For all we have done
And all we ever were
Just zeros and ones

While I don't have much to add about the title or the "Zeros and ones" line (props to the folks that puzzled that out), I'd like to direct you to www.anotherversionofthetruth.com. From there, you can find out a lot more about the album, and if you dig deep enough, you'll find a site written by the main character of the album. Dig deep enough into THAT, and you'll find a long, rambling post about his experiences in some foriegn country as a soldier. He and his platoon were holed up in some church, and they had some poor girl tied to a chair, and she just kept screaming at him in a language he didn't understand. Finally, when they untied her to take her out back and shoot her, she gave him a lock of her hair to keep. And he did.

Hence the lines:

I guess I just wanted to tell you
As the lights start to fade
You are the reason
I am not afraid

And I guess I just wanted to mention
As the heavens will fall
We will be together soon
If we will be anything at all"

Those lines alone make the entire ALBUM worth listening to. Reznor has tied all of this political, culture, industrial mess back to what is a quitessentially human experience: love, and regret.

by Crowley_1988 on 05-07-2007 @ 07:08:01 PM
The song means that human nature dooms them from the start, as we spread like a virus, destroying things to build what we want, destroying and strangling nature with pollution and anything else we make as a byproduct of our existance.

What made me think was the 'And all we are worth is just zeroes and ones' - reference to Binary? I saw a program implying that existance is pretty much what the Matrix says. Maybe a reference to that? Or possibly how existance views us as a whole, zeros and ones, not a lot, just moving along and insignificant to the whole of existance, jsut a string of metophorical binary, or how the leaders view 'the people', just as a series of computer slots on government data forms etc. Not as real people just as information in the database, seperating us from our humanity, making it easier to rule over without guilt of what they do so long as they get what they want and live their own cushy lives.

I see it as a whispery love song as he is telling his lover what he feels as the world ends. Kinda like a final goodbye, in a 6:15 sentence with piano in the background. Almost makes me cry, and i'm not the type who cries easily. I think because it reminds me of what I said to my girlfriend once, and that I would spend the last hours of our existance with nobody but her.

This, and the song that precede it, at first are very depressing. But the more I hear, the more it feels hopeful. Maybe, once everything else has been stripped away, all there is left is our love and what we meant to those we loved in turn. That's not such a bad thing.

Maybe all we are is zeros and ones, and are the attempt of a vast equation (god) to balance itself.

the people b4 me have done a good job with the song, and i think they more than nailed it. but, about the title and how some ppl were saying that eventually the world will end when the sun dies out or if a meteor hit the earth. and all our work and all that we've done wont matter, it will be gone, equaling nothing, or zero, hence the name, zero sum

by ZeroesandOnes on 05-24-2007 @ 03:40:45 AM
I personally think this song could have been a lot better, if the vocals weren't so dissorted. I know this adds a charm to the song, but I'd like to hear the lyrics.

But still a kickass song

I apoligise if any of this has been mentioned before, but ill just give a couple of my ideas about the song meaning.

*zero-sum refers to a situation in which peoples gains and losses are directly proportional. So one person gains at the expense of someone else.

*In the context of the album the song can be seen as refering to the death of humanity or it could also aside from that be seen as an individuals death and their inablity to forfill a useful purpose in life.

*these 2 points taken togeteher it seems to me as many people have pointed out that it is about peoples willingness to boost their own lifestyle at the expense of others, such as the situation we have at the moment where the west we live in relative luxury at the direct expense of other nations.

*the second verse takes on an individuals view of the end more obviously then the first verse. He lements about the lack of finding peace despite his comfortable life and hopes that after death he will be with his loved one.

*the chorus as most people say is quite obvious. It refers to the basic flaw of humanity and can be seen as refering both to the apocalipse the song seems to be hinting at and also the whole zero-sum concept of gaining at someone elses disadvantage. Quite interesting in that he asks that god forgives us when we were doomed from the start, which would mean that god created us to be doomed.

Anyway loved the song needless to say. Never been a huge fan of NIN before this album even though i have several others from trent, but this album was really fresh and exciting.

My take on the song echoes much of what has already been said but I always have this image of a guy sitting in a room playing a piano while the outside world is being ripped to shit and the world is fucked. The drum beat and distorted sound effects make me think of this. As the Presence is destroying earth and mankind, all this guy can do is sit at piano and record (as indicated by the slightly clippy vocals) a last message to his loved one, as well as humanity. As the song dies out he's still playing this piano as it is all he can do. Numb, shocked, whatever, it's his final solace.

The great thing about this song is the ambiguity of the message. Every time I listen to it I dunno if it's a hopeful message or a saddening record of Earth's last days. The final note of the piano isn't part of the motif which suggests... Well, I dunno what it suggests but it sticks out like a sore thumb if you listen for it.

My $0.02

by ChildrenOfFilth on 06-12-2007 @ 09:47:33 PM
This song is incredibly haunting. My take on it is the insignificance of human life at times. On the grand scale of things, alot of the themes on the CD seem almost insignificant compared to the biblical ending Zero Sum provides; I.E The modern age horror of 'Survivalism' and the the likes of 'Capital G'. Essentially, this song is the realisation of this, and the narrator realises there is no way to justify it. This isn't even a prayer for hope, just wishful thinking. The only thing providing the narrator with any hope is his partner/child. There is nothing left to do but hope things will be okay, and the realisation our fate lies in the hands of a higher being makes us all insignificant, just binary codes in God/The Presence's world.

Confused meaning, but none the less a fantastic song and a brilliant conclusion to the Year Zero album. I'm sorta hoping Trent doesn't continue the concept with the next album, just because this, for me, is the perfect conclusion.

by Ballad on 06-23-2007 @ 12:48:09 AM
ChildrenOfFilth, you pretty much summed up the whole meaning behind this outstandingly beautiful song.

In the very end, nothing matters anymore. It doesn't make any difference whether we are talking about the horrors of a totalitarian government or the desperate attempts to resist it and make things better... In the hour of our twilight, everything is futile. There's no one left to blame, no one left to point a finger at. At death's door, everyone is equally valueless.

I, too, hope that Year Zero pt. 2 will never be made because that would totally ruin the meaning of this song. I admire Trent for not to giving us any straight conclusion to the events of Year Zero. Instead, it's left open for us to figure out. Ultimately, we'll have our questions answered no later than fifteen years from today.

by rolandlakr on 06-25-2007 @ 08:57:36 PM
This is coming in late, but I just stumbled across this site while searching down the lyrics for a friend. I scanned some of the other meanings from others and didn't find this one. So I thought I'd toss it in the pile.

First off, I think that anyway you see a song is just how you see it. Now a way to start this off is to look at what someone else said. Someone explained how binary works, the 8 bits per letter, and how 1 bit is kind of insignificant considering the message. Well I think that carries over in an interesting way in how I see it. The first large verse seems to be of the greedy people who pushed war and wanted further power at the sacrifice of others. in that last few seconds before the end of the world they think how small they really are. They tried to gain power, they tried to be more than just 1 bit in the chain of numbers. and they realized they are JUST 1 bit. and the use of the chorus kind of seals up that part of the song.

The second large verse seems from a different view. Possibly a father to his daughter, or husband to wife ect. It is saying they tried to take the easy way, lay back, and let others fix the problems. In a way they were trying to be less than 1 bit. They are realizing in the end trying to take the easy way out doesn't work because they are still there. They are still 1 bit. And the use of the chorus sums it up for them.

So to me the song is saying being part of the problem can be not being part of the solution. Being part of the problem is DEFIANTLY being the problem. And to end it all, there are more people being the problem and not being the solution than there are people being the solution.

The connection to today is completely real. There are too many people saying "I don't want to be at war." but not letting it go further than the person next to them, there are far to many people saying "Not enough people speak up" and not speaking up themselves, not influencing others to speak up. People might say "It's just a song" but this song is a foreshadow of our destruction weather we like it or not. When it happens it isn't going to be pretty, and it IS going to be our fault.

For one, if you want to know the story behind this song, go to www.hourofarrival.net It is a sad story depicting a father calling to his newborn baby being born far away. He tells her who he is, and why they may never meet. It's really a good heart pulling story.

As far as the song goes, here is how I see it, and how I think Trent might see it, though the song is meant to inspire, not to demand.

It seems to me that it is referencing how no matter what happens, the Earth is going to turn back into stardust. Even if nothing happens for billions of years and Earth is left to its own devices, the Sun will eventually explode and everything will return to Zero-Sum. Everything wears down, everything dies, even stars.

All of our cares, worries and inhibitions will mean nothing, so we should use all the time we have, live life while we have time to live it. All the times we should have, and were going to... but didn't. Wasted life spent turning ourselves into machines, regarding our planet as ours, ready to be used up to our hearts content, never knowing that in fact, we are the Earth's creatures, and we are subject to its will, whether or not we know it.

Our arrogant predisposition to our world caused the catastrophe in Year Zero, and is causing major problems... problems which could indeed affect our ability to survive on this planet. This whole album is a warning, and this is the perfect way to bring it home emotionally, logically, and very personally.

The foolish idea that when we throw things "away" they just go away, and that we could never do any harm to the Earth, for it is so big and huge and we so small is killing us. This was fine when we were stupid and in low populations, but now we are at a tipping point. We are just uneducated enough to continue to dump unrefinable garbage into our own home, but we are technologically advanced enough to do it in mass quantities.

The thing is, we also have the technology to make it all better, but most of us just don't know enough about it to make an educated decision on the ultimate survival of the species. One major thing that would both solve world hunger and cause a huge boost to biological diversity would be going vegetarian.

I know, I know, everyone hates to be told that, and I myself still eat at McDonalds, but plants are the only source of food on this earth. They are the only things that truly make food. Everything else eats plants or the things that eat plants. The thing is, 90 percent of the energy in food is lost transfering from plants to the things that eat plants, then another 90 from those animals to the things that eat them. Then another 90 and so on and so forth. It becomes extremely inefficient. If we became herbavores, we could plant in mass quantities, not need to use up space for grazing, and let all the animals do as they do and not torture and kill them, which would stop all the protests from PETA.

Everybody wins, except for your tastebuds maybe. Seems like a good compromise compared to the Year Zero style mass death that is bound to come if we exhaust our resources.

Thank you for listening... umm... i mean reading.

Oh, and good progressions in the music too... really interesting! :D

Wow, another fantastic finish to a Nine Inch Nails album. Trent Reznor is really good at closing out albums.

Zero sum obviously has lots of meanings and interpretations behind it. In the context of Year Zero's story, it just marks the end of civilization as we know it, either from a mundane source such as nuclear war or perhaps from a higher power such as the presence. Heh, sometimes I like to think this is actually Trent Reznor in the Year Zero universe, an older man looking back on the downfall of humanity.

Looking at it outside of the story of Year Zero opens up the possibility of other meanings too. For one, it clearly has references to death.

"And soon it will be all said and done
And we will all be back together as one
If we will continue at all"

"And I guess I just wanted to mention
As the heavens will fall
We will be together soon
If we will be anything at all."

Those lines to me seem to denote being about to die, and wondering if there is an afterlife or not.

Anyway, now that I got that out of the way back to the song. The "Zeroes and ones" thing reminds me of a system of a down song where Serj states that he is "Just the meaning of Pi", or the ideal that the government sees him as a number, a statistic. Zero-Sum uses a similar analogy, though on a far grander scale. In the grand scheme of everything, planet earth and human beings themselves, for all our great civilizations and technology and discoveries, we remain a miniscule dot in the universe. The song also quite clearly points out the sentiment that this ultimate end to everything we know is all our fault.

It's still not entirely a negative song though. The person Trent is talking to could symbolize the more beautiful aspects of humanity. You know, things like reason and compassion. If humans would stick to these sentiments above absurd religious beliefs or greed or fear or hate then we might just be able to make it work.

This has easily become one of my favorite NIN songs. Trent Reznor is the only God I acknowledge, and he continues to amaze me. Hope he keeps this up, but it all remains awesome. I can easily say this song is one of the more amazing songs I've heard.

I think this song is about "The Pressence" coming through and Doing what it does. I belive its the presscence because this song has some of the same songs as "God Given". Also its noted that when the presscence is around people have a feeling of insignificants and altered realty. I think this song is also about about how in "the end" humanity is going to realise we havent really changed anything. The Unvierese will still go on. Like watch "The Incovient truth" what he says about our planet just being that little dot. Everything that has/will ever go on will be on that little dot. Its not tolate to stop global warming, Start making the difference. Don't always count on tommorow.
