| The Hold Steady – Rock Problems Lyrics

|
Craig Finn said on the BBC Radio 1 Punk Show with Mike Davies that this song was about the normal type of problems you get when you're in a rock band and realising they don't matter because hey, you're in a rock band and get to travel the world playing shows. |

Craig Finn said on the BBC Radio 1 Punk Show with Mike Davies that this song was about the rumours that you hear about rock stars, specifically before the internet with stars like Stevie Nix and Ozzy Osbourne.
I'm not quite sure it came out quite like that. |

Narrator and his friends graduate from high school. They reminisce about the good times, the bad times, and then they drive off to get wasted or something.
I'm done here. |

Seeing how they share some of the same lyrics, I'm gonna say this is about the breakup Beckett had with the girl in "After The Last Midtown Show". The relationship was still going well sexually, but emotionally was just dead, so old Will lost the only girl he ever loved.
Also she was older than him, apparently. |

The comments on here already explain a lot of it. Just about a great night Beckett had with an ex, the only girl he loved, the night/morning after the last Midtown show.
*conveniently ignores the high school theme for this song as beckett would have already graduated when midtown broke up in 2004. it still fits the being young theme though* |

This is where I get a little fuzzy on the whole thing. I think it's about a girl who hasn't ever got drunk or had sex before and is maybe considering it, and the narrator is saying "it could be a mistake, but it's the kind everyone needs to make to really learn about life and grow up, so go for it". |

This is totally just about being bullied in high school for being different or something. Crowded room could refer to the hallways and such. |

This one isn't as immediately obvious as some of the rest, but I guess I think it's just another story of young love gone wrong, perhaps the breakup that really caused you to grow up more emotionally, which is what the "five years disappeared that night" bit is all about. |

I originally thought this song was about losing your virginity with someone who you thought you were just friends with...like you just sort of ended up in their room, and it happened, and you don't really know how. Reading into it a bit more it's just about a crush who doesn't feel the same way, and he caught her with someone else after he treated her so well and such.
This song doesn't really do much for me, despite being the one I relate the most to. |

Just about the narrator character having a girlfriend he loves who doesn't seem to care about him, or he really likes her and she's kinda leading him on to make him think she feels the same way, but does that with a ton of other guys. |

Narrator from "Summer Hair = Forever Young" gets over his summer love by sleeping with a girl in his photography class or something, who already has a boyfriend. I don't actually think the album has a plot so much as just every song being about typical high school stuff so ignore the whole narrator thing. I guess this song's plot is pretty obvious. Dianne and sleepwithgiants pretty much have this one down though. |

I think this song's about your first young love, and how it eventually ends. Definitely more than a hint of it being a summer love, too. I don't see the "forever young" thing about growing older so much as him just wanting that summer to last forever. It's a tragically beautiful song, in its way. |

Well, I've just done an interpretation for "One More Weekend", so now I'm gonna do the rest in order.
Sticking with the "concept album about high school" theme which will go through all of these, I think it's about the first major crush you have as a teenager. I guess that doesn't really explain the chorus, though, unless he just doesn't understand his feelings. Meh. It's a fun, catchy song, anyways. |

It's definitely about growing up, moving on, leaving home, etc. The album is pretty much a concept album about high school anyway, so "Paper Chase" is the graduation, and this song is I guess growing up after that, going to college maybe with the IDs and such. It's one of the best songs about that sort of thing ever written, IMO, and the "We're half alone..." bit is just perfect (even down to the music/key change, too). |
