Sufjan Stevens – All for Myself Lyrics 14 years ago
This is one of Sufjan Steven's most homoerotic songs. I think it has undertones of talking about keeping a condition of yours, a feeling, a truth "All to Myself" but also of having a man's body "All to Myself".

To bear it down to be in flight
(When having the flight-like feeling of flying through yourself and each other and everything when having great pleasure you're also bearing your body down on a bed, or something as you take it.)
It wasn't about me just a stone in my shoe
(This itch to get off is just something bugging me that I must take care of)
Then worries came to perch on us
(Sex is the best way to forget your worries)
Impatience and a painted bust
(Anxious to orgasm, a painted bust is a metaphor to me of making the most out of (painting) something partial [a bust is part of a body but not the full thing] such as masturbating to mitigate the impatience and make the most out of what you've got when alone, one person, half a complete, like a bust.)
I kept you close to me, close to my ear
(When in missionary position it's easy and lovely to keep the other close and you can rest your head or keep your head right near their mouth and hear their noises)

We set it out with folded shirts with hairy chests and well rehearsed
(They folded their shirts after taking them off when undressing and he and his male partner both have hairy chests and are well practiced at sexing)
I want it all, I want it all for myself
I'll set it right between your eyes, your shoulder blades, your runnning knife
(THOSE ARE ALL body parts emphasized when having anal sex: shoulder blades the catcher's (bottom) penis running itself across a sheet like a running knife.)
I want it all, I want it all for myself

Improving all the time
Improving as I kiss the hem
(The more sex, the better he is, the more he knows, the more he can do)
I promise I won't be trouble at all
For I'm okay, I'm in the red
Impressions of the unmade bed
(Sounds like he's saying he's clean of STDs or he has his feelings/desire under control)
You cradled close to me, close to my ear

We set out once forgot our shirts with hairy chests and well rehearsed
(They got ahead of themselves, stopped being so safe and clean, maybe unprotected sex, maybe sex on a new level sharing a new intimacy)
I want it all, I want it all for myself
Out in the Earth, I smell of you
(Still smells like his sex partner in waking life after their sex)
Of bathing boy, amazing you
(The partner is able to wash his scent off, but Sufjan still smells of him and it reminds him of what he wants)
I want it all, I want it all for myself

The White Stripes – Icky Thump Lyrics 15 years ago
I like your interpretation.
Women and foreigners are under-appreciated.

I think "You can't be a pimp and a prostitute too" is about how we exploit illegal foreigners who come here by having them work for less pay than Americans have the right to under law (minimum wage), (illegally) saving employers money and we bitch about illegal immigrants' presence at the same time. You can't pimp someone out (use them for your monetary gain like an underpaid worker) and hook at the same time (play another role other than employer, someone who sells an idea contradictory to their actions).

Micachu – Calculator Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is totally a subtle comment about technology's role in the future. Social networking sites, IP addresses, ATMs, other public machines and cell phones are all ways by which surveillance facilitators can keep dibs on anyone that buys into these things, which is everyone. We'll be so reliant on technology in the future (the calculator metaphor) and controlled by the people who make it that we won't know what to make of our situation and won't have anyway out of it because we'll be dependent on everything all around us and everything all around us will be the problem and will be controlling us.

"Walk into the future
You're controlled by your computer
But I think I'm going to sit this one out
Yes you might wish you were no longer about"

"They don't care who knows you

And they know when you will be leaving your house
And they also know the reason why you're out"

So grab your calculator
You'll be needing that sooner or later
'Cause I don't think I can work this one out
Yes I think I'm going to sit this one out"

Mica's saying we're making things really complicated and an end to the growing complications and monopoly of our creations will leave us weaker, more disabled and stuck in the same pattern of unsustainable dependence on all the same things for everything.

Animal Collective – Moo Rah Rah Rain Lyrics 16 years ago
Desperation and inability seem to be themes in this song.
The song has a remarkable feeling and sound.
Perhaps it's about the inevitability of being contained by the nature that surrounds us and that we are. Our dependency on nature and simple resources and necessities given by the earth is inescapable. We can make all kinds of things, we can create capital, we can create cures and invent new things and develop new technologies but the things we develop in our world don't matter if they can't be sustained and we can't be sustained by the planet. Our world is not outside of the planet.
It might have nothing to do with a statement or expression so big or with connotations so immense. It could absolutely be about feeling. About ability and freedom;
" We've been beaten, we're dying, let us congregate
I've never seen rain, my spittle cannot fly
Dad can't keep taking care of business, taking care of business..."

"my spittle cannot fly"
There is not enough moisture in the surrounding atmosphere to allow the production of saliva...that is a metaphor for extreme lack of feeling free or able, oppression by one's surroundings. It could also be a social-economic context. Whether in an emotional or personal reality context or a more societal, planetary context or even a socioeconomic context (I'm rather doubting the last one), it's about being utterly bound.

Modest Mouse – Heart Cooks Brain Lyrics 16 years ago
The lyrics "I'm on the road to god don't know
My brain's the burger and my heart's the charcoal" were originally in their song "Lounge (Closing Time) off their first album This is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About". Modest Mouse does that--recycles lyrics. They've used "I don't know what I've been told you never die you never grow old" three times. It's become one of their coined lyrical phrases. They've played with it in song lyrics on full-length albums, live and in EPs.

The meaning of this song is pretty clear.

Regina Spektor – Eet Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this songs lyrics are heinously obvious and lack much depth, if they have any. It's a song about losing something which was easy and let you escape.

I hate her new songs. They're shit. The lyrics are not Regina. And the pop-drum beat in Laughing With makes me want to commit suicide, that's not what Regina's about. It's really lame that she's compromised her incredible individualistic style with this new album. I miss her Back of a Truck and Happy Hooker days.

I love all the old songs that she included studio-recorded and augmented on this album. That is, I love them as they were originally recorded live. I don't like the new versions though. She's just killing everything i love about her with this album. Kinda makes me want to die inside! I miss Regina. Fuck. The second half of Dance Anthem of the 80s as recorded for this album is all right... that's as optimistic as I can get about this album. The videos are retarded, too.

Pink Floyd – Us and Them Lyrics 17 years ago
Black and blue
and who knows which is which and who is who
up and down
and in the end it's only round and round and round

This song is about social class and how we constantly get up by putting others down. The color black isn't that far from the color blue. "and who knows which is which and who is who" --he's singing about how we're all people and really not very different from eachother and that money and our ranks in society have too much control over our lives and it shouldn't be so confusing when it's simple that we are all people, all trying to live. The picture of an us and a them and that idea in our world is what is keeping us from progessing as a people and is the leading cause of what is wrong with our world. Mmmm, i love pink floyd.

Modest Mouse – Life Like Weeds Lyrics 17 years ago
"In this life like weeds, you're the dirt I’ll breath"
It should be "breathe"* not breath.

Life is like weeds and in places with weeds there are things that are more cared for and stable, not something that could just be pulled up carelessly. Like stabilizing people, rocks.

All this talking all the time and the air fills up, up, up
Until there's nothing left to breathe -- There's too much carbon dioxide spewed from talking mouths and weeds (plants) breathe carbon dioxide but people need oxygen to consume. It's about life invading and living instead of us.

And in the places you go, you'll see the place where you're from
And in the faces you meet, you'll see the place where you'll die
And on the day that you die, you'll see the people you’d met
And in the faces you see, you'll see just who you've been --These lines are about how we all are born and die and inbetween see faces and places and grow, all of us do. It's summing up the speed of life and how we travel and learn, all of us do, and all are like eachother at some point but don't notice while we're in the middle of it all. We're all part of eachother but can't see it while we're living and seeing places and faces and growing and learning.

Modest Mouse – A Different City Lyrics 17 years ago
It's about living a life different from what has been around you for so long. It's about figuring things out on your own and only seeing carpets and tv screens and decks and people that interrupt your bland but private reality and don't really say anything and mean even less than anything they invaded that you've made your own. It's about watching the world from a lonley, new place and time being completley unapparent as you gain a new perspective on everything around you.

The song is from the perspective of god. I think it's saying god is defined and made up from our feelings and if he we real he would be controlled by his emotions like people, he'd be just as weak and pitiful as us. The song is about god pitying us, just not wanting us to be alone even if we don't understand what being not alone means, because he's our creation not, we're not his, and we made him so not to feel alone.

Regina Spektor – Soho Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is lonley. It's about feeling lost from humanity, only connected through the places we all walk, the cigarettes we all desperately suck, the things we all lose and never find. We only find banana peels and orange rinds from strangers on streets, everything meaningful is used up like nicotine; dissapears and we're desperate to find something more. It's about how desolate life seems when you're alone and all you have to remind yourself that others live on the empty streets you walk on late at night, and are lost as you are, just at different times, taking different steps, are the cigarette butts you all dispose of and the unedible parts of what feed our lives. --Like the leftovers of human existence, and all we have left to see and think of when everything is desolate.
The title has a lot of significance and fits the song perfectly. She talks about in the song walking streets and Soho is a southwestern district in Manhattan that she could be referring to, considering she's a New Yorker. Soho is also a district in London, where the streets are paved with cigarette butts just the same, giving the song underlying messages of the universality of the lost condition of humanity. Also, Soho is a word used in calling from a distant place. The feeling of the song protrays feeling a distance from the rest of civilization, only connected through the lost feeling shared, but only noticed when you're around and walking on the ground you all walk on, looking at what's left. Otherwise the lostness goes unacknowledged, like it can't be heard from the distant we all are at from one another.

"it's surprising how little things we know
I was walking through my mindscape
and I didn't find a thing
it's surprising how little things we know
I was walking through my mind's streets
red light stop and green light go
and I didn't get run over"
A lot of the song especially where she says "it's surprising..." gives the vibe of curiosity and learning. As we're always feeling and experiencing in our lives, especially when we're alone and there's nothing left to do but learn and wonder. She uses a similie for the empty streets she walks on and the emptiness of her mind; the vaccant, leftover and meaning-searching streets of the city, the lost, vaccant, thoughtless pathways in her mind.

I love the piano in this song and the lyrics say so much to me. It touches me so personally in so many ways. I could listen to the words she sings about the unifying desperation and desire for meaning the world feels, together, but so solitarily at the same time, over and over again.

Barenaked Ladies – Tonight Is The Night I Fell Asleep At The Wheel Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song.

I think this song is about some one in a relationship in which they feel disconnected from, or have feelings that are unressolved and unsaid. The person thinks everytime they're driving home to be with their significant other about those feelings, and has thought of the circumstance where they are going home to them and plan on telling them finally when they get home about those feelings then they fall asleep at the wheel. At the beginning of the song "you're the last thing on my mind" is signifying the person not putting their significant other emotionally on a level of high priority. At the end of the song it comes full circle playing out the scenario for real. Expressing if he were to die, falling asleep at the wheel on the way home to his partner, even if he doesnt have feelings for them the way he should, they would be the last thing on his mind before he died because those feelings and their relationship would still be unresolved. The protaginist in this song expresses the fear of dying with this heavy weight of the person and what is unressolved on his mind.

I also think the death from the crash resulting from falling asleep while driving symbolizes being rid of the relationship. "In all the confusion, there's something serene
I'm just a posthumous part of the scene.
Now I'm floating above looking in
As the radio blares and wheels spin
I can see my face slump with a grin"
As if falling asleep at the wheel is a conscious (excuse the pun) act, signifying giving up on the relationship, emotionally closing down; falling asleep at the wheel on the way home to his love.

Band of Horses – Detlef Schrempf Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the line 'eyes can't look at your any other way' is, in line with what jaredwbowman said, is not a love line. It's about only being able to see compassion for some one, looking at some one and only being able to see them as people like you, only seeing love and humanity.
Seattle (Schrempf's town)plays into it in this stanza:
The town is gonna talk, but these people do not
See things through to the very minimal
But what's it gonna cost to be gone?
If we see you like I hoped we never would

Regina Spektor – Carbon Monoxide Lyrics 17 years ago
Usually the interpretations of her songs on this site are reasonable, but you guys are all wrong. I only saw one person that got it close to right.
Watching Survival Guide to Soviet Kitsch definetley helps clear up the meaning of this song. It has NOTHING to do with suicide.

This song is about the dangerous toxic substance that is love. It's about how intoxicating love is and how it leaves you in a hazy state that isn't always healthy. Love is like an odorless, tasteless, colorless (invisible), silent gas, like carbon monoxide. The symptoms of low-levels of carbon monoxide exposure include: dizziness, disorientation, and fatigue. These are the feelings that may be experienced when you're falling in love and are nervous and butterflies are in the stomach, they're also the sensations you may feel before passing out or dying from too much carbon monoxide exposure. Carbon Monoxide and love may sneak into your existence without you realizing it and it they're both dangerous. You can die from carbon monoxide before even realizing you've been exposed to it. --You can fall in love without even realizing love was applicable. But once you're under it's influence, you don't care because you're not conscious, you don't feel, you're under. You're passed out or dead from the toxcity.

Her socks in this song are used as a metaphor for the circumstances surrounding her new budding relationship and her readiness for it (the boy she's walking home). She's finally got her socks on right, she's finally a big girl who can do it herself, opposed to her daddy helping her ("come on, daddy"). The "i'm so cool, i'm so cool" and "we're so cool, we're so cool" parts of this song represent the euphoric feeling and appearance, the feeling of being above others and anything else, that is obtained when you're in love or when you're on a drug. Also, it's as if they're gloating their ability to love without the use of masks, their ability to breathe in toxin freely. It makes them so cool, so cool.

"Soon we'll go to sleep" is not referring to SUICIDE, but to passing out together from the carbon monoxide; their love. Sleep is used to represent the dreamlike state of haze and simplicity you fall under when you are in hopeless love. Being dead is referring to having absolutley no worries, not living a life like everyone else, but being no long on the conscious level of everyone else because you were exposed to carbon monoxide (a love no one else can feel as you and the other person does).

"They’ll just say we’re living our whole life in bed
And we’ll be in bed but we’ll be oh so very much
Dead-a, dead-a, dead-a, dead-a, dead-a
Dead-a, dead-a, dead-a, dead-a, dead-a
Dead-a, D-dead"
This part of the song deeply speaks to me. She's referring to people judging their love, not understanding the intoxicating spell they're under. To the rest of the world, who doesn't understand their love, they see them as wasting their lives, as two people who may as well be dead. Also, when you're dead you've lost your senses. The carbon monoxide (their love) has made them senseless (you can't touch gas and carbon monoxide is a tasteless, invisible, odorless, soundless gas) and their love is all that composes their existence, therefore they are senseless. In more than one definition of the word. People think they're just wasting away together but they're so far in love that they're the equivalent of dead that carbon monoxide creates. They're dead together; they're without hesitation (without gas maks) absolutley buried in their love.

Carbon monoxide was an amazingly clever and well-thought out choice of toxins Regina chose to symbolize love and goes perfectly with this song. Carbon monoxide burns a violet flame when ignited. Violet is the color of purpose (look it up), and love gives the most significant purpose in a person's life. It is also the color of imagination and inspiration, which should always present in love. Violet is a shade of purple which is the color of good judgment (which you don't always have when falling in love; they're not wearing gas masks). It is the color of people seeking spiritual fulfillment (within eachother). It is said if you surround yourself with purple you will have peace of mind (carbon monoxide being a gas, surrounds you. peace of mind = being dead). Purple has been used to symbolize magic and mystery (love is magical and mysterious), as well as royalty ("we're so cool, we're so cool, we're so cool") Being the combination of red and blue, the warmest and coolest colors, purple is believed to be the ideal color (the absolute ideal state to live in is surrounded by carbon monoxide [love], love is ideal).

The part of this song
'Maybe you should kiss some one nice or lick a rock
or both'
has been stuck in my head lately. So i googled 'lick a rock' and i found on Urban Dictionary that it's a term for getting high off of crystal. Do you think Regina's making a drug reference here??
For the rest of the song-- it's about simplicity and being one with the earth and the world around you and taking time to feel and live in it. It's clear that it's about taking time to 'make your wife moan' and watch the everlasting world come and go. Pretty simple song really, i love it. Less news, work and coffee, more kisses, barefeet, getting to know people who are just like you and walking opossed to running through the rain, trying to get through it as fast as possible. The rain at the beginning of the song is like a metaphor for the downpour of life and how it's important to not rush through without ever pondering why the rain comes down.

i love this song.
i think regina's making a strong statement in this song. she's saying what the light-ness (religion) calls 'sin' isn't all bad and that no one can live up to their harsh expectations, not even biblical characters like mary and joseph.
By this part:
'dark-ness is less frightening than the
light-ness is less frightening than the dark' i think she's saying there's a difference between being evil (the dark-ness) and being some one who sins and doesn't follow the light-ness (religion). and that the light can be really more scary than the dark; religion can be turned into something much darker than sin.

Regina Spektor – Man of a Thousand Faces Lyrics 18 years ago
Lozeli: Actually, split-personality disorder and schizophrenia are two entirely different disorders. It's a common misconception that the symptoms of schizophrenia include multiple personalities.

I think this song is about a man that feels he has to be something different for everyone he knows, he's never himself and wears a thousand faces, He's lost because he doesn't know who he really is because he's always being what other people want him to be. He feels everyone is a stranger, even the moon. Everyone is kept at a distance and he feels lost and alone because of it. I think kaysntees is right, the small lump of sugar is a drug reference,
The second and fourth stanzas sound like they have something to do with obsesive compulsive disorder, self-harm and thoughts about going to heaven.
I'm not sure the exact intent of this song, but i think we've put a lot of pieces together. I'm not sure Regina even knows the exact intent of every word in this song, that's what makes it absolutley lovely though. It just makes so much sense and there's so much feeling without it having to make complete sense or be at all clear.

Regina Spektor – Back of a Truck Lyrics 18 years ago
{This song is one of my ultimate FAVORITES. It's so trippy.}
The main themes i can get out of this song are: Immigrants, New York, and corporate America.
But really, i think this song is about immigration to NY (regina went from Russia to NY). The culture shock of corporate-america, vendors selling things, all things, from the back of their cars. Maybe her first day in NY she saw a lot of vendors in backs of trucks or something.
"She lifted the monument in her monumental arms
She was the mother superior with the carry-on luggage charms" -this is definitely about flying to NY and seeing the statue of liberty.

But there are definetely deeper levels about fictional characters like the overweight girl who ate hot dogs (she had eaten her dog and was back for more), with the demi god gym teacher and geraniums who thought they were alien pods... which is what throws me off. But i think she was on something when she wrote this song, so the parts that don't fit in like that are some manufestation of regina's imagination. I read in an interview that a lot of her songs (Mary-ann, Sailor Song, Poor Little Rich Boy) are about fictional characters she makes up and sings about. I think this song def. is partly about characters of her imagination.
"Now Miss Lucy had a sweatshop where the immigrants worked
Problem was they all turned to pumpkins at the twelve o'clock stroke"
Turning to pumpkins = getting caught as illegal in this country and getting shipped back, like cinderella turning back to what she was at 12, her horses turning to pumpkins.
Alien pods = places for illegal aliens to dwell/live.
There's such an intense theme about New York in it because she was hit with such a new environment; it was culture shock. And she realized how consumer-driven the streets of NY are, and how everything can be sold, and that a lot of people define themselves by what they buy, even if what they're buying is ridiculous. Everything can be solved by their purchases (crumb-free bread, smoke-free lungs, game show hosts).
That's my take. This song definetley makes you think!

Regina Spektor – A Cannon Lyrics 18 years ago
In response to just_old_light (love your screen name btw, that's from Samson right?)- when she says "tell all the people to be like the water" i always thought it meant something more along the lines of a sea of people, so she can swim in them. Like the water she swam in in the song.
I don't think the escaping in this song (which i can definietely imagine was inspired by a dream) has to do with literal escaping from her life. Whenever i hear it or read the lyrics i think of regina just wanting the freedom to be herself.
I also think this song could be something entirely different. About a relationship that set her free. The big boat was a person who took her away. The canon that was fired was the start of a relationship.
The waking up once and twice and millions of times part i think symbolizes falling out of love or ending relationships. She sounds afraid that she's going to wake up somewhere off of a big boat taking her away:
my heart breaks too easy, my words get all jumbled
and when I wear lipstick then no one
understands me at all
they think I’m saying hello and goodbye…
what I’m really saying is…

I’ve woken up once and I’ve woken up twice
and I’ve woken up millions and millions of times
