| Ugly Cassanova – Spilled Milk Factory Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
definitely about sex and one night stands. no commitment. "one bite of the wedding cake and i just about threw up" and then he proceeds to move to hit on the bridesmaids. he doesn't get the babies or anything. So obviously this song is simply about lustful pointless meaningless sex. =] as for "spilled milk"....well do i really need to go there? |

| Ugly Cassanova – Pacifico Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
it's about being promised something, and then consequently getting fucked over and given the opposite. "so sharpen your teeth or lay flat" i think he is saying Sharpen your teeth as in say what you mean, don't say something unless it's true, or lay flat, and don't say anything. |

| Modest Mouse – The Fruit That Ate Itself Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| we all sin, but we blame it on someone else or just pretend it doesnt exist. we teach the fruit to eat itself, referring to adam and eve of course. the "walk across the country" bit reminds me of a travelling salesman or something. it's got the same theme as "we're fixed right where we stand" from The View; science and technology is going to help us now and destroy us later, we're not moving anywhere. "are you going to get sick worrying about your health?" is saying why worry about what's a given (dying, earth being ruined by humanity, tomorrow's pop quiz) it's just going to make right now (living, relaxing, hanging with friends) less pleasurable. so we're all shitheads doomed to hell...well so what? suck it up and let's party. | |
| Modest Mouse – Sin Gun Chaser Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| i think he's talking about making music...how people need something to react to, just to feel anything. "make us depressed or sad, make us happy or something" is the people begging them to make us feel anything. "i am your sin gun chaser changer" is in reply and it's just him telling everyone that music is there to stimulate us and he's okay with being used to make it for that purpose | |
| Rise Against – 3 Day Weekend Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| "aside from the name that holds us together" mainly makes me think it's referring to a family member, though the name could be a title as well, like girlfriend or something. the song is about people changing over time to the point of not recognizing each other anymore. | |
| Atreyu – Right Side of the Bed Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
As from the CD cover, which you cheap bastards should buy if you really liked this band, instead of downloading mp3's and guessing the content; And I can see her now, Dancing around, her drink in hand All her baggage in tow. I just want to forget and let go Of all the joy, of all the pain I took your guilt and placed it into me. And now I kiss it goodbye. Our last dance ended fatally. Who's sleeping on my side of the bed tonight? Have you ever cried so hard? Baby, you just died. Who's sleeping on my side of the bed tonight? Have you ever cried so hard? Have you ever cried so hard? And there she goes again, Another masquerade in false circumstance. She'll fuck you just for the taste. I just wish that I could replace All the memories of what makes my blood run cold. And as your blood flows through me, I say goodbye to what we had. She came and went, I gnawed through my lip. Makeup smeared in her eyes, Each sob's a reason to say goodbye. Sometimes when you're holding on, You'll never see the light. With flowers in her hair, gazed upon with dead lover's eyes. She never looked so good, And I never felt so right. I felt so wrong. |

| Elliott Smith – Stickman Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
You guys are all way too complicated and taking it too biographically. "Stickman" is referring to stick figures...Shooting blanks and talking about being chased by monsters off the page. For some reason stick figures drawn by children almost always are carrying weapons or in a fight. He's "living with one dimension dead" he only thinks about the past. He's indifferent and apathetic, and feels overly simplified. "Lonely makes me blue Envy turns me green Hate might paint me red" He's just saying his emotions control him and show too easily. It's a song about the feelings withdrawal has evoked in him, as chloricicon says, and he mentions being clean in the last two lines. "But not just now when it's easy to stay clean When no one sees where you're bleeding" He's turning to cutting himself to help his waning addiction? I'm not sure about this line. |

| Modest Mouse – People as Places as People Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
i think "looking for a face, love or somewhere to go" is meant as one line... "looking for a face, love, or somewhere to go" he is in a new place, looking for something familiar, someone to be with, somewhere to be, and he realizes all he wants is to be back at home with his friends and he made a mistake. |

| Modest Mouse – Steam Engenius Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
It's about a factorized robot sacrifice/messiah. Steam Engenius is a word play yes, to me I think of it kind of as another way to say "Artificial Intelligence" or mechanical feelings or something. "Human nature was installed in me, i did what was right but naturally it wasn't natural" He just did what he was programmed to do, but he knows it wasn't his choice. Same idea as "I didn't want it, you gave me deity" he never asked to be born to do this, or save everyone, he was forced into it. I think it's about how we rely on technology to solve all our problems. "Like a rickshaw getting pulled around by another rickshaw"; by trying to fix things with technology, we fix the problem we're focusing on but we create new ones at the same time. It reminds me of The View's "We are fixed right where we stand" We can't fix this, we are just digging ourselves deeper. No sacrifice will satisfy us, no messiah will save us. We're on our own. And God, are we fucked. |

| Modest Mouse – Little Motel Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I've gone through this...This song is basically a reinstatement of the phrase "we were dead before the ship even sank". He knows it won't work, it sounds like she fell out of love with him, or they just fought too much. They try to hang on, knowing its futile, they're just waiting for it to end. It's slightly hopeful, because you know when the relationship is finally over it's just that horrible feeling of relief and anguish at the same time, but even though it hurts that badly, eventually it's going to give him the chance to be happy with someone else. And if they hung on forever, they could never be happy with each other. "And before then we had made a wish That we would be missed If one or another just would not exist" Is simply stating that they made an impact on each other's lives in a positive way, and even if their relationship has gone to shit now, they want to remember the good times and what brought them together in the first place. Their lives wouldnt have been worth living if they'd never met. Might as well be my theme song, haha. A great song, though out of the norm, it was sorely needed from an amazing band instead of all the shitty attempts from generic groups. Amazing, breathtaking, pure Isaac Brock. I think I'm in love :P |

| Modest Mouse – Education Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| i dunno why more people havent commented this...it is one of the best songs on the new CD in my opinion. i think they've already got the lyrics meanings here, that education can't wash away instincts and we're still animals despite our superiority complex. | |
| Modest Mouse – March Into the Sea Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Simply put, this song is rather obviously about evolution. Or rather, de-evolution. "Our tails wagged and then fell off, but we just turned around and marched back to the sea" is referring to when the first organism crawled out of the primordial soup of an ocean. It evolved, eventually becoming thousands of different life forms, including humans. And right now, we have changed beyond natural selection, we are destroying the world and our own race. We are marching back into the sea. "Treat me like disease / Like the rats & fleas" ; humanity is a plague on the Earth, doing nothing FOR nature but instead intervening in natural ways and ruining them. I don't think it's "forced health". That line actually reads "Give me forests so dead I wish death on myself" which I believe basically sums up Isaac's feelings when he was writing this. "Well, we all stumbled 'round, tangled up in our cords From our phones, VCRs, and our worldly woes A ha ha! March on!" Tangled in the cords meaning figuratively that we have dug our own graves by creating technology, and it's too far gone to turn back, because we are doomed anyways, so he finishes by saying "March on", keep doing what you're doing because we've lost our chance anyways, and we might as well enjoy the ride on the path we've made leading to the complete annihilation of Earth. Kind of the same message as from Dashboard; enjoy your ride, everyone. :) |

| Modest Mouse – Blame It on the Tetons Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This is one of the only mouse songs I can't totally justify in my mind..I don't think it's all addressing the same problems, I think there was a lot on Isaac's mind when he wrote this so no one explaination will fit every verse. Tetons, I think it is either the tribe, or as someone said earlier, there is a beer company in the mountain range named after the Indians, I think maybe he means he's blaming his life on alcohol or the company for making alcohol. "Blame it on the web, but the spider's your problem now" is one of the best lines in here, it's saying don't focus on the little problems, cause you won't see the big one that's headed towards you. The web might be life, and spider might be a metaphor for death. Who knows. Decent song, not one of their best in my opinion. |

| Modest Mouse – Perfect Disguise Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think it's about a girlfriend, a close friend, or maybe someone in the music industry who thought they were too good for him. They leave him feeling numb, he doesn't care anymore, he even wishes them luck because he still loves them. He realizes he's been used, the person just pushed him down to further their own ambitions. It's about being "out of your league" "Well, good luck believing every word that’s said I hope you have enough space in your head I don’t know, broke my back " He's calling them shallow and gullible for looking down on him. "I don't know, broke my back" The experience basically broke him, he doesn't want to trust anyone anymore. He's numb, and just doesnt care, or is trying to convince himself he doesnt, at least. |

| Modest Mouse – Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
"Oh, noose Tied myself in, tied myself too tight" He's not actually hanging himself...this line is about digging your own grave, creating problems for yourself, and by the time you realize what you've been doing it's too late to change the past and you're in shit too deep, so you let yourself sink even further. "Looking kind of anxious in your cross-armed stance Like a bad tempered prom queen at a homecoming dance" This represents the people around him; they're getting annoyed by his indecisiveness, they're anxious because he cant make up his mind, keeps changing himself and blaming it on them. "Prom queen at a homecoming dance" is to show how out of place he feels, he thinks he could be happier at the prom instead where he'd be the center of attention. "And I claim I'm not excited with my life anymore So I blame this town, this job, these friends, the truth is it's myself" He realizes he's creating his own problems and trying to create a scapegoat, but he's coming to terms that he's done this to himself. "And I'm trying to understand myself and pinpoint who I am When I finally get it figured out, I've changed the whole damn plan" He's trying to figure out who he is, how to change himself and fix his problems, but by the time he gets it, he has different problems and he's already become someone else, he's always one step behind. "Talking shit about a pretty sunset Blanketing opinions that I'll probably regret soon" He realizes he is a cynic, always sees the worst in things, even things that have no bad about them. The sunset is probably a metaphor for life in general; he's taking it for granted, and even while he knows he's wasting it away he cant help but make himself miserable. "Blanketing opinions" means he begins to realize he shouldnt say everything he thinks because he knows he'll regret saying it later, because his mindframe will have changed. "Changed my mind so much I can't even trust it My mind changed me so much I can't even trust myself" He no longer has any idea what the hell's going on in his life, he doesn't want to act on anything because he changes his mind so much. & all the indecisiveness in his head catches up to him, and changes himself, he becomes even more paranoid and cynical. The instrumental ending speaks louder than the lyrics...By coming to terms with himself, looking at all his faults without flinching, he gives way to optimism and thinks he can finally change, the song becomes more upbeat and hopeful, but there's still a hint of doubt, desperation and hopelessness behind it all because he knows he will continue to change throughout the rest of his life. Undoubtedly, the most relatable song ever. |

| Modest Mouse – Cowboy Dan Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Cowboy Dan isn't the despicable character, he's the protaganist. Industrialization and developement are the despicable things in this song; It revolves around how his home is being taken from him right before his eyes. "I didn't move to the city, the city moved to me". This song has such a desperate feeling to it, the futility of life or actions. He's so hurt by what's happening and changing in his life he goes to the reservation and gets drunk. "Can't do it, not even if sober Can't get that engine turned over" Is showing how he can't change with the times or the land, "You know we need oxygen to breathe"; How all the developement going on around him is making him feel claustrophobic, he is being contained by society and civilization when he used to be a Cowboy. He is just caught in the times, this song expresses the powerlessness he feels to do anything. "And I want out desperately" The way Isaac says that makes it the most beautiful, raw, relatable line i've ever heard. |

| Modest Mouse – White Lies, Yellow Teeth Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
it's about trying to find your place in the world, life, religion. "the sky does not ever end, the air just gets thinner" there's no heaven. "you can keep digging down and down inside and even turn around or find in hell, you're digging up again" He does'nt believe in hell either, "he chose lifting 10 times his weight and natural body armor and then on the day his mother gave he came out as an insect" is definitely my favorite line. The guy was trying to be the strongest, but the system jipped him. it's all about how you can expect something amazing and when you get it, you realize it's not what you wanted at all, you didnt word it well enough, and they kind of "white lied" by giving it to you, through a loophole, in a way you never meant. Which is basically what religion is, getting all our hopes up and crashing them. Definitely about religion and preaching. |

| Modest Mouse – Whenever You See Fit (with 764-HERO) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
it's about being driven insane by loneliness and regret. "Talking on the phone like your own best friend" I think he's talking to himself, pretending there's a friend on the other line to fill it up. "Everything you ever said Ever thought or ever meant or ever did You'll wake up early and you'll live to regret it all" That basically sums up the song. He's just looking back on his life, trying to figure out how he got to be like this, and realizing he pushed his friends away and caused it all to happen to himself. |

| Modest Mouse – Sunspots in the House of the Late Scapegoat Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Shortly said, this song is about how we are still in the process of ruining Earth and beauty with our own forms of attractiveness that really just hurt us all in the end. | |
| Modest Mouse – Sunspots in the House of the Late Scapegoat Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think this song is about traveling The first line until "Beneath the Dirty Brown Dirt" is when he is taking in the new sights and like...just marveling in the new adventures. He's in the middle of the wilderness, then after he gets "twenty miles down the islands" he finds a big mall, it kind of ruins the illusion, and he realizes that everything is just corporation run and there's no such thing as "natural" anymore because humans invaded it all. There is speculation that sunspots are caused by the lead expelled from Earth's atmosphere along with other human caused things...and a scapegoat is someone who gets blamed. so he is saying the sunspots of the earth are the human interaction, and in our houses, the paint is still peeling, meaning expelling lead and ruining our environment. The muscle cars, made of lead are also ruining it. He realizes his best friend (I've got a fine fine friend) is just like everyone else, (it was all in the same gray ghost) that when we die we arent unique, we're just all leading to the same universal cause of destroying and encroaching nature. "The parts to pound attractive Your feeling you owe on your size is bleeding" We think we're making the earth more attractive by developing it, but he realizes we are just making it smaller and hurting ourselves by delving all our resources. In short, this song is about humanity, traveling, nature and developement, a lot like Novacain Stain and kinda the same feel to it. |

| Modest Mouse – It Always Rains on a Picnic Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I'm a manic depressive, I think Isaac Brock is too. To me this song perfectly describes it, using the picnic as a metaphor...Whenever you're in the manic phase, you can be happy. But whenever things start looking up too much, the scales tip and you slide into this depression. And you can never stay on one for too long, because you always get your hopes up again. "Don't let go quite yet" Don't let go of life because just because of the rain; you can always reschedule the picnic. maybe this line is trying is about relationships, he's trying to convince his dining partner to not give up on him yet just because he's run into a bad spot in his life, because it will get better. |

| Modest Mouse – A Different City Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
"I want to live in a city with no friends or family. I'm going to look out the window of my coloured TV. I want to remember to remember to forget you forgot me. I'm going to look out the window of my coloured TV." Brock is talking about a friend or maybe a girlfriend, blew him off. They drifted apart but Brock misses their relationship, but he thinks/knows his friend doesn't so he takes on the "If you don't need me I don't need you" tone to cover it. The TV is the window that helps him feel connected to people and have a normal life when he is antisocial and isolating himself. He gets so absorbed in watching it, he forgets he has his own life, or maybe that's what he was trying to do. "I want to remember to remember to forget you forgot me" He keeps having doubts, considers trying to contact his friend and make amends, or maybe his friend tries to apologize, but Brock thinks if he gets close to this person again, it will just reoccur and he doesn't want to be hurt again, so he goes back to watching TV. "Through the cracks in the wall Slow motion for all Dripped out of the bars Someone smart once said nothing at all" He's feeling disjointed from the rest of the world, he can hear things in the background but he isn't listening. Maybe on drugs, but he's sitting on the couch still. he feels out of place, everythings out of time with him. hes thinking so hard about trying not to think at all. The stuff "through the cracks in the wall" and "dripping out of the bars" are the thoughts and doubts that slip through the protection he's put up around himself, he's still thinking of confronting his friend but decides sometimes you have to be okay with silence and it's better for his situation. "I'm watching TV I guess that's a solution. They gave me a receipt that said I didn't buy nothing. So rust is a fire and our blood oxidizes, My eyes rolled around, all around on the carpet. Hit the deck, it's the decal man, Standing upside down and talking out of his pants" He's saying he thinks TV is a solution, because it makes him feel like he's doing something, that time's moving. The receipt part is when he realizes he thought he was solving the problem but really he hasn't done a thing. It hurts him, he realizes he's not getting anywhere like this. His blood is rusting from not being able to move. "eyes rolling around" he is taking a sarcastic tone about the entire song..once again, "if you dont need me i dont need you". "rolling around on the carpet" he is trying to focus on something to block everything out but he fails. Finally his friend gets a hold of him, the "decal man". Brock thinks he's making amends just for appearances (decal man, meaning image man, or imaginary) or that maybe their mutual friends urged the guy on to. So Brock still feels isolated, and he knows his friend is lying, "talking out of his pants", making promises he cant keep, saying things he doesn't mean. "Through the cracks in the wall Slow motion for all Left holding the ball and a part for your car" The doubts slip in again, Brock thinks it over, reconsiders that maybe he should accept the apology. "Left holding the ball", the friend is done talking, Brock is the one who can decide now, he's got the power to toss it off or catch it. It's his turn to reply to his friend. "And a part for your car"... The part is Brock. He's ready to come out of isolation, but he thinks his friend thinks of him as just an object. Brock probably does not feel human himself, so he refers to himself as metal, because he's so rusted over from going so long without contact or motion that he feels rusted and robotic. He's leaning towards accepting his friend back because he realizes in the long run it won't matter. He gets over being childish and sarcastic. He's going to leave the Different City and return home with his friend even though he knows its utter bullshit. "I don't know but I been told, you never die & you never grow old" shows in a lot of modest mouse songs. personally I believe it's meant as in they know the songs will live on, and it's capturing how they felt at the moment, it won't die because it is living on in their fans minds too. Never growing old means there will always be someone who connects with their songs. they want to leave a mark and not be forgotten. long interpretation sorry, but i think its accurate, i've felt this way many times i know exactly what it's saying. but to each his own. |
