| The Beatles – Julia Lyrics | 18 years ago |

And yeah, I know it wasn't perfect for the two of them--after all, she did abandon him in a fashion. But she was a friend and an adult confidante, and he would even run away from Mimi and crash at Julia's place for even weeks at a time; and according to his own recollections, they got along alright. Let's face it. It was love. |

| Before I read the Davies biography, I knew it was a really pretty, emotional song. Now, I listen to it much more closely; Julia was probably the only adult with whom John could really connect as a kid, and it was cool how he could treat his mother like an equal because she lived so far away. She could have been an older sister. When she died so suddenly, he repressed it in his gung-ho John way and didn't even act as though he noticed. I guess this is the cathartic way to express this love. | |
| Patrick Watson – The Great Escape Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Judging from the tone, I think it's more like trying to find an escape from the general humdrum existence of something like a mid-life crisis or an office cubicle or something equally unamazing. Not necessarily something as rash as suicide, but just a daydreamy, stare-out-the-window longing for a vacation, fame, adventure. | |
| Arcade Fire – My Body Is a Cage Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Based on the context of the entire album--the opposition to oppressive religion, superficial culture, and just the whole dystopian theme--I'm guessing that not only is he talking about not wanting love, but not being able to. There's 1984 where the main character hates a woman on the side of the groupthinkers; he analyzes his thoughts and discovers it's not so much for what he stands for, but because he wants to love her in a physical way. But he can't, for love is saved for the area reserved for those in the government. This occurred to me when I was reading the Arcade Fire's blog. 1984 is a popular work to begin with, and then Win mentioned an essay by Orwell. So I'm guessing he's read that, too. This being the last song, my guess is that he's summarizing everything that's he's talked about over the course of the album and used it as a reply to "No Cars Go," the second to last song. "No Cars Go" is really positive and kind of like a trumpet call--"Little babies, Let's go!"--and yet, in this last song, he signs off with a protest. "I can't... because my body is a cage." |

| I so dig those electronic beats. | |
| Owen Pallett – The Pooka Sings Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
One of the most frustrating songs to sing along with, yet one of the most frustratingly, confusingly beautiful. The beginning? Suspenseful, wraithlike, substantially sparse. The middle benefits from a piano accompaniment that slowly crescendoes, then, fades, then comes back, like waves. Then, the album ends too soon. One interview claims this song is a sort of "disclaimer" where Owen Pallett claims that all he has said has nothing to do with his personal beliefs, or something along these lines. The pooka's a magical Irish creature, a sort of shapeshifting creature of myth. Google the Wikipedia page. The Pooka wings away His power o'er me's at an end And I put down the violin I leave it down, never again! |

| Owen Pallett – This Lamb Sells Condos Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Wow, I suddenly feel like a very stupid American. I was assuming that this was an everyman--or everyrealtor--attack, but I realize that this fits Brad J. Lamb down to the dime. But regardless of my shameful citizenship, I still have an extreme appreciation for his awesome instrumentation and creative mojo. Is that not universal? | |
| The Dear Hunter – Blood of the Rose Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Yeah, it's about time an actual native speaker translated it. DigitalMe91 finally got it right. I'm guessing that it has some kind of Medieval reference to Notre-Dameish witch burnings. As for the spelling errors, "Sangre, sangre de la rosa Sigue en paz sin el pasado Reze, reze por su alma Ella murira en el bautismo del fuego" Believe me. I know what I'm talking about. |
