| The Books – If Not Now, Whenever Lyrics

I once was in between living areas for a few days and went for roughly 60 hours without sleeping. I was sitting at the student union at the college I went to resting my eyes between classes with this song on. I was so sleep deprived, everything suddenly made perfect sense in this song. It is the essence of sleep deprivation. All the muddled thoughts and confusion. The phrase "and your head is made of clouds but your feet are made of ground and your running down" captures that state of mind perfectly. The sample "i had stayed up for 46 hours in a row" plays right on top of that phrase. It makes sense. I can't get enough of this song ever since. |

it seems as if hes talking from the prespective of a christ like person (other worldly). sent to this world to be the object of hate for the world. but, instead of sacrificing himself for the sake of humanity, he refuses and chooses to burn the world instead, so finally he can feel love in the world. crazy shit. |

I don't know much, but I just realized "And in the distance there's a gathering that no longer seems so far away." is death. |

I can't really know what it means, but to me, when I'm under the influence of LSD it all makes perfect sense. I especially like the line "it's the trees of this day that I do battle with for the light." Ahhhh, love it. Explaining it though....I dont know...I get it when I'm tripping, but I can't put it into words. Its just beauty. Its just life! |

I definitely agree that it has some meaning inspired by the LSD experience. This song, along with a lot of animal collective songs bring up so much imagery and emotion that I have experienced under the influence of LSD. Especially when it comes to talking to people. When I'm tripping, I don't really care about what people are saying to me. I'm polite always, because I care about people and everything, but the things they say are always so banal. Talking to me about a song they really don't care about or understand? That shit's behind me man, I'm just trying to live. Ya know?
These words can be interpreted so many different ways, though, which is why animal collective is so fuckin amazing! |

finding meaning, happiness, and hope is exactly what LSD does. most people who take acid become a lot more driven to carry out their dreams in their life because it makes you realize all you have is your life. the song isnt about "drugs" its about LSD, which is a drug, but not a drug that makes you escape life, it throws you into it. |

to me this song sounds like the dude is just tripping on acid, or perhaps MDMA. Not being able to sleep and being hot and the need to move around and wanting to walk around and talk with someone you love are all things that happen under the influence of LSD (at least for me).
the line "when the sun goes down well go out again" kind of sounds like "son you fell off the wagon" which i think is purposeful, if theyre referencing their drug usage and how people have this negative view of who you are if you take psychedelics. |

Honestly, i have absolutely no clue what most of this means. I can understand the whole interpretation of Beach Bum, but, the way some of it seems to come across to me, is like...i dont even know. khatru seems to me to be like a bird or something. I think its named siberian khatru because it has excerpts from "The Firebird" by Igor Stravinsky, a Russian composer of the early/middle 1900s. Other than that little tidbit of information, id prolly most likely agree with beach bum's interpretation |
