oh and changes to the song: i have had all my fun. all i've got left is misery. i have had all the fun in this world. all i've got left is misery. there it is, like a mountain standing in front of me |

it's "you know i kissed the wrong woman.. i got the wrong head" i think the title is important.. people who sleepwalk can pretty much do anything and get away with it, because they're not in control of their bodies, their dreams are. there was actually a case of someone being acquitted for murder a couple years ago just because they were sleepwalking at the time. i think this is about a guy who cheats, but who tries to free himself from any responsibility for it by saying he was just sleepwalking. you could take that in a metaphorical sense too. |

| It's great that the song itself is so intoxicating. | |

My favourite line: Where is that body That zeroes in on god .. this song is all about abandoning yourself to sublime and intoxicating pleasure, like a dream, but then in the morning sadness, 'the blues', is back again. Like waking up on a day you know is going to be bad, or after a night of abandoning reality with sex and alcohol, you just want to roll over and go back to sleep to avoid the coming day, wishing you were back in the dream that's already vanished. |

Cocaine: no sleep, the sweating, lines going by so fast, always needing another, it's pretty clear. He meets a girl one night, and they want each other, she's much younger, beautiful.. they go home together. He has an addiction though, and even when they're together he needs his fix. She's naive, less experienced, and maybe this is her first time seeing someone taking a line or experiencing the physical reality of addiction. Alot of guys just CAN'T have sex on coke though. "Like a daisy in my lazy eye".. He admires her beauty but as though from afar, from a lazy/passive eye *impotence*. He sees the contrast between the two of them, how fresh she is, and he wants to be able to be on a level with her, and to be with her. He wants to 'rest his chemistry' to be with her, even if its just for a night. |

"If time is a vessel, then learning to love might be my way back to sea." This line used to confuse me so much. But think of it logically: Time is the vessel, and love 'the way back to sea' is the thing that drives the vessel. He's essentially saying that he'd like to spend all the time he has by falling in love. "Perhaps heartstrings resuscitate the fading sounds of your life" Falling in love revives a life that had lost its lustre. Sounds like he's saying, if you're dissatisfied with life, find love and things will change for the better. |

This song is clearly about sex. But since when has sex been 'flat', even if it is just a one-night stand? I think Brandon is showing how people can use a one-night stand as a form of escape. The guy in this song is tired of the world, saying "this party is old and uninviting ... if the world would fall apart..I wouldn't change a thing ... weary about eyes upon my scars .. expecting next to nothing." The music is lush and beautiful, but certainly not happy.. it doesn't make sense for it to be a love song. He uses sex as a way to transcend the mundane 'black and white' reality of the world, experiencing a stellar, sexual moment as a way to forget his mistakes (his scars) and the world itself. The fact that he calls her 'that kind of girl' implies that he doesn't fall in love with her after, that she's the kind of girl would have done this sort of thing before and will again.. it's like she's a drug.. he uses her to achieve the high that lifts him from the world and allows him to see it in a different light afterwards, but after their night together, she is used up. The emphasis at the end of the song on the thank you and the repeated 'that kind of girl' seem very much like a dismissal, as though it's definitely the end. It's such a gorgeous song though.. it's nice to hear a song that actually considers one-night-stands for what they say about the people involved rather than just the physical side of sex. |
