I would say the phrase "to stay alive until the light has faded then pray for light that seems so long to come" tells us that "him" can be any symbol of salvation. Jesus would certainly be one but it is whoever "honey" would turn to hoping for salvation when the time comes. Death Cab for Cutie covers similar ground in "I'll follow you into the dark" ... I'll follow you into the dark No blinding light Or tunnels to gates of white Just our hands clasped so tight Waiting for the hint of a spark OK I've read each and every one of the 215 comments posted and no one has referenced the last line quoted above. The singer is not a "non believer" in the Christian sense, nor is he a "believer." He is ambivalent, as so many humans are as we ponder the Next. "Waiting for a hint of a spark" means he and his lover will be together as they plunge into the dark. Should they see a hint of a spark it would be welcome. They're just not counting on it ... cheers |
