I always thought this song was about generations in a family and the different stages of life, especially in the context it was used when i first heard it in the film Crazy Stupid Love. but lately I think it is about one man's life and the stages in dealing with love and loss. losing his sister at an early age, followed by a failed marriage and finally upon finding his peace with the Lord meeting a woman who he truly loves and who sadly seems taken from him too soon due to cancer, but by now he is wise enough to deal with it properly and just wait for the day they are reunited again when his death comes because, "there's nothing you could do about it now." Blood always meant family to me in terms of blood relatives etc etc and its what runs through our veins that gives us life. I absolutely love this song and it is my most played song on my iPod of all time. |

Best song on the new album. At least my favorite. Just a sweet song saying even though he can be a pain in the ass he's aware of it and appreciates whomever is putting up with him

when i hear this song i dont know why but i picture two kids in college feeling totally alone except for one another. it's altogether sweet romantic and heartbreaking in a little over 3 minutes. beautiful piece of song. |

i always felt this song was a reference to kurt cobain...i guess the line we were but stones your light made us stars refered to the whole grunge thing and nirvana opening the door for many bands like pearl jam for success...just a thought |

i feel that this song's title at least is an allusion to the original adam and eve parable. the narrator of the song would commit such a sin such as purposely start the another world war by pressing the nuke button just so he can stay in this silo with this girl forever underground because he knows their love just wouldnt be the same in the "real" world. i love teh last line i think about taht great big button and i'm tempted. i heard josh ritter say in an interview he read taht a man and woman couldn't be put in one of these hatches together on purpose because i guess people all alone together taht long would eventually fall in love with each other or something due to the fact there was nothing else going on which only further supports the idea taht the outside world and all it's distractions would change the nature of the relationship. brilliant song |

after going to a format concert this song sort of reminds me of how the lead singer might feel at times dealing with his own audience who is much younger than him. i think he's singing about a one night stand or short lived relationship with some girl who he knew he really didn't have that much in common with but fooled around with anyway. in the end maybe he felt bad about it hence he was the only one who got burned. just a hunch. |
