well first of all mathew bellamy who wrote this song is an out-spoken atheist, so it is highly unlikely that he is making any reference to spirits trying to save him in the verses unless it is satire. and the protagonist clearly says 'the end is all i can see', so he is not questioning his disbelief. in my mind the song has nothing to do with him realizing that his beliefs are wrong, but simply him realizing that his beliefs arent making his last days that pleasant, since a christian on his death bed would be believing that they are going to the afterlife, even if they really end up buried in the ground with no conciousness. |

i reckon that all the verses are about him thinking he can leave, but in the end he decides the world is too foreign for him so he returns to prison. |

i know that the song is really just about buddy holly and the plane crash, but to me its always struck me just as a fictional story about what would happen if music 'died' and nobody could play it anymore... |
