| Red Hot Chili Peppers – What It Is (Nina's Song) Lyrics | 18 years ago |

This song was written by Flea and Nina Hagen (with Anthony taking third credit) - Nina Hagen sang it in German (song titled Was Es It) in her 1983 album Angstlos and in English in her 1983 album Fearless. It showed up in RHCP's Out in LA outtakes album in 1994 with Anthony singing and Flea rocking the bass in a stripped down acoustic version that was never put through production. The Hagen versions were both fully mastered 11 years prior for her CDs. RHCP formed in 1983 from the band Tony Flow and the Miraculous Masters of Mayhem - they were just starting out in the LA club scene when Nina Hagen used the song on her albums. Much of her work is co-written so it makes sense that she may have approached Flea and Anthony about a project. Hagen is a famous punk singer/songwriter. She was born in 1955 - Flea and Anthony in 1962. If Nina was having a relationship with them in 1983 then they were 21 and she was 28. Possible - but I don't think so. I think they were just all part of the hot LA rock scene and they did the song together. Anyway the lyrics are much more like Hagen's work, although Anthony wrote about dolphins later in Behind the Sun. :) The bass is obviously full-on Flea - a really cool song in my opinion. |
