i've been listening to this song constantly.
and to some what of a misfortune, i believe i empathize with this narrator, a whole lot.

so basically,
jenny sings in the very first lines about all the things she's amounted to this relationship. that she can no longer be in this relationship because of the emotional "bruises" he inflicted, or even perhaps that she fabricated.
as a result, jenny rises above being someone's else "silver lining" by becoming "gold". this is probably a play on the fact that gold is a more precious metal than silver, thereby justifying her decision of leaving her lover.

i'll admit that the line "i was your silver lining, high up on my toes/ while you were running through fields of hitchhikers/ as the story goes" is very vague. perhaps it is meant to be received in such a way, as it is only mentioned once compared to the chorus. I think that it shows how being "on her toes", she attempted to be seen by the guy, searching through a field of aimless nomads, but was unsuccessful. She conclude the verse with "as the story goes", as if to say, "it's the past, and i cannot do anything to change it" alluding her regret.

you can deffinitally see regret in my favorite line of the whole song, "i never felt so wicked/ as when i willed our love to die". I'm not really sure why i like this line so much, but i tend to pause and take a breath as i like to think our narrator might as well

moreover, i think that part of the reason that the chorus is repeated so frequently is because jenny is trying to convince herself of her decision. because now she has to face the ramifications of being alone, even though she contends that she's become "gold" or better off.

despite her "hooray"'s i think jenny's character longs for being someone's sun behind a cloud again.

i do.
