I think it's about a girl. He's apologizing first for wasting her time and falling out of line trying to get into a relationship with her. He's being sarcastic and serious at the same time... he's sorry but he still wants to be with her. And now every moment, he just feels like he's wasting time not being with her. And she 'washes over him' like rain and sunshine. She washes the bad away from his life, makes him better. She's the sunshine. "all my life never found my place until I felt the sunlight on my face my sunshine" He never knew who he was until she came into his life; washed over him. |

"Grey would be the color if I had a heart" Why are people saying that's a cheesy line? The first time I heard this song was the live studio version (on youtube). Wasn't sure what to expect because I wasn't too familiar with NIN. But when he got to the second verse: "You always were the one to show me how Back then I couldn't do the things that I can do now This thing is slowly taking me apart" Then, "Grey would be the color..." and I was like... huh? then... "If I had a heart!" My heart dropped. In my opinion, the strongest line in this song. In this particular performance, he sang it with such emotion, it was just fucking unbelievably awesome, to me at least. And yeah, I think this song is just about an ex that he really loved, but she said there's no chance getting back with her ever. "I still recall the taste of your tears Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears My favorite dreams of you still wash ashore Scraping through my head till I don't want to sleep anymore" So many memories attached to anything he does. Dreams, 'taste of her tears'. "You make this all go away I'm down to just one thing and I'm starting to scare myself You make this all go away I just want something I can never have" Being with her just made all his troubles, all his pain go away. He just wants to be with her, but it will never happen. "You always were the one to show me how Back then I couldn't do the things that I can do now This thing is slowly taking me apart Grey would be the color if I had a heart" She was able to show him how better off he was with her. After all they've done, he became a better person, until they separated. Now, pain, depression, and agony is just killing him. "In this place it seems like such a shame Though it all looks different now, I know it's still the same Everywhere I look you're all I see Just a fading fucking reminder of who I used to be" It's a terrible feeling to be in a world without her. Even though he's going through hell, the world is the same as it's been. The only thing that's changed is his current situation. And then everywhere he looks, he sees her. Although they are separated, and the memories are fading, she's still always there. |

Here's what it means in my life. The chorus is just a feeling of hate towards an ex. "I bite my tongue everytime you come around Cause blood in my mouth beats blood on the ground" Those two lines pretty much mean that he just bites his tongue when he sees you or passes by you, and he'd rather just ignore the feelings he still has for this person than try to get back with them and lead to a bleeding heart. That's my take. "Hand over my heart I swear I've tried everything I could Within all my power two weeks and one hour I slaved and now I've got nothing to show" This relates to me so much, it's unbelievable. After I was dumped, I tried as much as I could to get back with her, at least stay friends. After two weeks, I woke up the next day, thought about it and said screw it. And it was all for nothing. Then, these two lines: "When you come around and you flex that fake grin That breathing less air beats breathing you in" I'll see my ex and she'll smile and say hi, but obviously is just faking it. And just smelling that persons scent, or a scent that reminds you of them, you'd rather just not breathe. Then the most important lines: "That seeing you is like pulling teeth And hearing your voice is like chewing tin foil Who brought the art of silent war" That's exactly how I felt. When I saw the person, my stomach and my heart just dropped, I really just want to avoid this person. And hearing her say anything is just painful. And now we rarely talk at all, silent war. It sucks though, because I want to get her out of my head, but I keep trying to see her as much as possible, or run into her, even though I feel this way. Anyway, best song ever by Incubus.
