Thriving Ivory – Angels on the Moon (Album version) Lyrics 17 years ago
Cool Song. He wants to live every day to the fullest. It sounds like he may be suffering from a terminal illness, but as a result, he has gained a strong appreciation of life. He's trying to convince others who have not gained this perspective to also live meaningful lives, not taking any day for granted.

Also, I interpret the line, "angels on the moon where everyone you know never leaves too soon," as meaning he will not soon forget the important persons in his life who have died before him.

Eels – Things The Grandchildren Should Know Lyrics 17 years ago
He struggles with introverted, anti-social tendencies, and he remarks that just saying hello to someone when walking his dog is a challenge he had to overcome. Yet, he makes it clear that he enjoys people and enjoys his life. Even though I'm not as introverted as I used to be, I can relate to this song.

Barbra Streisand – The Way We Were Lyrics 17 years ago
Our memory distorts the true nature of our past relationships. An old flame from many, many years ago recently contacted me and told me she thought her life would have been much better if we had stayed together. Though I was flattered, and though we did have some very good memories, I realized that she was conveniently forgetting the bad times and what caused us to eventually break up. As the song says, "Mem'ries, may be beautiful and yet
What’s too painful to remember
We simply choose to forget
So it's the laughter
We will remember
Whenever we remember
The way we were"

Chicago – Just You 'N' Me Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a good song about how easy it is for the author to love his girl and enjoy life just by being with her. People are complex, so it's never quite this easy, but it's an inspirational song nonetheless. Though it's idealistic, the song does express that it can be valuable to keep things simple in a love relationship and focus on what's important (i.e. each other), rather than all of life's other distractions.

Bon Jovi – (You Want To) Make A Memory Lyrics 17 years ago
I love the sentiment of this song. Rather than just doing something that will soon be forgotten, he suggests taking a chance and creating a new memory. Of course, in this song, it's a bit more complicated than that, because they already have old memories from a past together, as well as new obligations to others.

Think of all the times that we act conservatively in order to do the right thing. This song deals with the tension between not wanting to rock the boat and the desire to rock it at the risk of sinking it. Bon Jovi suggests rocking it - well, of course, he's a rock star!

Cat Stevens – How Can I Tell You Lyrics 17 years ago
I was also turned on to this song by the diamond commercial. After seeing the commercial and doing some research, I was glad to find that Cat Stevens had done the song. I agree that I'd like to be able to get a full version of the song from Chan Marshall (a.k.a Cat Power), but the Cat Stevens version is great too.

The full version is different from the impression that the diamond commercial leaves, in which a guy just wants to do something special to express his feelings to his significant other. In the song, he loves someone but hasn't been able to convey that. I think the second verse is most powerful, in which he's always thinking of her no matter what he's doing or who he's with.

Dishwalla – Charlie Brown's Parents Lyrics 18 years ago
He's talking to someone who's not saying anything meaningful. Remember the "Peanuts" specials, whenever Charlie Brown's parents would talk, all you'd hear is something unintelligible (wah-wah-wah, or something like that).

Cake – Italian Leather Sofa Lyrics 18 years ago
The song reminds me of a cartoon I once saw that showed an average-looking man with a beautiful woman, and he's deep in thought. In the first frame, he's thinking "She only wants me for my money." In the next frame, he has a sly smile as he thinks, "Who cares?" The couple may be superficial, but they're both getting what they want, as evidenced by the action on the Italian leather sofa!

Lenny Kravitz – A Long And Sad Goodbye Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is reportedly about the death of Lenny Kravitz' father. Obviously, the Dad did some things that really hurt his family. It makes one think of how certain actions will impact the legacy we each leave behind.

Lenny Kravitz – Mr. Cab Driver Lyrics 18 years ago
Lenny Kravitz expresses the frustration of being mistreated simply because of the way he looks. I'm not a big fan of profanity in songs, but I think the F bomb is used very effectively here.

Jack Johnson – Sleep Through the Static Lyrics 18 years ago
Jack Johnson is sneaky. Hidden underneath a pleasant sound, one that you'd expect to hear while sitting around a campfire on a beach, are some very poignant, political lyrics.

The first part of the chorus is very sarcastic. U.S. is the most powerful country in the world, so we can do whatever we want, right? Although he's being sarcastic, there are a lot of people who believe that.

There is a desire by some of our (U.S.) leadership that we should not voice any dissent and just support the government with blind faith, and this is reflected in the lines, "Mind your manners wave your banners, What a wonderful world that this angle can see."

The song title seems to be a reference to ignoring what is going on in front of us. Similar to falling asleep with the TV on, the information is flowing to you but your mind is elsewhere.

Bee Gees – Words Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song, and it sounds heartfelt when they sing "It's only words, and words all I have, to take your heart away." But when you think about it, why are there only words? How about some actions? The words will have more meaning if they're backed by actions.

Prince – 1999 Lyrics 18 years ago
The statement, "life is just a party, and parties weren't meant to last," acknowledges that we're mortal and we should enjoy life during our limited time on earth.

Supertramp – Hide In Your Shell Lyrics 18 years ago
Great Supertramp song. It's a plea to someone who has been emotionally scarred to let love in. On one hand, you have someone who has been hurt and is "looking for someone to give an answer," yet cannot trust anyone to get close enough to give them that "answer". On the other hand, the song is written from a mostly idealistic point of view, with the statement "I as a boy believed the saying the cure for pain was love," though the boy indicates that he can also relate to her hiding in a shell. So they've both been hurt in the past, he perhaps to a lesser extent than she. He wants to move on by getting close to someone else, while she feels too vulnerable to let another person hurt her again.

Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show – Sylvia's Mother Lyrics 18 years ago
In this song, you feel the frustration of a guy who wants to have one last conversation with his old girlfriend but is stymied by Sylvia's mother. I imagine him standing at a pay phone, digging into his pockets for more coins, as he desperately tries to talk to his love before she leaves town. This is especially poignant near the end of the song, when the mother tells him "thank you for calling and, sir, won't you call back again," implying that Sylvia is nearby so the mom is pretending he's someone else.

It reminds us of a time when communications were much more difficult. For younger persons, many of whom have their own cellphones, this may be hard to relate to, but it was just a generation ago when trying to get in touch with someone was much more difficult. If a boy called his girlfriend, he often had to talk first to her parents, who sometimes served as a gatekeeper, preventing their daughter from talking to someone unless they approved of him.
