| The Irish Brigade is largely considered one of the hardest fighting units of the Civil War. Even with enormous attrition rates due to casualities, they fought in almost every major battle in the Eastern theatre of the war. At Fredericksburg, they were one of the few Union to nearly breach the infamous wall at Maryes Height, despite that after the battle amny of their dead and wounded were found stacked three or four deep in their, a chilling testament to their bravery. Not to mention, this all occurred at a time when those of Irish descent were often scorned and mistreated by the American populace. In reality, today many people wouldn't even consider serving their nation after something similar the treatment many of the Irish received. | |

Well, to be correct, Grapes of Wrath is a work by John Steinbeck, not Twain.It describes the lives of the white emigrants from the Midwest during the Dust Bowl period of the 1920s/30s, and is considered an American classic in literature. '83 doesnt have any particular year connotation.However, one might interpret the line as an American farmer speaking to his son about how their way of life- farming food on individual farm lots with crop diversity and a local market system for a farmer to sell at his own prices. Today's version of modern farming, with few exceptions, is dominated by industrial efforts based on large scale machinery and monoculture crops, in which the farmer is constantly in debt in order to pay off the loaning corporations for the equipment they help provide. Remember biofuels and monoculture is not an American entity alone...it is happening globally. Palm oil in Indonesia, soybeans in Brazil, rice in India and China, coffee in South America.....monoculture has taken firm root worldwide. That being said, "destitute and free" may represent the future of America if we fail to recognize our errings....broke from resource wars, our soils eroded from our foolish ways of production, but still touting our freedom.... |

Granted the chances of such violence occurring the the US and other industrialized Western nations are slim, but there is not doubt there are totalitarian governments in existence. If you knew anything about the Iraq conflict.....you would know its not just about religion. Our forces were and still are mostly caught up in a multi-level civil war within Iraq. They just arent killing each other over religion, as you so mistakenly out forth. While religion may play a large role in the conflicts, i.e. Sunnis vs. Shiites and so forth, this is a conflict for POWER and influence. They may hate the other Muslim sect, but they also fight amongst other militants of the same camp as they are, in seeking power and local authority. |

| Great AIC song. The tune in the beginning is Taps. It was devised as a evening "at rest" call for the armed forces during the civil war and is know best known for being played at funerals. With that in mind, I think this is really about the band dissolving. The use of a funeral/remembrance intro song to me speaks that the band is over; "look myself straight in the eye and stay, its over now" is the idea of convincing themselves that this great thing, their success and all, is coming to an end. Its basically saying all things must come to an end and there will always be new beginnings. | |

It comes from hale, which is the term used for all whites.You could be a tourist or someone who lived in the islands all your life, but your still a hale. You could be a guys brother in law, but you'd still be a hale. But haole is worst. Its basically calling someone a "fucking whitey". You could be one of the best surfers in the world, but a local will always be better than a haole. In Hawaii, the natives own the native beaches. Its that simple. Da Hui is the "code" the fucked natives go by. A white boy can't surf on native beach, park in the native lots, or in any way challenge a native. No matter what your friends and buds will call you, a white person will always be a haole in Hawaii. You can never completely fit in, which the idea behind "the North Shore society". | |

| German U boat warfare in WWII. The Germans almost defeated the Allies early in the war with their sub force. They nearly destroyed enough shipments of arms and food from the West to England to stop the war and force the British to surrender altogether. "Run silent, run deep" was a command given to sub crews when in enemy territory. Running deep and with the minimal amount of noise meant a less noticeable sonar blip on any enemy ships nearby. | |

WWII and the Battle of Britain. That's this song. ME 109 refers to the Meessersmicht BF 109E series, the choice of aircraft for most of the German aces, though the Flocke Wluff 190 and several other German aircraft were much faster and beter handlers than 109s. That's not to say it outperformed the Spitfire, which was a more stable and reliable plane with more firepower and a better dive and roll capability. But I won't go on a warplane rant here... Great song and a nice tribute to the RAF and everything they did for not just Britain but the world at large. For nearly 3 years, these guys kept the Germans at bay over England and prevented Hitler from following through with the invasion of England, which could have very well succeeded and defeated the Allies in Europe. |

Yup. Crimean War era song. Trooper was the original named given by the Brits to their lightly armed and fast moving horse horsemen. The Brits were involved in the Crimea, just as they were in a ton of spots for colonization at this time. In this case, a British "light calvary" brigade (armed only with sabers and small muskets) charged entrenched and reinforced cannon and rifle pits of the Russians. Though it gave the British calvary a further reputation for discipline and courage under fire, it was a suicide slaughter. The British drove the Russians out of their positions but only at a cost of close to 25% of the total force in dead and wounded. Remember, at that time this would have been astounding. The American Civil War hadn't started yet, and the largest battle in recent European history at the time was Waterloo, which was pitiful compare to what the world would see within 10 years of the Crimean affairs. In any case, a kick ass Maiden song and one of my all time favorites. |

Paschendale... probably the most horrific battle of WWI. You see, the Somme was more deadly. But the Somme wasn't drawn out like this battle. Paschendale is in Flanders, In Belgium. By the time of the third battle written about here, two large scale battles had already occurred in the area. So there were already shell holes and blown up trenches in many areas. At the beginning of the battle, casualities were suprisingly light, @ least for WWI standards. Then it poured for weeks and weeks on end. Entire trenches flooded. The ground around Flanders is clay, so water rolled right off it into shell holes. Wounded men often slipped into shell holes for shelter only to find then filled to the brim with water in which they would drown to death. All progress stopped. The opposing armies were forced into charges across rain soaked shell holes, many times in which soldiers on both sides had to cross friggin' boards across gigantic shell craters. Mud and water everywhere, and open assaults in daylight upon heavily entrenched machine gun and artillery positions. To make things worse, by this time gas was standard in the trench warfare arsenal. Each side used gas. And when gas hit the water filled trenches, sometimes it would last for close to a day, and would poison the water sources around it. Standing water meant disease was rampant. This battle was the definition of hell on earth. All in all, a great Maiden song. A memorial to one of the darkest periods and events of all human history. Dickinson is a genius for bringing a topic like this to metal, and it will continue to be one of the best anti-war and memorial songs ever written. |

That's why Pantera is often called the revival of real heavy metal. When Cowboys came out, a truly stunning and popular metal album hadn't been seen in a long while. The trends leant towards grunge, and later sugar pop, and all the crap we saw in the mid 90s with the rebirth of sugar pop. Think about it; Nirvana, Britney Spears, all that crap, was the trend by the time Phil was writing this song. So I think hes really talking about how everybody was saying metal was "dead and gone" with the new trend of music; and when that all died, this was Phil's response to it all. | |

The basic message is that someone may point the finger at you and do everything in their power to disgrace you, but they always lose in the end. Its about not stooping down to fight back; letting them "open fire" on you and ignoring their real message. The criticized may be disgraced temporarily but it is really the pursuer of malice who falls into a "sea of sorrow". Layne got shit for his drug habits, and he may indeed be pointing out that he won't stoop to fighting the hypocrites who spend all their efforts to detroy him. | |

| I personally think this song could go either way. It could be about draft-dodging... or it could be about just getting out and goin. I personally think its the latter. Just gettin' out and findin' somewhere away from the crowds and crap of city life. Its hard to believe Fogerty was from LA, and the rest of the boys from SF. For me, this song is one of the best rock songs out there, and I don't think Syknard or any of the later southern boys would have done half as well if it hadn't been for CCR. | |

The Dark Ages is the time where the oppression of the common man reached an all time low. People lived in fear of violent death, tryannical warlords, rampant disease, and starved to death on a regular basis. All the grandeur and advances reached in the Roman Empire, though the average citizen never was that important in the whole scheme of Rome, had fallen. If you weren't a lord, king, knight, or somebody of royalty or wealthy bloodlines, chances were that you wouldn't make it past 40, if you were lucky. And superstition reigned supreme because the mass public was ignorant. Almost nobody but priests and royal officials could read or write. The Church held THE monopoly on God, and many of the priests lived corrupted lives of extravagance and wealth off the money they gained from the public. Basically, for about 900 years or so, the world in general was ignorant, knowing nothing of their ability to advance as a society. To compare the intellectual sense of a dark age with today is reasonable. Wars are breaking out across the world, and people don't care. The government in America has become and more centralized, taking more control over its citizens (i.e. the Patriot Act), and still nobody speaks out. I think what Graffin really points out that so much of the public is disappointed with the govt. but nobody speaks their opinions, hence "susurrations". Instead, the average American is more concerned about "living right" in society and not questioning the system. We care more about getting our new car than what we could be doing to help better the world. We are led to believe everything is fine in our nation, even though most of us know it isn't, a "pall on truth and reason". We don't question what society tells us to be anymore, and as a result we don't question our leaders. Eventually, all advances in the society will stop and we'll go backwards from what we are currently. In a sense, when society controls our worlds, a "new dark age" will be ushered in as mankind gradually stops advancing and we start destroying each other again, like what happened in The Dark Ages. |

Yeah, it ain't metal. But oh well. If you want metal, just don't listen to this song. Put on something else. I expected a metal album and.. it wasn't. Big deal. Still love the guys. I love the brass section in this song. Something new and very different for Ax7. I don't listen or know The Used well enough to say it sounds like one of their songs. Does sound a bit like the MCR stuff you hear around quite a bit now. Especially the choir and brass. But very original and awesome. Plus, the song is completely demented and bone chilling all the way to the last note. Great stuff. |

I love these guys. Started w/ COE and went backwards. I think the change is awesome. No band can stay the same. This album has a ton of great musical experimentation. You can't stay what you were in your last albums. But the combination of different instruments is really most noticeable in this release than any other, though it really started back with STST. Especially the use of piano and horn sections throughout the album. The lyrics are the weakest part for me. There are just styles he cannot sing well. Personally, I think the album would have been fine if he sang in his voice off COE. Lots of calm, soft lyrics just doesn't become of him. Like Axel Rose. Needs something raspy to make the song sound good. But I love the release, all the same. To me, this song could be about rape. But it appeals more to the feelings one gets after a hard break up. The idea of going crazy and losing control is what I associate with a tough relationship. Almost as if he attacking an ex mentally. I just don't think the meanings are completely physical. Perhaps her seeing the ugly side of his nature when he flips and turns on her. Who knows? Maybe is really is about rape. |
