Firstly, I'd like to say that this is an amazing song... Something about its song that I've fallen in love with... Now for interpretation... "There's a tear in the fabric of your favorite dress And I'm sneaking glances Looking for the patterns in static They start to make sense The longer I'm at it" It begins with a woman in her favorite dress that has begun to tear... I feel the dress represents societal conventions and that the tear represents a "glimpse" of freedom. The speaker sounds perverted for sneaking glances, but it soon becomes clear that it is more than just physical lust... Instead of continuing to peak through the tear, an act which would be looked be considered disgusting by society's standards the speaker begins looking at the pattern on the dress, the pattern of societal conventions and realizes that society will not allow him to be with this woman Ivory lines lead Oh wha-ho, oh wha-ho These lines represent the sides of the tear of the fabric... They lead to more private areas of the body; the location of the tear doesn't matter, from any edge of the dress the deeper the tear is, the deeper he looks, the less appropriate it becomes by society's standards... He can't even bear to say where they lead since it would be taboo and simply says "oh wha-ho" Your heart is a river that flows from your chest Through every organ Your brain is the dam And I am the fish Who can't reach the core Here, once again, he is addressing the woman (not literally but in his mind), her heart also wants too be with him and this feeling runs through her blood through her entire body until it hits her brain, where a dam stops it. She realizes that its not practical or wise to fall for him and the flow of her desire is suppressed before the speaker can reach her "core"/"cord." Because her brain stops her from following her heart he can't be with her Oh, instincts are misleading You shouldn't think what you're feeling They don't tell you what You know you should want This stanza speaks for both the woman and the speaker. On one hand, it addresses the issue of their longing for each other from her point of view. She may want him with her heart but society tells her its not what she should want despite her instincts and she is bound to follow. On the other hand he is speaking to himself, telling himself that there's no point in longing for her since its not possible if he thinks about it practically; there is some social impediment keeping him from being with her. |
