| Scrubs has introduced me to some great obscure or unappreciated artist, Josh Radin being one of them. I really thought this song, along with his entire album, was really good, and i hope he has more to be released. I also have to add, hearing this song makes me tear up like a baby. | |

The lyrics are different for the organ version. And another funny thing about this song is that it is the same chord progression as glycerin by bush. This song was actually one of Jeff's least favorites, he said in an interview that he felt that it was always incomplete, and that the way he recorded it was very different than the way he normally would, so he felt it didn't shine as well as it could have. (i don't remember where i got that, it was either of the NMH.org site or the 33 1/3 book) The song has to do with how he felt alone and alienated when he moved to Seattle, and when his other friends migrated to new locations. This was about the time when he was living in a closet and he often saw "ghosts", and he had the dream about monks with buckets. So it was a mix of different inspirations. |

I think that this song has two interpretations in one song. The first would be what bobbydowns stated, that it had to do with Charlie Parker, "Blistering Pree, all smiling and swollen, Makes babies to breathe, With their hearts hanging open all over the sheets" and "with bees in her breath and the rest of her ringing They'll sting through her chest with a force hard and beating" is referring to how Pree was a healthy and happy baby until she contracted pneumonia which affected her lungs and heart. Then the line "Until wonderfully wet she will get, Until she's soaked inside her clothes" maybe the baby, it lungs are filled with fluid, like what happens to some pneumonia victims and then this causes her to get very sweaty and sickly The second interpretation I see is the miscarriage idea. "Blistering Pree, all smiling and swollen" is reffering to how pree gets pregnant which is a blessing for her, "Makes babies to breathe, With their hearts hanging open all over the sheets, As soft as beets in some brown dresser drawer" shows how she tries to take care of the baby but then miscarries any way. "And with bees in her breath and the rest of her ringing, They'll sting through her chest with a force hard and beating" shows how she becomes aroused ( I think the stings through her chest part may refer to the nipples getting hard when aroused, I know that sounds kinda stupid but thats what I get out of that line) "Until wonderfully wet she will get, Until she's soaked inside her clothes" thats when they have sex, "And there is no sorry to be sorry for" means the accidental pregnancy isn't a thing to feel sorry or ashamed about. "For a roll around the floor some afternoon so sound and soft, It made her swallow all her sweat " is how they didn't consider pregnancy as a consequence of their carelessness and how it caught up with her and bit her in the ass, "With every bit of breath she coughs, And when the day it came to pour all her babies, All across the bathroom floor, She will be swimming in them all forevermore" is the actual birth of the baby, which is difficult and ends up killing the baby and Pree. Jeff Mangum is a genius with words, and he creates such imagery. I feel like I can see it happening now. |
