| Soul Coughing – Blame Lyrics

I take this song to be ironic. It's saying that, in truth, blame doesn't 'cure anything' even though you can apply it to anything ('broad latitude'). To blame is to become a victim and give up control, not be in charge of your own direction: "throw the rudder down."
And Mike Doughty does write poetry, go dig screenwriter's blues |

I say the unsingable name is "jane." That would make it "sweet jane" like the velvet underground song and "Plain Jane." Plus it fits the rhyme scheme. It's a mono-syballic word that you could say rings or chimes like a bell or like a guitar string. The third verse are all calamities, brilliantly thought up and poetic calamities, which gives us "calamity Jane" as well. I thought this song was amazing even before I realized it was a riddle. |

I disagree with the whole sex angle, because if he's in the middle of getting some, why would he 'need a mercy fuck?' If her "knees thrust in one direction" her legs are together. i think they are sitting together, possibly in a coffee shop (?), and she is turned away from him, making him feel that he is the 'less than' in the equation. That would make her the 1 in 5. He's being rejected, 'crowded OUT,' and is considering his 'luck' |
