To me, its about a man who tries his best to be interesting. He's into "weird" stuff, he keeps a lot to himself and intrigues Sarah. When she's in his arms, I think it means she gets to know a side of him other people don't. I get the feeling he might be a bit depressed, but that adds to the appeal for her- she loves his imperfections. I really like this song. I think it's very pretty. |

Another idea...listening to the song altogether... I think maybe the love of his life is damaged, so she's driving away, leaving him. Every other woman is ugly to him. He thinks she is gone because he didn't make enough money. Really it's because of her own issues, and she's begging him not to miss her, but of course he can't. |

I absolutely adore this song. I love how every stanza introduces new imagery, and after each one, the song introduces something new in the music, to really drive it home. I'll go stanza by stanza in giving my interpretation. I can't gurantee i'll get ANYTHING "right"- if there is a right way to interpret art.... but maybe my ideas will strike more ideas! Okay... She's a jar With a heavy lid My pop quiz kid A sleepy kisser A pretty War With feelings hid She begs me not to miss her * Seems to describe someone who keeps their feelings and thoughts locked away, which I think is the main idea. The pretty war seems to imply she has some issues* She says forever To light a fuse We could use A hand full of wheel And a day off And a bruised road However you might feel Tonight is real *I think means that she feels like getting away for a little bit. The bruised road is interesting imagery, and seems to mirror the feelings of the people in the song. Also, I think he is trying to get her to deal with the reality of something...their relationship...or that night When I forget how to talk I sing Won't you please Bring that flash to shine And turn my eyes red Unless they close When you click And my face gets sick Stuck Like a question unposed *I believe this one refers to someone taking a photograph of someone else. And I believe the singer is bringing home the idea of needing to say/ask something, but being unable to. For some reason, this made me think of "wedding proposal", but the question could be anything difficult I think. Just climb aboard The tracks of a train's arm In my fragile family tree And watch me floating inches above The people under me * This one kind of threw me off. I don't have any idea what a train has to do with the people in his family. Maybe he feels that his family is too forceful, or bad in some way, and being "only inches above them, and being like them" makes him feel uncomfortable. Please beware the quiet front yard I warned you Before there were water skies I warned you not to drive Dry your eyes you poor devil * This is another odd one, that seems to stand alone, to me. Could water skies mean it is raining? That would be a good reason not to drive. If she's crying, it could mean there was an accident of some kind....or like the bruised road mentioned before, maybe driving is what she does when she is upset. In that case, I guess her pain worries him. Are there really ones like these The ones I dream Float like leaves And freeze to spread skeleton wings I passed through before I knew you * I think maybe he's talking about other women he has known or dreamed about. I think he's saying that they look beautiful but are deadly, or not as beautiful as they seem. I believe it's just because Daddy's payday is not enough Oh I believe it's all because Daddy's payday is not enough * Is he saying he wishes he could give her more material things so she might feel better? The last stanza is the same as the first, but presents one more line that seems pretty important "She Begs Me Not To Hit Her." So, maybe the reason she might be a bit dysfunctional is because of past abusive relationships. Hopefully I've hit on something...but I'm probably only scratching the surface. Hopefully somebody else knows! |

For me, this song just brings back an odd memory of my childhood. :/ I must have been about three or four. It was dinner time, and I was sitting at my little plastic table, about to eat some pasta. I started thinking about how my pasta may have once been something else. I might have thought it had once been a living thing, or maybe just a thing with feelings that did not want to die. I started crying into my bowl and asking the spaghetti to forgive me for the pain I had surely inflicted upon it...I tried to reason that I was very hungry, so that it should forgive me. :) Pasta doesn't taste as good when it is drenched in the sorrow of a four year old girl. So, that is my story of a time when I gave human quality to an unanimate object...kind of like the character in the song! |

| I love this song very much and I relate to it well, even though I am a girl and I have never been in love. Even though I have never "Fallin in love", I still have loved very much....people....friends...family. And sometimes these are people who would never give me the time of day....people who hurt me...and people I have hurt. A lot of times I have loved them to the point of obsession. I can't seem to help it. Now that I see no one outside of my small world in my room...I wonder what love will be like when I'm out in the world again. I worry. It may have been written while he was thinking of his friend the firefighter- but i find it hard to see that this song is actually about being a fire-fighter,,,,i think maybe the fire thing started the song and he built off that... i think this song is about a two brothers and one was adopted but everyone likes hime cuz he has a lot of money so even though he's mean, everyone hangs around him including his brother who doesnt really like him and would rather leave but doesnt. Scarecrow i think refers to the first son because noone really likes him or pays attention to him and fungus refers to the adopted son because he has "grown" on everyone like a fungus! At least thats what i think! :) |

OK!! I LOVE this song!! I think it is about a lady who is kinda sick....like mentally ill. She is in love with this guy who Used to love her but they couldnt be together because of maybe financial reasons and the fact that she is crazy.....but she can't really accept that so she keeps trying to sleep with him and get him to love her so she hurts herself for the attention and it works for a while because he DOES care for her.....but they cant be together. thats what i got so far... |
