Mat Kearney – Closer to Love Lyrics 14 years ago
I just heard the song on the radio -- it's still such an awesome song. Last year I was able to see Mat Kearney perform at a small show in Bloomington, Indiana. I was able to catch him outside for a few minutes and ask him about a few of his songs, and this song specifically. He said my assumptions that this song, like most of his songs, are Christian-inspired were dead-on. That a friend of his was going through a rough time, which led him to writing this song for her.

Mat's an awesome musician and knowing that his music aligns with his faith only makes me appreciate him and his work more.

Also, looking back at my original post, I came off kind of arrogantly, and I apologize. I remember being frustrated that no one else took the time to really interpret the lyrics the way I had.

Vertical Horizon – You're A God Lyrics 15 years ago
Why am I the first to suggest that this song isn't written to another person, but rather to God? Sorry to bust everyone's little "My boyfriend/girlfriend is a god/goddess" theory.

"I've got to be honest,
I think you know,
We're covered in lies and that's OK.
There's somewhere beyond this I know,"

Since the Garden of Eden man has had a sinful nature, and through the salvation of Christ we're given the chance to be somewhere beyond the brokenness of this sinful world.

"But I hope I can find the words to say,
'Never again, no'
'No, never again'"

Matt finds it hard not to sin, and in return he hopes he can find the desire not to.

"'Cause you're a god,
And I am not,
And I just thought
That you would know/go"

Simple enough. Matt's talking to God, so he's basically affirming that he's not divine like God is. Not that God doesn't know, but Matt's saying it more for himself.

"But I've been unable
To put you down.
I'm still learning things I ought to know by now."

He's either referring to the Bible or his own spirituality. As he's growing in his faith he's learning more about God and how to live life to glorify Him.

"It's under the table so
I need something more to show somehow"

He's talking about hiding his faith by referring to it as being "under the table," or "off the record" if you prefer it.

God Bless!

No one, yet, has really recognized what this song is REALLY about. This is obviously religiously-inspired. Everyone gets bad news at some point in their life, to make it through, some turn to God/Jesus to pull them closer to love.

Oh, it's your light; oh, it's your way [John 8:12]; [John 14:6]
(You) Pull me out of the dark, just to shoulder the weight [John 12:35]

This song is about relying on God/Jesus to bring you out of a crisis.

Cryin' in your room, prayin' “Lord come through.”

Cryin' out now, from so far away
You pull me closer to love, closer to love [1 John 4:7-21]

As far as the, "She said she didn’t believe 'it could happen to me,'" it's just Mat using a selfish response for the girl. Like most people, bad news comes out of the grey and they don't expect it to happen to themselves.

Now we've gotten rid of all the misunderstanding :)

God Bless

I may actually be wrong about the whole "lived a short time in France" part, but for the most part, he lost love. I read in an interview that he wrote this song about coming home.

What's the meaning behind your song 'Adelaide'?

actually it’s a very bitter song about my own lack of self discipline; for the longest time i was absolutely co-dependent on those i was in a relationship with. (hence lines like shouldn’t need anyone im just scared of being alone). if you notice in the cities promo shot i tried to “half-smile” so that people knew that the song was about me and not someone from the small town in australia. no one picked up on it.
i picked the name ‘adelaide’ because it sounded better than ‘brenda’ or ‘shenana’. even though jason tate hates this song, max from say anything said it was one of his favorite songs we have ever done, so i feel like it balances out.

I could be digging too deep into the lyrics. But Stephen Christian lived a short time in France. He fell in love and in the end, the relationship ended. In an interview, Stephen said this was his favorite song from New Surrender. So maybe I'm foolish to think this song is about that same girl and he's talking about Paris, but it seems to line up quite well.

"dear sir,
loves past is a conversation that feels like a twisting knife in my back when i talk about it, but for you i will enduldge. i should have been married by now, she was perfect *or so i thought. we met in paris france and after the most amazing night of my life (including but not limited to wine, strawberries, dancing on top of a building overlooking downtown paris, etc.) i was sure i was intoxicated with her. our relationship lasted for over a year and a half, most of it was the best times i have ever experienced in a relationship. we were naive which made love all the more a more applicable companion. her company was motivating and her intellect has yet to be matched in a long term relationship.
but now its over. time got the best of us and we ended on a bridge overlooking a highway going opposite directions. fitting. it was march 12, 2000 and ill never forget every word, every breath, every movement that took place... its as if time was in slow motion the entire evening.
bitterness and resentment were my new companions and i spent months recoiling from society. i was the summation of what you mentioned above on the aftermath of love.
but now. its been years and i still look for remnants of her in other girls. she has changed and i have changed. it would never be even if the stars aligned one last night. but i will never despise the time we spent together and i will never forget what it felt like to be in her arms on the eeifel tower in spring."

"You're lowered down the aisle"

Stepping down from the alter, possibly being lowered by the newly wed's husband.

"I want to stand up and speak my peace
And let your hollow pieces walk away."

In my perspective, he wants to confess his ongoing love to her and make her realize he's still cares. By letting her hollow pieces walk away, makes it appear like she's almost stuck between him and the new love. By hearing him say such things at such an event would probably crush her as well. It's almost like it's not just one-sided.

Wedding/Funeral seems to be the wedding of a past love (self-explanitory). Funeral is referring to a closure to their love, by letting her go (to be married to someone else). I suspect this because he says, "But you won't look at me, Not so much as smile." To me, she's still alive, at her wedding, and she's so caught up in the excitement of being at her wedding (walking down the aisle), that she's probably trying to avoid making eye contact with him.

This is definitely a heartfelt song. Something so passionate doesn't come from just anywhere.

Correct Lyrics:

Take me down to where you think I belong.
You can’t rescue me, you ain’t that strong.
You don’t know no better,
I’m not gonna tell you any better.
Can you turn this pale water to wine?
If you can do that, I think we’ll be fine.
But you can't raise a sinner.
And it’s not me, but honesty, that’s died.

Blurring lines between love and sin.
Can’t tell where you stop and where I begin.
Your body’s sending questions to answers
You can’t give, or can you give?

If you throw me a line, I’ll only drag you in,
This isn't New York City and the ice is thin.
Keep your eyes open up all night,
I’ll be gone by the moment, it strikes daylight.
Believe in fate and now you think their lies.
I never meant to hurt a soul alive.
I’m still searching for what you can't give,
The further I wander, the less I know what it is.

Blurring lines between love and sin.
Can’t tell where you stop and where I begin.
My body’s sending promises that I cannot keep.

Well we are blurring lines between love and sin.
Can’t where you stop and where I begin.
Your body’s sending questions to answers,
You can’t give, or can you give?

Blurring lines between love and sin.
Can’t tell where you stop and where I begin.
My body’s sending promises that I cannot keep.

Well we are blurring lines between love and sin.
Can’t tell where you stop and where I begin.
Your body’s sending questions to answers,
You can’t give or can you give?

Blurring lines between love and sin.
Can’t tell where you stop and where I begin.
My body’s sending promises that I cannot keep.

Well we are blurring lines between love and sin.
Can’t tell where you stop and where I begin.
Your body’s sending questions to answers,
You can’t give or can you give.

This is straight from the Anchor & Braille myspace profile. I just made it into a neat format. Also, I think some of the lyrics have changed a bit, but for the most part, this should clear up some of the errors flyrice817 posted.

Stephen's incredible though. I love all of his work. Intelligent, inspirational, and most importantly, passionate.

Anberlin – Time And Confusion Lyrics 18 years ago
"Live for today, we'll dream tomorrow" is a quote from James Dean. From my perspective of the song, it sounds like a song from Stephen to the rest of the band, or quite possibly his brother Paul. He says, "We fell on hard times, This isn't the ideal, Miles from home, Doing the best we can (Best that we can)"

In the same sense, he also says, "I hold it all when I hold you" So I can see the connection as this being a love-type relationship song.

The great thing about Stephen's lyrics are that they're so universal. Awesome song though. (;
