Helmet – Milquetoast Lyrics 16 years ago
The quality of being a "Milquetoast" seems to spread from person to person, usually striking at different microcosmic reasons, making the condition harder to shake upon spread... that is, if such a thing goes "unrecognized."

I think that the first person here is speaking in constructive [for both / all involved] retaliation against another who has encouraged him to act in weakness and compliance in his everyday life. He realizes that doing so places him directly in the stomach acids of the metaphorical beast which considers his welfare as far as his palatability. Fucked up.

Mr. Bungle – My Ass Is On Fire Lyrics 17 years ago
Sounds to me as if the speaker is somewhat of a Frank Booth sort of character. I mean, clearly "Don't you fucking look at me" is there to lead the listener to such a conclusion, but it has not been mentioned as of yet. Go watch Blue Velvet. I'm disappointed in you.

And interesting that this song would be seen by someone as a stab / ridicule of metal music as a whole. Kudos.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum – The Donkey-Headed Adversary of Humanity Opens The Discussion Lyrics 17 years ago
Genres are stupid.

But for you dweebs, purists and enthusiasts for the inane, they are avant-garde rock. Rock against rock, as they [and sometimes the RIO bands] describe themselves.

Bah humbug. Moving right along.

Mr. Bungle – Sweet Charity Lyrics 18 years ago
It's strange, because the two bands couldn't be more different, and yet I found myself thinking exactly what dressed2depress said. Maybe not the whole evil radiohead / good mr. bungle thing, but I don't know.

I can't help but see a storyline in the California album... anyone feel me there?

Primus – Groundhog's Day Lyrics 18 years ago
Les's nickname is Snap, or Snappy... if I'm not mistaken. Perhaps a reference to his bass style? I'd be in orchestra or jazz combo warming up with Les licks or Trevor Dunn patterns, and the other cats would accuse me of damaging my bass by "snapping the strings." Insufferable white boy reed players.

But yeah man, this is my favorite Primus song of all time. There's no celebration of "underachievement" here, because Les, as we all strive to be, was completely fulfilled to play his unique style of music almost twenty years ago, before his "legacy" or whatever. Discipline is a means to an end [Robert Fripp], and I believe that realized creation is said end. It's a shame that many bands view creation to be the means to a vague and soul swallowing end - public and monetary success. Fame and fortune.

To most people, music isn't doomed, it's dead. And people in Les's position are simply archaeologists.

Saw Les and Secret Chiefs 3 last night by the way. Fuck yeah.

Mr. Bungle – Carry Stress in the Jaw Lyrics 18 years ago
Um... Yes, actually that is exactly what Patton sings. I for one have listened to this album on many occasions, and there is no discrepancy between the printed lyrics and those on the album.

But there is that little thing right when the speed picking ends and it's just drums and a distorted Patton for 3 counts, and then the palm muted staccato thrash section. But he probably just made a noise or something. Sounds amazing either way.

I'm going to see Secret Chiefs 3 open up for Les Claypool tonight by the way.

Oh yeah, and by the way...

Ablution = Ritual washing.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum – Ablutions Lyrics 18 years ago
At first it sounds like longing for the presence of a lover and / or caretaker, and when the male voice comes in, the tone shifts to sorrowful contempt, screaming for the second person to understand the insomnia and pain his or her absence causes. I think the conclusion ["Won't you leave for good?"] indicates that the ablution has finally taken affect, and the clutches on the narrator has been released. Perhaps the everpopular subject of sexual abuse either in the family or church, where religion is used as a catalyst as well as a sustainer for foul play?

"She folds her arms up nicely
lays them down upon the table
wipes her mouth off as she
tries to find another word for love."

Says it all.

Peeping Tom – Five Seconds (feat. Odd Nosdam) Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the song is about getting lured into the routine of sex as a paramount factor of one's life. "Five seconds to live" could be a reference to the length of orgasm. Also, since sex can be viewed [in a rather Freudian and therefore faulty manner] as something violent, the Stalingrad battle reference reinforces this. And, "Don't pull my nerve?" Hah. Perhaps the verse regarding the house burning down illustrates how many families "unexpectedly" happen due to sexual carelessness, and it is only a matter of time before the home crumbles. Sex for the sake of sex always does.

Remember that song "Epic?" Yeah. Patton's a smart one.

Peeping Tom – Don't Even Trip Lyrics 18 years ago
Upon first listen, I immediately thought, "Trey." And what many people forget is that the meanings of songs are usually more specific in the beginning. Or they may stay that way, and the artist himself or herself may alter the "meaning" for the general public. After all, the second person is "still [his] friend." What kind of friend throws another under the bus with a song, especially a tongue in cheek trip hop song?
