I was doing an English paper on "The Glass Menagerie" by Tennessee Williams when I noticed that he mentioned Guernica in the opening lines of the play. The main character Tom is providing an introduction to the play through a narration "I reverse it (time) back to that quaint period, the thirties, when the huge middle class of America was matriculating in a school for the blind. Their eyes had failed them, or they had failed their eyes, and so they were having their fingers pressed forcibly down on the fiery Braille alphabet of a dissolving economy. In Spain there was revolution. Here there was only shouting and confusion. In Spain there was Guernica. Here there were disturbances of labor..." Perhaps Dustin was making an allusion to The Glass Menagerie. The main character is romanticizing revolution but the general idea is that we are lacking in emotion, a theme that is prevalent in most of the songs by Thrice. |

| Of course its a allusion to Atlantis! The title is the "Lost Continent". The allusion just serves to support the idea that society is heading in the wrong direction, but everyone happily ignores the impending end. They sing to help them forget the pain and suffering in the world. | |

There were an estimated 25,000-35,000 killed. Dresden was packed with civilians and refuges when it was bombed. Dresden was just one of the cities we bombed in our aerial campaign designed to kill off Nazi German's industry as well as it's civilian base to recruit from. Dresden did not have a military garrison and it's industrial are was on the outskirts of the city, not the interior which was targeted in the bombing. I wonder why Dustin chose to mention Guernica in the song. Not to say that the city of Guernica wasn't devastated by the bombing(3/4ths of the city was destroyed 300 died) but compared to the estimated 100,000 that died in the firebombing of Tokyo or the 50,000 that died in Hamburg it seems odd that he would mention Guernica. |

And so I hid among the smallest things; The narrator (Fire) has hid himself so that we don't use him for war, he hides among atoms. You found me there and ferried me above. Humanity has discovered nuclear fission and shortly after has harnessed the power into a bomb that can be dropped from a plane. The flame deluge is waiting in the wings: Flood of flames (nuclear bomb) is mounted in the bomb bay, waiting to be dropped. The smallest thread holds back the second flood; This is a reference to the cold war in my mind. The tension between the US and Russia could have been broken very easily unleashing a nuclear holocaust and probably the end of the world as we know it. The biblical reference is an allusion, its not suppose to be some sort of allegory. |
