i think the line, "are you acquainted with the threat of being killed, or are you conversing with pigeons on the window sill" means are you thinking about whats serious and imminent to your fate on this planet, or are you just participating in the pointless self-serving pleasures. |

Selling out is sacrificing your artistic morals to make more money. RCA gave them complete control from lyrics to artwork, so none of their artistic morals were sacrificed. Hence, they DIDN'T sell out. As i have a good friend that is a record producer for Sony BMG and has previous ties to working with Vagrant, i know that moving from a mid-major or indie label to a major label doesn't necessarily mean more money. Because everything you do on any label is basically a loan from that label that is paid back through sales. (studio time, advertising, concert management etc.) Major labels usually spend more money on advertising and such and that means the band has to pay back more through sales. Since indie and mid-majors don't spend as much on things like that there is usually less for the band to pay back. So realistically a band could make the same amount of money selling 500,000 on a mid-major label than selling a million on a major label. The best thing about a major label is that they get your name out there. So when plenty of people know who you are, you can move back to a mid-major and make twice as much as you would on the major. |
