i saw pinback in concert last week (great show by the way)...and they prefaced this song with comments about the bullshit in the bible, esp. regarding the "666" mark of the beast number. then, as the song was being sung, the videos on the wall behind them were of failed preachers, hypocrites, and many references to 666. |

As former minister who struggled for years to hold on to his faith and remain a soldier in God's "army," I think this song is about a clergyman who loses his faith in God, but feels like he must continue in his work because he has mouths to feed. He groans, because he goes at it alone. He sings "Alleluia" with fear in his heart. He is "working for the church while his family dies." But he feels like he must keep going to keep paying the bills and keep his family together. |
