Life long friendship. Growing. "Been a long journey, certain shit just don't concern me" Growing out of being a BOY into becoming a MAN! Makes me think of the late 80s and one of my closest friends in the world Shawn Ziegler. We'd fight in the streets and do all kinds of dumb stuff. But that was in 1988 when we were 16. Now we're in our 50s, MEN.

Simple Minds – Boys From Brazil Lyrics 1 year ago
@[Solo4126:42702] close.

Sharing a title with a book by Ira Levin, the song seemed to share similar themes although Jim later contradicted that: "It isn't about the book although that was the starting point. Rather than find a baseline like 'Death To The Neo-Nazis' (as did the book), we wanted to be ambiguous. It was just a point, a motivation. It's a game we play, and when it comes to lyrics I think we're too scared to commit ourselves. But that song was concerned with seeing, in Britain, that almost total Neo-Nazi romance, which is really dangerous. There are lines in that, like 'Not just a boy that's crying wolf' and 'Someone else is screaming up at our door'. I was really pleased with them. It is a fascination with style."
Despite wanting to be ambiguous, Jim later revealed he had the British neo-Nazis like the National Front in his sights when he wrote it.

The song was recorded using the working title of Chicago.

@[MP3754:41271] Pretty sure nobody has put a gun to your head and forced you to listen. And seeing as you went out of your way to make that comment means you went LOOKING for this song. You must have some type of feelings for it. I don\'t go out of my way to criticize things I don\'t like, I try my best to avoid them. But that\'s just me.

yeah, its better to let someone just beat the sh!t out of you and not defend yourself. But another group can blast you to kingdom come. when that happens it\'s called "standing your ground". Then the narrative gets a rewrite! Saw it with Trayvon (911 operator EXPLICITLY told Zimmerman NOT to follow this young man! He did it anyway) John Crawford III and many others! I agree with one of my heroes Malcolm X:\r\n "Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery." \r\n

No, this is what its actually about:

It's difficult to determine when The American was actually written. Apparently it was inspired by the bright colours of an exhibition of modern American art that Jim visited, being written in the back of a van while driving through the East Coast of America.

Simple Minds – New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) Lyrics 4 years ago
@[pierrenyork:33899] big sleep is about the death of a friend:

So where did you go?
Where do you go in the big sleep?
Going out in the deep sleep.
Is where you're wandering now?
So where did you go?
When you're in the big sleep?
Drifting in wildlife,
And still you're wandering now.
We were on the top and the world was spinning,
We were only young in the whirlpool of warning.
Communication lost in the thundering rain style,
A shelter from the storm in the early beginning,
Going out in the big sleep, out in the big sleep,
Could have been years, you know it could have been years,
Or only seconds ago.

Big Sleep, deep sleep.

Where are you now?
Now that you're up in big sleep.
Valuable friend,
They saw you leaving this way.

We were on the top and the world was spinning,
We were only young in the whirlpool of warning.
Communication lost in the thundering rain style,
A shelter from the storm in the early beginning.
Where did you go?
Immaculate friend.
For a lifetime I'm grateful,
And it's only seconds away.

Big Sleep, deep sleep.

For evermore.
If only you could see me,
If only you could see me,
If only you could see,
Forever.
Coming home in the big sleep,
Coming home.

Those lyrics don't sound like they're talking about getting high.

Where are you now?
Now that you're up in big sleep.
Valuable friend,
They saw you leaving this way.

IMHO it sounds like death

U2 – Pride (In the Name of Love) Lyrics 7 years ago
@[jayschif:17503] Sorry, didn't post the link . But Pride IS about MLK and Jesus as well

Pride (In the Name of Love)" is a song by Irish rock band U2. The second track on the band's 1984 album, The Unforgettable Fire, it was released as the album's lead single in September 1984. Written about Martin Luther King, Jr., the song received mixed critical reviews at the time, but it was a major commercial success for the band and has since become one of the band's most popular songs. "Pride" appeared on the compilation The Best of 1980-1990 as the opening track, and on the 2006 compilation U218 Singles.

The song ranked number 388 on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and is included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.[2]

Simple Minds – Wonderful in Young Life Lyrics 12 years ago
This song to me means exactly what the title states. Being young is wonderful. Since I am a parent of young adults and older children,I can see a lot of me in them. A few of the lyrics the way I see them and what they mean to me:

Wonderful in young life.
Two weeks in another town,
Sending shivers along in the spine,
Of your friends when they call.

(traveling is always exciting when you are young especially with friends)

Here she comes,
The wild wind blows,
In rhythms of season,
In young life and reasons.
Deceiving and pleasing to some,
Wild girls wild,
In epic beauty wild,
Surviving these changes,
In paces and faces,
In free wonder.
Free wonder,
Free wonder style.

(that young love that has you in it's grip. when you're growing up things change so quickly that all you
can do is "survive". because before you know it you're an adult)

Little Egypt eyes.
Wonderful.
And the world can't wait.
Wonderful.
And the beat's white hot.
Wonderful.

("Little Egypt eyes" makes me think of not my sons but my daughter. the "world could not wait" she is all
grown up now with her own family. no longer the two year old that would sleep next to me)

Dream, dream, dream,
It's the eighties' youthful theme.
Loving the city,
A theme for great cities,
And loved ones,
And love.

(it's all so "dreamlike" being young! you think you are invincible! a youthful energetic "theme",energy
needed to explore the city with friends and loved ones)

Memorize,
A crowded swallow skies.
Whatever the weather,
The climate is perfect for,
So young,
And so young in life.

(your memories of youth, the sky is the absolute limit! and my favorite verse that always brings a little
tear to my eyes when looking at my 12 year old. Whatever the weather,The climate is perfect for,So young
and so young in life" Meaning that no matter what the weather is,as long as you are with that special
person it could be raining cats and dogs but you see rainbows. Your worldview isn't cynical because you
still see the good and think the bad can be turned into good.

An angel day,
Angels coming your way,
Screaming good fortune,
And follow,
And look at the memories,
That are stuck in our eyes.

(this is the future. now it is time to grow up into adulthood. but you have your "guardian angels" tell-
ing you not to fear. You have "good fortune" so "follow" me,you are protected by God. But at the same
every once in a while, you will look at the memories of youth and good times. Even if adult hood is not
that great with all it's pressures and ups and downs, you'll always have those memories that are "stuck
in your eyes)

God I'm singing memories.
Hey I'm singing memories.
Look I'm singing memories.

(you find yourself without a conscious effort swept away in "nostalgia". from either a song,a scent or
something intangible. it feels as if when you open your eyes you'd be transported back to that time.
but it's so close yet so very far....

Simple Minds – Sanctify Yourself Lyrics 13 years ago
Lol! That's okay! And I know this reply is late but I am rarely on here. To answer your question: Personally I am a Christian and believe in the God of the Bible. But I don't force what I belive on others and I don't "condemn" others if they don't share in what I believe. Now should everyone have some kind of faith? That's a tricky question. Because if you look at it like this some people say they don't believe in anything or have "faith" in anything. That unto itself is a "circle without end" if you will, lol! A persons "faith" is in NOT having "faith" in anything. Also what are "wrongs"? People are individuals and what is "wrong" to you and me may be right as rain to someone else. I used to be Catholic and "confess" my sins but I only "confess" to God now and not a priest. I know these may not be the answers you are looking for (lol)but they are (to me)true answers for the world we live in,ie;people are INDIVIDUALS even inside the "same" group(just look at Ireland for example)so it would be kinda fake for me to give a "churchy" umbrella answer, lol! Take care and God bless!

Johnny Cash – The Man Comes Around Lyrics 14 years ago
I see a lot of people have posted that they are not "religious". Well I am not "religious" either, but I believe in God and His son Jesus Christ. To me "religion" is something that can be put on and off like clothing. But nowadays we are a "modern" people and all "belief systems" are of equal value because we don't want to offend someone. God may or may not exist or some people call Him a different name. The Bible is either evil,a work of fiction or just not applicable to today's standards. Or worse yet it is not the true and living word of God. I could go on and on and on but I won't. I am not trying to force my views upon anyone. Why? Because the Bible has predicted this long ago,it even says in the song "listen to the words long written down",a LOT of people (atually MOST) will be in hell when Judgement is passed. There was a blog that broke this song down perfectly but I cannot find it now. When the time comes and people FINALLY realize that God is REAL no matter what you thought in life. And when this surreal nightmare of BILLIONS upon BILLIONS upon even more BILLIONS are judged,it will be a sad day that I wouldn't wish on my worse enemy.

Simple Minds – Speed Your Love To Me Lyrics 16 years ago
Deodata, lol yeah...the word 'speed' (the drug) was around back in 83. This is in my Top SM songs! To me it's NOT the words, but the EMOTIONS they convey. 'Cause lets face it, only JK really knows for SURE what his lyrics mean! Lol! This song makes me think of my first TRUE love! And how I would rush home from school just to see her! About how I would sneak out of the house to 'Speed My Love' to her. About how when I joined the service, I'd think about my first leave to get back to her. And how I eventually married her and am STILL with her. That's what sets SM lyrics apart from any other band in the WORLD. Their lyrics are all things to all people and I'm shocked that nobody has commented on any of these great songs.
